Jeff H's 2014 glog- Season ending harvest pics.

Okay, time to kick this growing year off. First a pic from last year of the hydroponic scorpion right before I added it to the compost pile. The plant was so productive with 4 gallon freezer bags stuffed plus more already dried that not only did I decide to not overwinter it, but TSBTs won't be on the grow list next year. This was truly a beast and by far my most productive plant. IIRC, it was over 5' tall and just about as wide when hte branches were heavy with pods.

It was started about this time last year, so it is about time to start some of those pesky slower growing plants if I want them this big next year.

All good things come to an end. The plants will be chopped up and mixed with the leaves for compost.

Okay, with that out of the way, let's get started on next year.

First, a shot of some of the over winter plants in the upstairs window sill. I just plan on keeping them alive here with no real growth expected until I put them outside next year. The two small plants are scorpion clones from the monster. I still don't think they will make the grow next year, but I just couldn't kill it without taking a couple clones. Other overwinters in this pic include a ghost pepper, hot paper lantern hab, tabasco pepper, my largest and most productive giant jalapeno and a couple of others.

Now down into the grow room for an overall shot of what I am doing this year. The flood table is new, but everything else is the same from last year. Same 600W MH light and same mylar on the walls.

Now at this point, let me take a minute to explain that there is no organic soil in anything I brought inside, nor anything that I plan to plant this year. Everything will be hydroponic in one way or another. Even the plants upstairs. My soil for all plants not in the flood table is 50/50 perlite and peat moss. I water them with hydro nutes every few days, but probably can get away with once a week or so. Soil drains really well but the peat moss holds a decent amount of moisture. I'm hoping that we have no issues with root rot this year. I'm also betting that fungus gnats won't like this fast drying soil either. Well that and the mosquito dunks that will be in the hydro water if those bastards do show up again this year.

A close up of the "soil". Look at all that great perlite.

20131021_203221.jpg

Now, looking at the plants in the flood table, the perlite/pete moss is about 80/20 and I flood hte table once a day. As it is, there is probably too much pete in the soil because the grow bags stay soaked all the time and I'm going to have mold issues. I need to rethink this, but this is what I have for now.

Here they are the day it was installed on Oct 21st.
20131021_203215.jpg

Here they are a week later (last night). You can't really see it, but there are a couple of tiny growth nodes on the ghost pepper (big pot on the left) and the paper lantern in the black pot. No sign of growth on the monzano yet, but if you look close at the pot, you can see what looks like mold starting. I tossed a cup of H2O2 into the rez last night to kill it if it was mold. We'll see. Maybe plastic air pruning pots would be better suited, or giant net cups.

That is all for now. Join me back on the next update. I'm working hot and heavy on some clones and other projects that aren't quite ready to be photographed yet. Soon though.

Thanks Jeff.

We have a winner. Purple jalapeno. Not really fair because I planted them several days before and had them on the top of the fridge keeping warm until I had room in the germination tank.

Pulled pork is done and was great. I started a Flog for some strange reason(bored I guess), and in an effort to not double post pics( keeping the boss man off my back), I'll post links here for food pics.

Two logs to follow! Be sure to mention your cooking projects because I often just check the glogs section! Mind in serious danger of being blown.

Got your package today Jeff! Filled the whole mail room with its wonderful aroma. USPS is gonna be wondering about me soon... Peppers are taking over the kitchen. Gonna get some of your nagas into soak ASAP. How is the carbon? I am out of space, but that hasn't stopped me yet lol.

That great smoked flavor gets on everything. Glad the seeds arrived safely and noone got hurt with the powder(yet).

Don't know about the IC,  Never grown it before. I started a thread a while ago about loving nagas but wanting something hotter than the ghost .The IC and NM were suggested so I decided to grow both. I ordered both from Judy and she sent a bunch of seeds. You prosper because I couldn't plant that many.

Links will be posted for the flog.

I may have injured a white habanero today moving solo cups around. That or the fan bent the stem a little bit. May stick the carbon in the dirt to replace it. Will have to see... I really should replace it with a milder variety, given that its a hab, but there are just so many superhots! Gonna have to get your naga started soon too!

This is the big annuum group. Hots and sweets.

The annuum group has been under the MH bulb for a couple of days. A couple of them were not all that happy about the intense light. Back under the CFL lights they go until they are a little bigger.

Red Rocoto that got beat down by mites. Tons of new growth. She will be a bushy one. Love it. Almost makes the mites worth it. Almost... :shh:

Overwintered Jamaican mushroom was stuck in the back corner. I think I forgot to water it. Oops.

This indian Carbon is one of my round 1 plants. Never seemed to want to grow and always looked sickly. I pulled it today and was astounded to see the lack of roots. Based on how pale the leaves are, I'm guessing that the perlite isn't draining fast enough and this plant is in a constant state of being over watered in the flood table.
20140220_190536.jpg

Trying something different. Mixed the perlite with hydroton. 50/50. this should aid with drainage. It will either help my little guy, or not. We'll be checking back on him.
20140220_190700.jpg

Jigsaw. This plant is really coming along. This is also a round 1 plant. Compare this progress to the Indian Carbon above. Same flood table, same containers, same perlite. Weird.
20140220_190727.jpg

I started labeling my trays so I could better keep track of watering. I'm seeing some of the smaller plants starting to show signs of being over watered. Watering the whole tray at the same time and recording it should help. I think.

Two monzano clones showing roots from the high tech cloner. The one on the right will go in soil in a week or so. The one on the left, not quite yet.
20140220_193920.jpg

I started 2 tomato plants with my round two plants and through one in the flood table just to see what would happen. I pulled my tomato plant out of the flood table last night. This thing is just getting too big. I don't really want it to die, but it can't stay in the flood table anymore. If I remember to water it every day or two, it should be fine, but it will be an absolute monster come spring.

That is it for now.

Jeff, the OW's are spitting out pods nicely...that tomato plant is too huge too early...wow, although it probably would be a good canidate to take cuttings off of. If you consider that I'd lay the plant somewhat horizontal to force the side shoots upwards towards the light. Once the branches have 3 leaf sets I'd cut just below the 3rd and trim the bottom leaves.

There's never enough space under the lamps for large plants...sometimes we just have to sacrifice, for the best.

Wow Jeff fantastic updates! Been a couple days since I could get caught up. Things getting crazy in the office.

Sprouts look good. Were you able to salvage that Jamaican mushroom? What are the signs of overwatering you are noticing?

I dropped your naga and carbon in the soak last night. Last round of seeds. Really this time. Maybe.

Yes, It is a good candidate for cloning. I've already pulled more than a few suckers off. I should leave them to get bigger and then take them for clones. Excellent idea.

Plants are looking good and I am jealous of the winter pods!!!  I have some pots in the same tray that seem to take different water amounts too.

Hope your seeds get there today.
I know, but at least If  watered most of the plants yesterday, I'll know that I don't have to check that tray for a day or two. Lifting every pot takes a while.

Seeds arrived yesterday. Thanks so much. They will hit the dirt later today.

Hey Adam, Life happens. You might have noticed my lack of participation the last few days too. Life gets busy.

The J mushroom is fine. Perked right up. Thanks for asking. The most visible sign of over watering is that the leaves start to get pale and the plant starts to wilt .

Hope the naga grows well for you.

Shot of the o/w plants in the living room. Looking good and as healthy as you can be with only a west facing window.

some action over in my flog. Here is the link. http://thehotpepper.com/topic/45376-jeffs-flog/

Two years ago I bought a cayenne blend of seeds hoping to get purple, never did.  Then last year the purple cayenne was their free pepper with an order.  Going forward, I am just focusing on one cayenne type.

Your living room plants look good.  I wish I could get away with that...I'd ditch the chair and the end table and put a big ole shelf up!!!

Planted 6 seeds of the purple cayenne. Two healthy plants was all I was going for, but I'm going to try for more.

Anyone who is interested in food pics, just a reminder that I am posting most of them in my newly created flog here.

A couple of spoiler pics so you know clicking the link is worth your effort.

And one new pic of my monzano clone. I transplanted the little guy in some soil yesterday. So far so good, but it will be a week or two before this one gets the bright lights of the grow room. He'll just stay in the north facing window for now.
