Meatfreak 2013

With some delay I sowed last sunday, 24 february. First I had doubts to start at all since it was already getting late in season but with all the varieties (thanks to all the great people I traded with!) I wanted to try I had to give it a try
biggrin.png
Keep in mind that the list was over 100 varieties, so I trimmed it down a lot. I intend to keep the 2 strongest plants of each variety except for the Piment d'Espelette. Some seeds are already old like the CGN (±8 years), so I got replacements in case the have popped up in 2 weeks.

I re-potted the Chimayo seedlings tonight, I will give away most of them.

Hi Stefan.
Your Guajillo chiles are doing much better than mine. Everything shown looks great. Have you ever sampled pods from the El Oro de Ecuador? I have seeds for it from Highalt, and I'm curious how it tastes. The Maldivan White (?) has a cool color in your last pic... it reminds me of ripening cherries.

Stefan,
Super updates, there is not much as great as home made jerk from scratch, great foodie pic of yard bird fractions, I love it \o/
I'm not sure if you have ever tried escovitch fish but that is one jerk lovers need to look at from JA, the results are awesome!

Great to read you are loving the weather, nothing like summer growth … we’re back into mucho rain again till tomorrow and from what my friends told me it was raining the whole time I was gone. Bet da plants are loving it and from the wonderful pictures I have no doubt.

Plant pics and pods look great man you are cruising at top speed! Your Waialua via PIC1 looks awesome, no matter how hard I tried I could not get one of the seeds Greg gave me to germ. I guess my egg method is too antiquated for some varieties :/ I look forward to seeing the pods she produces, great job!

Wow that Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Indian Red via Greg looks a lot like my Jamaican Habaneros both in the leaves and the pods, bet that one is going to be super tasty. Does it turn orange before red and how does it taste? Mon the rest look just awesome, you’ll be pulling some great harvests soon \o/

I hope you write a review on your El Oro de Ecuador (PI 585244) and Sweet Pickle, both really intrigue me and I’d love to read how they taste. All da other peppers captivate me as well!

Keep up da great grow brethren and have a wonderful day!

It sure does, as does the great weather ;)

Those scotch bonnets are massive, almost like bells. Nice stuff
I have to admit those scotch bonnets aren't that big at all, they just look big because of the angle I took the picture from ;) They are about 2" big, it's the first ones so the next ones will be bigger. The plant is gaining some more height first hopefully before it spits out more pods.

Hey Rick, thanks for dropping by. The Guajillo's podded up rather quickly after the plant out, they got only 8 pods per plant (got 4 plants) but have a good size. The plant is putting more energy in growing now, then making new buds. I don't mind, that means even more pods the next round and there's more then enough time :D I haven't sampled the El Oro de Ecuador yet, this is my first time growing it. From what I've heard/read it is a mild pepper with an excellent taste. Once I tasted it, I will post it in the glog for sure! Think the Maldivian White is some sort of cross with a Brazil variety like Fidalga Roxa, CGN21500, Cheiro Roxa, etc. unripe they have the same colors as those varieties. The podshape isn't any I've seen before, maybe someone on the forum has

Hey Ramon, I'm not a big fan of fish so I haven't tried the escovitch fish before  but maybe it's something I can make for the wife ;) So far the weathers stays like this, it's even gonna be hotter next week with temps around 86F during the day. And the forecasts for after that week are positive as well, maybe some rain for a change, the ground is very very dry here.

I think it's not your fault the Waialua didn't germinate for you, it took some time to hatch here also, with 1 plant out of 3 seeds. It doesn't matter now since the plants looks healthy and is flowering now :)

The Bonnet does turn orange indeed before it goes red. At first I thought I wouldn't turn red but then within a day it was red. I'm gonna harvest those next week for a taste test, really looking forward to finally trying a Scotch Bonnet! The Chinense need to catch up with the Annuums first, they are still rather small compared to those.

The person I got the Sweet Pickle from said they taste sweet with a spicy aftertaste, looks like it's gonna be really prolific. Also a variety for making powder of ;) Have a great weekend!

Evert thing looks top notch Stefan. My jalapenos are not . The extreme heat and humidity always sucks the life out of them . Hopefully  they can hold on a few more months. Until then  I will have to live vicariously through your grow.  Most awesomeness

Your plants are really podding up now.  Looks great.
Thanks, Linda. Besides the Chinense they really are loaded, especially the Jalapeno's are pumping out pods.

Sorry to hear about your Jals, Jamie! You know if I could, I would. Especially since I got a lot of Jal plants (64) and each have at least 8 till 10 pods hanging. Once I got some more time on my hands I will start and make my crosses I intended/wanted to do this season. This are pretty hectic at the moment with the garden and all, it consumes even more time then last year. Those maters want attention to ;)

I actually forgot to mention in my update that I had to remove/pull out my remaining 2 Madame Jeanette plants. After topping and stripping them because of the spots on the leaves, the plants recovered really good. Unfortunately I noticed the spots again last week for the third time now with this variety, so I decided to not risk any further spreading and remove them :( No Madame Jeanette's for me this season, maybe next year :)

Yesterday evening picture.

Very impressive grow you have there meatfreak. Lots of different varieties. Did you get the seeds for the various bonnet varieties, in particular the "P Dreadie" and the "Belize" on this side of the Atlantic (I am in Ireland)? It seems there isnt a great choice available from most seed companies.

Nice Stefan! Bummer with the Coyote Zan White. I have seeds for that one but looks like I shouldn't waste my time.

Depends on who your source is, John. I already had my doubts and this just confirmed it. I'm not giving up on this variety, I know Vladan has grown them last season. They looked awesome, so maybe I can trade some with him.

Cheers, ronniedeb. I didn't get those on this side of the Atlantic, like you say it's hard to find these varieties in regular shops. You got a couple that have a wide range of varieties. I traded these with someone from the forum who was kind enough to share his insane Scotch Bonnet collection with me! Lot's of good people on the forum here :)

Thanks for the reply Meatfreak. Yes, some great people here.

Beautiful plants and pods you have there, Stefan, and I'm loving the greenhouse, too. You know it makes me especially happy to see all those Mexican chiles...Your Chilhuacle Negro pods are beautiful! I had completely forgotten about sending you seeds for Yellow Bouquet....I got those seeds from wayright back in 2012....He would be glad to know that one of his favorites "baccs" (as he calls them) is flourishing in the Netherlands.

Quick update.

Hi Stefan,
You've got some nice looking pics there... Glad to see you have flowers on your Pubiscens chiles, and I notice your Chupetinha pods look like the same size and shape as my Cheiro Recife, but ripening yellow instead of red. Are they as prolific?
SANY0078_zps8307c389.jpg
Hey Rick, thanks for dropping by. The Chupetinha Yellow is as prolific as the Red variety. The podshape is a bit smaller and less round then your Cheiro Recife, judging by the look of your picture. The plants stay very low compared to the other ones and are very bushy.
