Meatfreak 2014 Glog

So I've started my grow a couple of weeks ago, 28th of January. I use the same setup as previous seasons, 2x 125watt CFL 6400K lights, black/white foil. First round were the Chinense, about 22 different varieties, mostly superhots and hots. Almost everything germinated within a week and with a total germ rate of 92% I was pretty pleased. I potted them up last week and they quickly showed new growth again. Well enough talk, this is what the plants looked like yesterday, 10 days after transplant and almost 4 weeks from start date.

This season I'm growing out a couple of crosses from friends like Gary/Nagabrain Chocolate F-2, Mike/Elysium Oxide Bonnet and Jamie/Green Hornet F-2. Also some phenotypes that showed up at John's garden, 7 Pot Peach F-2 and 7 Pot Caramel F-2. Of course I'm also growing my own discovery from last season, Pimenta Lisa F-2. Got 2 seedlings going, one has the desired traits so far and the other one is green as grass. Looking forward to growing both out!

Last weekend I started up the second round, mostly Annuum and some Chinense I got in trades these last few weeks. Today the the first ones sprouted after merely 3 days and even Chinense! Well that's it for now, thanks for keeping up so far :D

Great pics Stefan . Looks like the garden is full tilt now brotha .

That mystery looks very naga brainish . You sure some of my seeds I sent ya didn't make it in the dirt  ;)
It does a bit which is understandable considering the variety it should have been but no it's not coming from the seeds I've sent you :) Those will follow in the next update, I planted out those plants later so they are still growing first before setting pods. I did see a small Green Hornet and Morado forming ;)

OW Jalapeño Farmers Market Potato doing a whole lot better then previous season. Decided to give it a bigger pot although it was flowering, don't hope I shocked it to much.
IMAG4471.jpg

IMAG4472.jpg

Elysium Oxide Bonnet F-4 (Mike) Noticed tonight it just got a couple of pods now. Other 2 plants are a bit smaller.
IMAG4449.jpg

My other Jalapeño Jaloro, which is about 3 ft.
IMAG4447.jpg

Pimientos de Padron with a skirt on the ground, Rick ;)
IMAG4446.jpg

Chayote White... it looks a lot like the Coyote Zan White should have been last season.
IMAG4438.jpg

Volunteer pepper, think it's a Puya which would be great!

Couple of non's.

Sprite, someone will be very happy with these soon ;)

Nice plants and poddage!

I really like the look of the Pimenta Lisa, I'm looking forward to growing it next season.

Weekend is close!
Thanks, Scott. Currently having a 2 weeks (short) holiday, well not really since I got loads of choirs to do in the house

Some more non because I can :P

Striped Roman
IMAG4470.jpg

Coral Queen, big one started to turn today!

Santa Clara Canner, yeah you guessed it, sauce and salsa.

Stellar pod porn Stefan, and the "maters don't look so bad either... ;)  How do you think your little "princess" is going to handle sharing cherry tomatoes with baby brother?
:shh: she doesn't know she has to share them ;) there will be more then enough for both of them. Had to top of the Datterini's already, those are monsters. The rest is pretty close so I'm gonna let the suckers at the bottom of the plants stay from now on. Maybe I can get some more yield since it's still rather early in season. The cukes are coming in also now, about 20 this week and this will only be more. Once I have enough I'm gonna make a relish.

Great looking progress Stefan!  Really like the look of that Purple P. Lisa.  That Georgia Black seems to have it's own rain forest canopy!  Look forward to your pod harvest's soon.
As soon as the bonnets are a bit bigger I will take some pictures, they are already pale green :) Yeah, the Georgia Black plants are insane. I started removing some of the bigger leaves since it hasn't set a lot of pods yet. If you look closely at the picture of the purple Lisa you can see the older pods are changing color. Suspect they will go through the same phases as last season, so now it will become green with purple stripes/spots.

Nice. Where do you get Datterini seeds?
Got them from a good friend who is a huge tomato grower. He highly recommended this one to me.

Hey Simon, nice seeing you again! I did not :( but after seeing that picture I most certainly will give that one a try next season! Looks awesome, is it the next-gen of the seeds you've sent me back then? Did you happen to grow out the Choc Hand Grenade? Thanks for visting and you got some beautiful pictures!

That's 10, bump please :(

Yes they were the next generation, that picture is from this year using the same seeds that I sent you. The chocolate hand granade didn't do well last year only a few small pods I still have a couple of those seeds will give them another try :)

Wow!

You have quite a tomato selection there for sure. And I see you thin them heavily. Is there an advantage to that? I've always just let them do their thing, and of course they take over the area they're in.

Keep it green!

Okay cool, maybe you can sent some seeds of this gen :) better for the stabilizing process. Sorry to hear about the CHG, it's a great variety. Gonna grow them again next season, F-4 seeds.

Lot less then previous season, Scott. This year I focused more on the varieties that I really can use and not just the ordinary colors and shapes. So got about 30 plants for sauce and salsa, especially the salsa was a big hit and we're currently finishing the last jar :)

Yeah I do, the main reason is for disease control. There's a lot of people that grow potato's over here on the complex and our climate isn't as dry as yours. So this week we had some more rain and lower temps which means Phytophthora (will) hit hard. Unfortunately most of the growers do not take the effort to removing the sick plants (which pisses me off big time!!) so the disease get spread around easily.

Growing in the tunnel is already a barrier and keeping the air circulation is key. This season I have 2 plants in 1 "hole" so they are very close. I was also told by a friend of mine who is an huge tomato grower as well, that keeping around 6-7 leaves on the plants will improve the yield of the plants. This way it can use it's energy and nutrients for other causes then keeping the leaves alive. Did the same last season and I was pretty pleased with the yield. I must admit that I give the Cherry varieties more freedom to run free ;)

Have a great weekend!!

Very interesting, but I don't think I could get away with trimming the leaves in my climate. Even with the sunshade, also the leaves help hide the fruit from the birds, which just love to peck just one hole in each piece of fruit.

Last year I trimmed the lower leaves for disease control, this year going that low has been an issue. Besides it rained nicely this year and they well everything just went nuts.

I did have a few die off this season, I try to rotate and want to add more framing for the sunshade so I can flip back and forth between sections.

You too enjoy the weekend!

Be happy you don't need to trim them, it's a lot of extra work. If it were only for the better yield I wouldn't do it either but I don't want my plants to get sick before I even harvest 1 tomato ;)

The Georgia Black plant is a beauty. I'm guessing that is an annuum? It has leaves that resemble some indian superhot chinense.

I have been meaning to ask you about the Coyote Zan White. Does this look true? I will have more detailed photos soon.
The GA Black should be an Chinense but it's a different story with that one. It's also a bit grey in color and hairy. The growth is really impressive and to fast for it to be an Chinense only.
Mine didn't turn out like those on the picture last season but I know how it should look like and that looks true to me. I got an variety growing that I suspect is an mislabeled Coyote Zan White. It looks exactly like yours! Low growing plants. I stripped of the lower leaves and branches a couple of weeks ago to try and get some more height. It has worked, it's getting taller and loaded with buds/flowers. Thanks for dropping by John, hope you are doing okay! Have a good weekend.
Oh almost forgot to post some pictures I've made this afternoon.

Elysium Oxide Bonnet F-4 (capsidadburn) from my biggest plant. It's loaded with flowers and pods starts coming in. It was hard to see if they are pale green at this moment. The other 2 plants are smaller although they are catching up quickly, in the meantime I keep pinching the buds out.
IMAG4526.jpg

First Morado pod from my buddy Jamie!
IMAG4528.jpg

Pimenta Lisa F-2, dark pheno flower. There is some variation in were the purpe appears on the petals of the flowers. Sometimes it's stripes and sometimes nothing.
IMAG4524.jpg

Devil's Tongue Chocolate #1 This plant keeps spitting out interesting shaped pods. The new one on the right looks like it got some Scorpion genes?
IMAG4527.jpg

Not the best picture but couldn't get the focus right, Murupi Amarela. Think it's almost ripe since it's changed from green/yellow to a very light cream color.
IMAG4531.jpg

And I saved the best for last, Scotch Bonnet Yellow x 7-Pot BS Yellow F-2 from the outstanding and famous PIC1 (Greg) :) Plant #1 spits out pods that look like this, will definitely need to isolate some flowers to keep this strain pure. Bonnet shape with the texture of the Brain Strain, awesome!!

Beautiful Stefan!
The GA black was listed as a chinense on Peter's site. I was sure it wasn't until it spit out multiple pods per node.
So it has some chinense genes in there. Isn't that silvery grey hairiness cool though!

Yeah, Jason it also has Chinense genes in there. It sure is a beautiful variety to grow, with all the leaves the pods are now like snakes in the bushes  They stick their heads out. I guess it has the best of both parents :) Talking about parents, I should get to work on some also next week. It's time for some superhot action.

Excellent pictures Stefan! I love your tomato selection. My first pull from the granaderos I grew this year hasn't impressed me, but I think I need to let them get riper. Moreover I selected them for disease resistance... it's humid down here and I've had lots of sick tomatoes in the past. You got a favorite sauce/salsa mater? I especially like the somewhat pointed varieties like the Katey and Bychok.

Peppers look amazing too of course.
