Mill's 2013

Well I managed to totally ignore my grow this past year. Had some great harvest of some great types but didn't have a lot of time to get pictures up and stuff like that. 2013 will probably be more of the same with a daughter due at the end of Feb but I will try and keep it updated.

Pics to close out '12 and ring in '13...

Sprouting some Reapers I won in a giveaway.

How tiny it actually is, 2oz solo cup, Reaper behind.

Those two are in a cabinet I built a few years back with 4-23watt cfls and reflective insulation lining the sides. It also houses an overwintering C. Rhomboideum which has seen better days.

Here are the lights.

That is one of two cabinets I have going, the other has in it a Wild Texas Tepin and one 65watt cfl in a reflector. This one is going to become a bonchi for my wife's desk at work.

Other than that its finally slowing down around here before classes start back up in early Jan so I have time to prep the rest of the overwinters.

Yeah dude I'm loving the wood chips! That makes me smile so much...You have no idea, Noah!

I don't worry about the clay balling up. As long as the clods aren't any larger than 2 or 3 inches in diameter, it doesn't seem to matter. Also, as long as the clay isn't a continuous matrix, i.e. the clods aren't touching one another and the matrix is the wood chips, the desired good things will happen...As far as all the work you're putting in now, it will be repaid in many, many orders of magnitude for years to come...

Congrats on your little one! I know you never get tired of that face!

I thought you might like it Gary. Just hopefully I do not have to supplement too much high nitro ferts this year and they take care of themselves.

And no, I never do.

How long was the wood in the brush pile, and what was the average diameter of the branches? If there wasn't much decay, then you may find yourself adding ferts.....The first year I lost some plants to nitrogen tie-up.

I think about 4 years :P

Back in summer of 2009 we had the area cleared so we could extend our back yard but things ended up not working out so smoothly and we let it get overgrown again. This is what it looked like back then.

And yeah, there is another pile down at the bottom that I need to get at also.

Cool...Nice place, by the way, and it looks like some real good ground, too.

If you decide not to add ferts, you may want to keep a close watch for signs of nitrogen tie-up. I seem to remember that the plants did well for the first few weeks, then they just stopped growing...

Fortunately the ground was basically forest so yeah the soil was pretty good in there. Out in the yard it is terrible. There is no soil at all, its just red clay. Hopefully the decay happened long ago and there is no nitrogen tie up but there might be from the mulch on top so we will see. Going to be an interesting year thats for sure.

We love living where we do!

I would be in heaven with a place like that... Love the forest and everything it has to offer us... Would definitely be lost for hours just walking around the property..

Dude, you need a few goats, they'll clean that mess up in a few weeks.

Ha ha, been trying to tell the misses that for a couple years. Need some goats, chickens, pigs and rabbits. Most of it is wild black/raspberries and a pain to cut through with a machete. Get stung and cut a lot from the thorns. The rest is crappy brush that pulls out of the ground because the soil is great, loose and moist.

Good seeing you Patrick, don't be a stranger buddy!

Its only about 1/8th acre back there but it is pretty cool. The foliage is way to dense to wander around but still cool none the less. At the way back are pines and you can actually move around through there pretty well.

Wow. I can't imagine how much work went in to that. Great job.

Tell that to my back. :) Whenever the weather is nice and the kid is asleep I go out back and pull brush and chop brambles. Rake all the ground cover up and spread some mulch down to hopefully keep the regrowth at bay. It is close to a full time job that is for sure.

Barely. The slugs got most of the plants leafless but they are making a comeback. I will get some here in the next couple weeks for sure.

Don't they like beer?

I've heard you can use it as a bait for them. When I lived in Va. they were all over the place.

I'm glad I live in town where slugs will dry up instantly I don't think I have seen even a snail since I moved here 9 years ago

It's been a while I know but I have been terribly busy.  My new starts are all shitty looking so not many of those but here is a little update.

Fatalii overwinter

Choc Hab overwinter

Reaper

New bed, ground gets torn up every night by something of significant size.  Tearing up narrow holes all over the new beds and turning the mulch over.  Tons of worms in there so I know they are going for food but no idea what they are.

A whole clump of mulch held together with mycelium.  These beds are covered in it, AWESOME!

Choch Bhut overwinter, she is a beaut and absolutely loaded with flower.
