Mixology and Cocktails!

I am a tequila snob, don't tell anyone.  I once had thirty $50 plus bottles at one time.  El Tesoro Paradiso is my all-time favorite.
I used to live in this place well not really but they had about 150 different bottles they poured shots from...some $25 or greater a shot.

Infected whitehead...

One part vodka
One part Bloody Mary mix
A spoonful of cottage cheese

You're welcome...

Seriously, gross, conceptually. Is it good, though?
You are one olive shy of a blackhead, I guess.

Oh man, good call!

And I have no clue if it is good or not since I don't drink alcohol. I just love the idea of it. Next time I bartend at work I should find someone who is willing to try it.

WHAT!??

$25.00 a shot of tequila

If you know about the aging process you'll appreciate why older spirits cost so much more.  I was at the Buffalo Trace distillery in April and learned that a bourbon aged for about 16 years has more than 70% of it evaporate during the aging process.  So clearly the prices on the older stuff is going to be much more than the clear unaged liquors.  They also have a much more complex flavor, not something I personally would "shoot", but rather sip and enjoy as it is.

I'm sure it costs a lot of money to have folks to take and check samples, and then there's paying rent and climate control costs to cellar it all ...

I have to laugh, though, for a minute ... thinking about those Jim Beam "Devil's Cut" commercials ...

I can't find it now, but I read an article on Grey Goose and Patron marketing that was pretty eye opening.  I never particularly liked the taste of Patron, I'd take Cuervo silver over Patron really... Well I found out that Patron is all just a ploy.  The owner is the same guy that owns Paul Mitchell hair products.  He made the tequila look classy, paid people in high places to drink it, and made all the sheep think it was a high class tequila.  So I guess I just feel like if an alcohol brand has to spend that much on ads and marketing, its probably not worth the price they're asking because they're paying for that on top of their mark up for profit.  Look at Huy Fong, no advertisements, cheap product, decent product, its the people who consume it spreading the word, not the company.

I'm a fan of that logic - like Benton's ...

I'll never eat grocery-aisle bacon again so long as they exist, and I'd never have known about them if not for word of mouth (BigB) ...

It's like organic search traffic versus ad-driven traffic ...

So there's a martini bar around here that makes a tequila martini.  Tonight I tried to replicate it. Their menu said it was silver tequila, triple sec, sour, served dirty.  So that is was I tried to do, but used lemon and lime juice with some sugar instead of a prebottled sour mix.  Also I added some smoked chili powder because why not.

This is what I made for my better half tonight, bourbon, disarrono, and lemon juice. I dug it.

Then I decided to finish of the night with one last cocktail.  It's called the Black Widow according to Liquor.com. http://liquor.com/recipes/black-widow/#reuRBciIzk0RR1dJ.97 there's the link, I used honey instead of agave, and added a little seltzer water for good measure.

On another note, here's the cherries soaking in Luxardo maraschino liqueur.

That's what she said?!??!

Actually ... I first thought of TB's tekilla when you wrote that ... he drinks something out of a head, if I recall ...

I'm due for another bottle of silver/blanco soon, perhaps I'll look into that one SF.

If it ever decides to warm up around here the tequila will start steadily flowing in mi casa.

This where most people go about tequila all wrong.  If your shooting it, your doing it wrong.  If its Silver you mix it.  If its Anejo you sip it (NOT in a shot glass) like you would a Scotch or good Bourbon.  If all you want is to get drunk, stick to Fireball  :drunk:

We have a restaurant close to us that has about 70+ bottles of tequila and mezcal, and you can put together three 1oz glass taster flights.  Its been a great way to try lots of different brands without spending too much and getting too trashed.

One of my favorites for the price is El Zacatecano Anejo

Yeah, too many people just take shots of shitty tequila to get their party on and end up ruining themselves with it, as I may have done when I was 21.  Then they associate the tequila smell/taste with whatever they got into after drinking too much of it (in my case I woke up the next morning in a fancy hotel with m&m's in my pants... don't ask, I don't even know).  Its a bummer 'cause tequila is a really great spirit if you learn to work with it.  I've slowly been opening up my friends' minds about tequila, especially now that I have taken up this hobby.
