mmcdermott1 Grow List Log 2011

Well here is my grow list and status. I had a smaller home built greenhouse but I am quickly running out of room so I built a 8' long x 2' deep x 4' high one last night. Used reflective 4x8 sheet in back and bottom/sides/top are some r13 insulation that is suppose to have 98% reflectivity. We shall see. As of now, I have 445 seeds planted and/or purchased and 147 germinated seeds. Other than the 2010 Jalapeno, all seeds with a "0" germination have not been planted yet and/or were just planted in the past few day. My favorite new supplier is Trade Winds Fruit. Their seeds are germinating at an unbelievable rate. My current list is....

Hey McDermott I notice you're in Lima. We're you there for the great tornado? I visited there Easter of '96 and that's all they talked about there. That and I remember a really good Hungarian? restaurant along the highway b/n it and Columbus.

Nice looking plants BTW. :)

I think I was around but was just a baby..might have even been before me. Born in '71 ..can't remember when it was.
Thanks on the plants.

Hey Mike, Great job....they are some healthy looking Hot Pepper plants.
You sure know your stuff about gardening and Chiles.
I'm thrilled that my seeds had a 50% germination, compared with your overall germination rate of 33% or so.
When I saw those 18 Goose Eggs.....I held my breath that none were my Pepper Joe Seeds, and fortunately none were.
0% germination puzzles me on ANY variety....what do you think went wrong with so many seed varieties that just did not germinate?
Let me know if I can borrow some of your pics for my future Newsletter, "Chile News & Views".
Fiery Regards,
Pepper Joe

Hey PJ,
Thanks for the great compliments. My final germination rate ended up at around 68%. However, I'm still getting new things going yet so may go higher (or lower).
Not really sure why my germination rate on a few specifics were really low. My 7-pods were low but also my first time trying to grow them. I wouldn't assume they need treated any differently than say a bhut but not sure. Those seeds came from a very good source so not sure what the deal is. I even got a second batch (free of charge) and didn't get many the 2nd round either. The brain strains I got were very good. 6 out of 7 came up and are doing well. The white habanero I would blame on a bad source. I have since ordered more (from someone else) so we shall see.
I was just part of a seed parcel from members in THP and these things are germinating like crazy. Have only had a week and I would say I am close to 35-40% already.

As far as pictures, you are more than welcome to use anything you want. I am hoping to post pics all the way up to harvest time so should be plenty to choose from.

Thanks again for the great compliments, happy growing!

they say to play baseball you gotta break some windows,

with the growing exotic stuff you gots to make some
mistakes to learn which things will hurt and help
and at (what moment)when to call it good and move along

if you done over fertilized make with the water water water
hopefully they will recover easily

how long until you are getting out to the solar areas?

might be a good time to increase rooting area(volume?)

Haa beagle :)

Transplanted the bigger ones twice already. Just soaked em down the a water spray. Don't think I killed anything other than a few leaves but for sure learned a "don't" with ferts!

Enjoyed reading through and watching your peppers progress. Everything looks so healthy! Just curious though, is this all for personal use, or is this a business venture? I'm having a hard time seeing the two of you eating enough peppers for that sized crop!

Bonnie

Thanks Bonnie. Well we for sure use a lot of peppers. We do a lot of canning and makes a LOT of salsa. We also feed a small army (8 kids)..although only a few will touch the mild hot peppers :)
As far as the latter part of your question....we shall see ;)

I started canning 3 years ago, and that's what really got me into peppers. I discovered that the ones that were mild enough for fresh eating, didn't give the salsa enough of a kick, so each year the peppers I'm growing get just a little hotter. Of course, nothing I'm growing would be considered hot by most of the people on this forum, LOL!

Bonnie,

Last year we canned some Hot-Cin Salsa. It was a salsa with cinnamon and orange habs. When it was freshly made it was AWESOME :woohoo: . We canned, and a few months later we opened it and it was still quite good. Fast forward about 7 months from the canning process and all we could taste was heat heat and more heat. The cinnamon taste was gone. So this year I will make some adjustments and hopefully find a balance of cinnamon and heat that lasts. That's whats fun with salsa experimenting with all levels of heat and ingredients!

Hope your growing season is a good one!

Well now it is my turn to write! While Mike has been working on the peppers, I have been spending my time on the tomatoes. Today the count is up to 90 plants (the majority being Roma and the other cherry), 10 have yet to break thru the soil, Italian seeds are in the process of germinating, and a few seeds are still in the mail.

I now have to stop with the tomatoes so that Mike doesn't run out of room for all his other peppers he has germinating. I just wouldn't feel right about taking up the needed room for my lil ole tomatoes.

I am hoping the weather warms up so I can take the plants out to the greenhouse then I won't feel guilty about planting more seeds!

good read, great looking plants.I use a lot of fermented sea weed on my tomato's they have a taste all there own. try it. great job on the grow.
