mmcdermott1 Grow List Log 2011

Well here is my grow list and status. I had a smaller home built greenhouse but I am quickly running out of room so I built a 8' long x 2' deep x 4' high one last night. Used reflective 4x8 sheet in back and bottom/sides/top are some r13 insulation that is suppose to have 98% reflectivity. We shall see. As of now, I have 445 seeds planted and/or purchased and 147 germinated seeds. Other than the 2010 Jalapeno, all seeds with a "0" germination have not been planted yet and/or were just planted in the past few day. My favorite new supplier is Trade Winds Fruit. Their seeds are germinating at an unbelievable rate. My current list is....

I have probably $300-$400 in them total (not each). I have an outdoor one that is 14 feet by 12 feet and about 6 1/2 feet at the peek that I built for around $200. If it ever warms up to where its not in the 20's at night I will be moving stuff in there :)

wOO HOO...just got some Douglah seeds about a week or so ago and got my first germination today. Very excited.
Noticed today some stinky asian beetles eating a few of my plant leaves. Not many of them so just squashing em for now..hopefully it doesn't become a problem.

You're still starting seeds? Man oh man you and the Mrs are going to be some busy campers this fall. Got a name for your roadside stand figured out for you..... Peppers by the Ton. It will work!

Yea still starting a few I got late. Probably won't amount to much unless I put them on a triple nutrient diet..lol.. getting kinda late for seeds..but what the hell..why not :)

You kicked the kids out of their bedrooms and installed grow lights to make room for all that yet :D Holy Moly, you need spring weather

I plated some cilantro last year and had planned on it again this year but it came back in the garden. Well saying came back is wrong, it stayed alive all winter, putting out new growth too. Good luck with it.

Received the last of the tomato seeds in the mail today, Federle, Sweet Pea Currant, and Riesentraube. They are now germinating in their little cuppy homes :) I also planted 36 germinated Italia's and 9 more Roma's (that's the final plantings of Roma). Time for a wine break ;)
Are you growing any beefsteak type tomatoes, or just small fruiting types? Do you use them in your salsa, or are they just for salads, fresh eating, etc.?

The only thing that comes close to my new pepper obsession, is my obsession for tomatoes! I have space for 15 or 16 plants, but I've sown 19 different kinds, LOL.

I usually grow a few of the bigger tomatoes (only a couple of us in the household eat them fresh). We do grow a lot of cherry types for the kids (7 of em - kids not types :) ). The kids enjoy just going out to the garden and eating them. It is nothing for us to go thru a ton of those little guys in one eating. A majority of the tomatoes are of course for canning. I am also trying some longer thicker type Italians this year.

No wonder you have such a big garden, feeding 7 kids, Wholly Crap. I can't imagine. Mrs. Logchief is 11 out of 12.

We've got several cilantro volunteers that are really coming along, it just goes to seed so easily

You are lucky that your kids will eat fresh tomatoes!!! Mine love to pick the strawberries, and ground cherries as soon as they are ripe, and they'll even eat snap peas right off the vine, but none of mine like raw tomatoes.

I love to slice the beefsteaks and eat on an English muffin with fresh basil and a slice of mozzarella, or even a little bacon if there's any available, but I use most of the beefsteaks when canning tomato sauce, which I mix with some paste tomatoes to thicken. I just think most paste tomatoes don't have enough flavor, and the smaller tomatoes, like cherries, are mostly juice and skin. The beefsteaks work well in salsa too.

Just my two cents worth :)

Do the kids eat Chile? My 4 year old hates chile but my 2 year old eats it hotter than my wife.. Which is not that hot but still amazing. (Jalapeno salsa with 1 habanero is about her limit) When something is to hot for her to eat I always slide it over to my younger son and he eats a few bites. I was hoping it would motivate my wife to try and improve her tolerance but it has only motivated my 2 year old to keep pushing his limit. LOL

actually our 12 year old and our 8 year old boys had jalapeno's last few years..raw from garden. Then we upped it a bit and gave them a garden salsa....that was a bit much for them yet :)
a few of them have braved the sauces we have purchased :)
As far as chili, yes they eat, but not super hot stuff. Wife does make some damn good chili :)

Updated pics from today. Had to transplant about 25..you will see why when you see the wicked root ball :)
Went crazy on pics again..sorry
