pass the parcel seed trading

I have to agree with Sorellina, there has to be a cut off at some point and also there has to be a certain amount of time you have to be a member or a certain amount of posts that you have to have to get in this type of thing because it is not fair to the first few that get in and never see it again. Sorry to be the stick in the mud on this thing but people can get in this thing the day they find this site and I just think it is not right.

Ciao Dale-

Excellent point about the new member issue. I totally forgot to mention that. You're absolutely right, and the reason for that is that it keeps people who "troll" forums for seeds or other things don't take advantage of people's kindness and generosity. Perhaps the moderators can come up with a number of posts they deem to be long enough that people here are well-acquainted and not liable to take advantage. If you think about it, a lot of things in life require some sort of "trial period", where trust is built up before handing over the keys to the kingdom. I think people would be fine with the idea. What does everyone else think about this?

I like the "trial period" idea....out of the clear blue sky, I choose one hundred (100)....if you post a little more than three a day for a month that will get you there....

I also think the cut-off idea has to be used because like I said earlier some people at the beginning really did not have a chance at any real varieties of seeds and may never get the chance if we allow people to just keep getting in. After it has made it's rounds then if everyone wants more people in so be it. JMO.

OK...since we are talking about "rules of engagement" for the parcel, how about time of year to do it and the order of the list of members there are.

I trust the members of this site and because of that I belive most people will put in new varieties not already in the package...probably put more seeds in than they took out...if not new varieties, then good seeds of varieties already there...one thing else I would like to see on the seed packets is when the seeds were harvested/bought...

You may say the order I am suggesting is because I live in the south...not at all for the suggestion...I suggest the order should be from south to north first because of the different plant out dates...I would like to have all the seeds I am planting in hand and ready to go by January 15th...plant Feb 1 and plant backups march 1...so cutoff date would be January 1 for the US...

Or...do we keep it as a "first come, first serve" basis? Either way is fine for me really...but I do like the January 1 cutoff date...
I am ready for the flak the order clause suggestion will bring...unless everyone understands my reasoning behind it...

Ciao AJ-

The Round Robins I've participated in were always first come first served, but I think your idea has merit as well. As a member of Seed Savers Exchange, I can tell you that here in Canada, we're one of the last to receive the Yearbook, usually arriving some time in March. If we're to have any chance at all of getting our seeds before we need to start them, orders must be filled out and mailed straight away. For those growing peppers, however, even in glacial zone 5, it's already too late. When do most of you have your seed saving in Fall wrapped up? That would be the time to start the mailing process, I would think. You can decide if you want it to go in geographical or order in which people sign up, but regardless, a cut-off date for signing up would probably be a good idea.

Since this is my first year growing from seed, I decided back in October to get things in order...I had 90% of the varieties I am growing by middle of December....

If we do a south to north rotation, it would mean we could start earlier. Since we have earlier plant out dates, we can have seeds ready to go earlier in the season. I would suggest we start in August.

I would also suggest that we consider a maximum number of participants. Even if a participant sorts and mails within a couple of days, I think you have to figure on a week/person. If 15 to 20 people opt in, we're looking at it taking to December for the package to make its first round.

If there is enough interest, we could have more than one package making the rounds at a time.

August would be fine with me since I will have seeds available by then...(hopefully)...

Well that would leave a nice parcel on the end for me! This go round I was near the begining of the order..... but seeing how slow this thing goes we need to be very diligent about mailing the parcell back out in 1-2 days. I imagine the list will be quite extensive next time.

I wouldnt have seeds till end of Aug - Sept. If the weather stays nice.

I guess we Ought to "RE-UP" for the second go around.

One problem we run into may be seed viability. I am looking on to next year at this point.

From that standpoint, I don't care if noobs are let in line. If they need them now, fine. I don't need it at this point, but nor do I want to give up my place for the next one.

I am up for the 2nd go and I should be right after Mcmanmatty. No line jumping!;)

I am about ready to give up hope on the first round...no word from anyone where the package is...does anyone have dethwinds contact information?...wonder if he is OK?....

A.J., I'm further south than you are and wouldn't mind starting it. I should have plenty of seeds by then as well.

no problem with that Rob...

who is going to be the "moderator" for this one? Someone up north that will be later in the list?

as far as the order goes, I haven't a clue...doesn't really matter to me I suppose...I am hoping to keep my strains pure by farming out to friends that do not have gardens...I just hate to let my teenagers leave home...

If I am able to do that with my super hots...I will have plenty of seeds for 2009....
