Patricks 2012 Pepper Grow Log

Here we go again! Time is just jetting by and it's hard to believe it's time to get started again. It is though and ain't that wonderful!

I may be moving this summer so going small this year. Here's what I got started tonight:

7 Pot Brain Strain x 4
7 Pot Congo x 2
7 Pot x 3
Armageddon x 2
Bengal Naga x 3
Bhut Jolokia, Caramel color x 6
Not the Black Naga x 2
SB7J x 4
Trinidad Scorpion Butch T x 10
Trinidad Scorpion Morouga Blend x 6

The seeds are in coco coir in 3 oz dixie cups. They will be covered and on a heat mat with the temp set at 84F.

One of my SB7Js survived :) . It's in the ground growing. Planted a bit late but I should see pods this season. We can compare notes to see if they are uniform.

Patrick,

I'm not sure if you fixed me up with a SBJ7 or a Scotch Bonnet but from your pics--mine has the shape of yours. I have 4 pods on mine, 2 larger ones and 2 getting bigger. All are still green.

Your's are looking good. Funny about your son...lol (I've never had one yet--so I better keep my yap shut..lol). Carry on the great work, my friend

Nice Patrick. The SB7J looks good again. That Bengal Naga sounds pretty cool. You aren't kidding about plants being stressed this year and heat levels. An African C. annuum blew my head off last night. It was seriously hot!

Good to hear Dulac and Mike. Mike post a pic when you can and we'll figure it out.

That's crazy Chris! I tell you if a guy wanted to post some crazy scoville numbers this would be the year.

Thank you Vladan, hope you're having a great year.

This might sound kind of strange but I'm realizing I been missing this place and you people. Good to be here again.

Thanks guys! Been on a little vacation but I'm back now and ready to go! I hope everyone is having success with their grows this year.

Appreciate the well wishes Mike, thanks. How are yours doing?

Jamie you're right on the Bengal Naga being hot! I swear if it isn't the hottest thing I've ever tried it's darn close. I think the heat wave we're having is having a huge influence on the amount of heat in the pods. I can water every plant late in the evening and by 7 p.m. the next day they're showing signs of wilting--big time stressing! My son tried to eat half of one and after chewing for about a minute he didn't have the boys to swallow it and ended up spitting it out in the sink. Spent the next 20 minutes shoving ice cream in his mouth. He taped it with his phone but is having a hard time up loading it. If I can get it I'll post it. He said it's pretty embarrassing. I know better than to video tape myself.

Shane when I get another ripe Bengal Naga I'll make sure you get a chance to see it. Got one getting close I think, pic below.

Yao, I'm not getting a lot of flowers or buds on either of the two Bengal Nagas right now, I think the night time temps are too hot. I did sample, a very small sample mind you, a Bengal Naga and it freaking murdered me. My tolerance is down to jalapeno's being hot.

Stefan, looks like that SB7J wants to produce for you. Hope it does bro.

Spice, yep the SB7J came from seed from the previous years hybrid. The pod in the pic below is pretty darn close to what they looked like last year too. If the plant would get around to setting some more pods I would have more pics. Plenty of time left in this summer.

MJ thanks for offering to post some pics of your SB7J. I haven't heard if any of the seeds I sent out are growing true pods or not yet and am getting very curious.

SS you just tell me what you want man and they're on the way.

Matt please post pics of your striped pods--the more pod porn around here the better! I don't think they're very common at all.

Alright now on to a couple of pics.

First up is the SB7J pod I picked last night. It's pretty darn close to last years size and shape. The bumps aren't quite as sharp though. I so dig these babies.

This is one of the three Caramel BJ's I have growing and based on the color of the green pods we didn't think it was going to ripen to the caramel color. Happy to say wrong on that one! In fact onl one of the three had the correct green color but all three are producing caramel colored pods.

DSC022102300x1725.jpg

Glad you are getting a few pods on the Bengle at least as I had loads of pods on my plant last year but this year my seed grown plants have done nothing but we have had a really bad year this year in the uk.

Hey Spiderman-
Doing the catch up thing myself.......
1. I have few starting to do the spider mite thing....waiting on Shane to spill his guts on the Bonide particulars!
2. Pretty funny story about your sons clash with the Bhut-gotta give him trooper status for even trying.I think most of us tend to forget what most people have to contend with when they try a superhot.
3. I got some SBJ7 seeds finally, but restraint has kept me from trying a too late start...barely!
4. I 'm not sure about the infinities....as mine were dark green starters, I do know they broil you for a long time.
5. Those caramel Bhuts are looking great, same story as the SBJ7's though...been hard to stick to my guns ,and wait though.
6. Your stems are awesome -all of em look nice and fat  that means strong plants!Or I should more accurately state"I think...."
How's that peashooter you got a while back, have you been playing with fire?
Have a good one-
Dave

There are the particulars...great stuff. I alternate between this and Neem when I have "issues" fortunately I have enough good bugs out there I am down to just spot treating a few plants. I released 3000 lady bugs and I don't want to kill them off.
Thanks for the ripening shot of the Bengal Naga...looking forward to the full color version!

great looking chiles Patrick! having a tough year in illinois - unbelievable heat and no rain. good luck with the rest of the season.

Hey Patrick,
thought you might like to see this. This is the 2nd SB7J plant; it was much smaller than the other one and just set its first pod this week. Even though its only a few days old, it definitely seems to be following the same shape as the F1!

Hey Patrick. Both my SB7J plants are flowering at the moment, so far the pods are too small except for one.

IMAG1521.jpg

If you look closely, you can see 2 pestle's on it ;) It's not gonna look anything like yours but will be interesting too see how it turns out. It wasn't 2 flowers grown together, more like 1,5 flower  It looked really stupid :P

Awesome guys, thanks!

mjD that pod is looking like it should, that's got me stoked. One of these days I'll need to sit down and do some reading on hybrid peppers and stability. I think it's kind of rare to have an f2 look like an f1 but not sure.

meat it looks like the half on the left of your pod wanted to follow the right shape but the conjoined twin thing kind of threw it off. Looking stupid is a hilarious way to describe it!

You got that right buddy. Thing is if you can keep them watered enough to produce pods they're going to be wicked hot. I've got a few guys on a Harley forum interested in getting into peppers and they volunteered to video themselves eating a whole pod. I sent two TS Butch T's, one a 7 Pot Primo and one other a caramel BJ. One of them has some experience with superhots, the other three don't have a clue. Poor bastages. I'll provide a link when they're up.

gnslngr, I admire your patience man, don't know if I could have done it. I haven't done much cap popping lately but have a date with it in a couple of days.

Here's a shot of some caramel BJ's, all from one plant.

Shapes are all over the place on this plant but pretty bhut like on the other two. This one is much more prolific at this time. I would estimate 80% of them have some kind of rot/mold going on inside them. It could be BER but I'm not sure. No other plants are showing signs of it and the two ferts I'm using both have calcium in them. I know there's another thread around here somewhere that a few folks are addressing this issue but I haven't read it recently to see if there is any new news. It's very frustrating for sure.

Bengal Naga almost ripe. My son told me last night his are ripening and they're "fire" red.

The marker was removed from this one but I'm 99% sure it's a MadballZ. If it is it's either crossed with something last season or it's possibly reverting back to the original parents, a chocolate BJ/7Pot cross. Or not.

More later, thanks for the comments everyone.

Hey Patrick,
That Carmel BJ or as I see it the "Cinnamon Girl" has a beautiful color to it. How does it compare to the other colorsin taste and heat ?

Spots or mold blemishes on the bottom of the pods are most likely BER. The weathers been crazy hot here in Chicago and I bet you've had the same. Potted plants are effected more often to BER than raised beds or inground. The over/under watering tends to bring this about when the fruit is near ripening. I've seen pods that had water in them and I've also seen inner growth inside the pod due to over watering.
Some folks here have described mold in many a pod...............that sux.
I'm still waiting for some more flowers on the SB7J. So far only one pod and its starting to get fat and round with a spikey top.
Good luck with the last half of the season...

Greg

It looks like one of the plants I have going is showing some significant pod variation too. Not as much as yours but still present. I'm still waiting for pods on one and it may be another week or two before I see any of them ripening. Have at least one plant that looks like it will produce pods just like last years so happy about that. No mold or rot in them though so happy about that too :-) Thanks for the pics and updates, appreciate it.

Hey Greg, I haven't had one this year yet but someone posted a review elsewhere. Based on what I tasted last year I think this is pretty much spot on:

" I ate the placental 1/3 by itself & the bottom 2/3 chopped up in a bowl of salsa w/ some Baked Tostitos Scoops. Extremely hot, but with quite a bit less of the tongue-stabbing quality of the red jolokia. However, it displayed a little bit of the stomach & throat burning that is a hallmark of the douglah. Overall, I'd say it is not as hot as either, but combines qualities of each. Flavor was somewhat bitterly acrid with the floral qualities typical of a jolokia and a little bit of "chemical" weirdness. (I actually kinda liked it in the salsa.)"

Congrats Patrick on the caramels! They may not have the desired shape at first, but I know some of my bhuts that have started kind of "off" have settled into s consistent pod shape over the season.

Sorry to hear about the mold, I have a few plants hit with BER. it definitely sucks.

Good to see you back in action Patrick. I know it's hard to get off that new Bike of yours . Plants are looking sweet:)

Patrick, did I tell you my SB7J pods from your seed look absolutely identical to your Mother plant? I started the plant late so it's delayed, but I thought you'd enjoy this news. Who says F2 pods can't be stable? lol.

Chris

Greg, ditto on the taste and flavor TPGM posting in his post. I haven't noticed the chemical taste though.

MGOLD, thanks for the info. I'm finding less and less mold in the pods, just a few underdeveloped, black seeds towards the bottom of the pods. The flesh of the pepper is kind of soft at the end though. I'm being a sissy and cutting it off.

Thanks Jamie and man do you have that right. :P

Hi sanarda and welcome to the greatest site on the WWW for anything to do with peppers. The SB7J is a cross I had last year. Pretty sure it's a cross between a Scotch Bonnet and a 7 Pot Johan. It was a great looking pod, good flavor and decent heat and I decided to try and keep it going. I sent out a bunch of seeds to folks and it looks like it's growing pretty true. Be happy to send you some seeds if I have any this year. My one surviving plant isn't producing very well right now.

That's great Chris! Like I mentioned above I'm struggling with pod production. I think I've got some kind of tomato leaf curl virus on my plants and they're not looking real good. I'll post up some pics later.

Thanks everyone for the comments.
