PaulG 2014

Grow List 2014 - Many new varieties and a few repeaters.
This is the third year of my original three year plan to grow a slew of different
types to see what grows well here before settling on some consistent performers.
I'd love to grow some of the new varieties from this season again, and some more
of my favorites from 2012, but not enough space.  But I have seed for my favorites for
season 2015, so I have something to look forward to already!

Major goal for season 2014 - lay in a good supply of super hot powder!

Just a quick update on the wild Texas Tepins.  This one has the most ripe pods; all will have to go to the greenhouse when and if I need space for starts in party cups:

Hiya Paul and happy 2014. Love the idea of aerogarden to start and R-Max is good stuff! Thinking about using ER blankets behind my grow shelving to reflect heat off wood stove. But love that R-Max!

Thanks, Annie, same to you and yours.

The R-Max is good stuff if you don't need a lot - I think mine
was less than 15 dollars for a 4x8 sheet, which was more than
enough for my grow shelf.

Another +1 for the R-Max here.  The local Lowe's here has the 1/2" 4'x8' for $11 (R-value=3.2).  Two or three years ago, a student of mine built a dual-zone solid-state refrigerator using thermoelectric cooling modules and insulated with R-Max.  We found that the polyisocyanurate in the R-Max has one of, if not the, highest R-values per unit of thickness of any readily available material.

I bought it at Home Depot.  It's just foam core board with a foil
covering on one side.; there are several kinds available.  This
particular one is called R-Max.  They cut a 4x8 sheet into
smaller sized pieces for me, but it is really easy to cut with a box
knife if you have a space to lay it down.  It comes in a variety of
thicknesses; mine is just 1/2".  Stc3248 used something similar
in his grow box, and so did HanbaneroHead.

I used something similar called Poly-Shield for my grow box last year. It's also faced with reflective mylar on one side. I'm using it again for this year... just re-enforced the corners with Gorilla Tape. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Polyshield-3-4-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Foam-Insulation-389697/202090376#

I found I have to prop the bottom of the front doors open
a little to keep the heat down a bit with my T5HO lights.

Hey Paul how many bulbs does your T5HO use? Do you think a one bulb model would work for starting seeds and raising the seedlings for a couple months? I am considering switching from my CFLs.

Update on Round One seeds:
Finally got a T Scorp to germ on the 30th of Dec, so that one is 1/6.
The Infinity and Butch T still haven't popped, so I chucked 'em.
They were from pods I harvested in 2012, and they may have been
taken too early.  I needed the space in my germinating trays for the
Round Two seeds, which went into the Jiffy plugs today after soaking
overnight in distilled water.

Not much to see, yet, but most of the earlier round one seedlings have a
set of true leaves and are starting on the second set.  The more recently
germinated ones are putting on the first set of true leaves.  These went
into the germinating trays on Dec. 16:

Al right Paul!

A sowing we go!

My room where the grow station is stays about 75-80° depending on outside temps, just from the lights and sun from the window.

Heat is set at 68-69° in the house (we cheap:), the door stays closed, box fan blowing. The room has full south sun.

JA Hab seeds are drying!

My grow shelf is eight feet long; I have 2 fixtures, each with 2x4' tubes.
I think it is the minimal light for my set up.  Two 4x4' fixtures would rock
the house!  I find that the 2-tube fixtures are a little narrow for putting two
rows of 18 oz. cups under them without having the seedlings leaning
toward the center of the fixtures, but for the moment, I'm pretty satisfied
with the output.  I think a one bulb model would work for getting things
going as long as you have a single row of containers or a box with
highly reflective walls.  Stc3248 made an awesome light bar with CFLs
that worked great in 2012.

I have leaky areas on all sides on my shelfing/box set up and it still stays around 80°F in mine. The T5 works perfect in it! I even use the binder clips to hold the front panels for easy removal.
Oh yeah!  Binder clips, duct tape and steel wire; the holy trinity
of construction materials   I'm getting about 82-85 ˚F in
the top of the soil in the cups, with my set-up.  The T5HO fixtures
are awesome.

Sounds like a perfect spot, Scott!

Mike
I hope so, Mike!  It's a long season, and lots can happen,
but let's hope for the best!

Good luck with your grow, brother!

Thanks for the lead. I will look up stc's 2012 glog.

Yeah I like the CFL trees. I'll probably go that route, and seal the whole chamber in with reflective foam core. Maximize those lumens.

Excellent news Paul... It's a good feeling when the children that've been dragging their feet finally catch up! Good luck with round 2 sowing.

if you want to fill the extra spaces in the Aerogarden... why not add a couple more of the Marconis and Sweet Paprikas? You'll use the Marconis in the kitchen and can use the extra Paprika pods to mellow and sweeten some of your powder blends. Just a suggestion...

More jalapenos obviously. One lesson I learned last year is that I needed to grow many more low to medium heat peppers. I use way more jalapenos than I do scorpions, but I grew twice as many scorpions last year.

Thanks for the tip Paul. This is more or less what I had in mind, just noticed they had single-bulb 2' T5 setups online for ~20 bucks. I don't think a single bulb would be enough, so the CFL's are probably better for my money. Also I know they work... My OW's have been loving them. That was with Sylvania brand daylight bulbs... I am going to switch to Home Depot's ecosmart I think.
