Pete's Pepper Progress - 2009 Season

Here are the varieties and part of the germination set-up. Solo moutwash cups as the intial pots:lol:.

Here is the incubator. A rather primitive set-up and one that I will improve upon over the course of time. 110w CFL, 2 bulbs that emit 10K lumens. The light came a week after most of the seeds germinated so I did not avoid the legginess of a lot of the seedlings.

Fatalii Progress

Two of these plants I will grow out for the Fatalii Contest. My goal is to get these plants four feet tall. I don't know if this goal is too much of a stretch or not but I'm gonna give it a go.

The fatalii's are a little smaller than I would have liked at this point but they seem pretty healthy to me. I started my foxfarm fertilizer regimen yesterday so I expect growth to pick-up significantly in the coming weeks.

Yo Pete your plants look happy and well on their way. I really like the solo mouthwash cups, good size. You could put a phone book or old magazines under your plants to bring them closer to the light. Nice start.

Your plants look great, and yay for another improviser!

While 4 feet tall is a nice goal, remember that not all pepper plants grow up. Some stay short and bushy, and some only go medium height. As I said to Mike last night, I plan where I plant each pepper plant by what I know of its growth habit.

Thanks, man. Not a bad start. I took your advice and put some more magazines under the peppers to bring them closer to the lights.

Yea, 4 feet is an aspirational goal so won't be too disappointed if I can't achieve it. Something to shoot for though and I've seen Fatalii plants on this board that were well in excess of 4 feet.

Here are a few more that I took pics of today:

Limon (Does this look Chinense to You? Looks more like Baactum to me. Seed pack said Chinense so we'll see):

How do these Limon grow? From the looks of the seedlings they seem like they may be sprawling:rolleyes:

Until next time....

Fatalii might, I thought you were talking about all your plants.

There is, I think, an Aji Limon that is a baccatuum. I usually grow the chinense Limon, it's one of my favorites. Not as blistering as some of the other hab-types, but thats ok by me! My plants are generally on the small to medium side, I don't think they've ever topped 3 feet. They're very productive, though, and ripen early.

Transplanted most of my peppers that were in the solo mouthwash cups into 3" pots. This is where they will stay until they go outside the beginning of May.

My Serranos and Jalapeno M's broke the surface this past week will round out my pepper varieties for 2009. I will not be starting any more seeds although I am tempted. I made an impulse buy of Chocolate Fatalii and Aji Umba from Beth at Peppermania. What a super individual Beth is...she included some Trinidad Scorpion "Morugas" with my order. I am really tempted to start these but simply do not have enough room with everything else that I am growing.:(

I did have a set-back this week. Minor nute burn on some cotyledons and the tips of some true leaves. Thankfully it was very minor and the result of my own stupidity in mixing the nutes. 1 teaspoon per gal does not equal one teaspoon in a small watering can, d'oh. My enthusiasm with getting the new fert applied and general laziness f'd it up. Lesson learned.

Here are some pics of my pepper progress:

They look awesome. Are you currently using and nutrients?

Superthrive and FoxFarm Grow Big. Just transplanted into larger containers w/ FoxFarm Ocean Forest potting mix so no Grow Big for two weeks. I believe that the soil itself has enough nutrients to last at least that long. Don't want to over do it and risk burning them.

Nice and bright green. Keep up the good work.

Thanks alot, man. This forum opened up my eyes to a whole new world of Chili peppers and ideas for growing. I never realized the number of varities and diversity of Chili peppers until I came here.

Damn, I want to plant these!
Especially the first pack.

MorugaSeedsetal.jpg

I just have too many varieties going for the space that I have.

Anyone grow the Morouga?

Things are moving along nicely. Just transplanted my Jalapeno M's and Serrano's into larger pots. I will be planting no more pepper seeds in 2009 although I wish that I had the room to do so.

Thought that I would share some pics of my Fatalii's. Healthy, but moving slower than the other Chinense varieties that I am growing. Not going to compete with PRF's or AJ Jack's plants for first ripe Fatalii, but I still have hopes for most harvested from one plant, lol.

nice PP...the plants look very healthy...

as far as the competition goes...I like the way Potawie said it...more like a comparison than a competition...
