Pete's Pepper Progress - 2009 Season

My Aji Amarillo is absolutely exploding with growth. I think that I may have started this variety too early as I have two months to go before plant-out and it is already half a foot tall.

I think that I read somewhere that the Aji Amarillo is known as the pepper tree :uggh:. Is this true? How big can they get?
Hey Pete, I wonder if that is the same thing I have? My seeds are from Peru and they call this Aji Escabeche and Aji Amarillo there. As you can see mine are really big plants too and I know I started them too early. I had no idea they would grow as fast as they are and so tall. I think these are gonna make trees LOL

Wow, Brian...those plants are like two feet tall!!! The one in the foreground looks very similar to my Amarillo. Not sure if we are both growing the exact same variety but I'd bet that they are closely related! I'm gonna go check on chileman's database...

Interesting! They probably did originate in Bolivia. They sure grow alot of them in Peru as well. I never have seen mature plants when down there though. They use this pepper in various ceviche recipes in Peru. Its not really hot but has a little spice to it

I believe that baccatums are in general known for growing "tree-like".

No, they're not. Most of my baccatuums bush more then they grow straight up. A few to 3 feet, and I can think of about 3 that made it to 4 feet, but they were still well bushed.

Question, what are you guys using for fertilizer? Does it have any auxin in it? Those plants all look a bit spindly to be that tall.

I'm just using Osomocote and whatever fertilizer is in the soil. I think they will bush out when I set them outside. They have been growing by my kitchen windows with no grow lights. In fact all of my plants have been grown this way

Which Osmocote? Most of their fertilizers are high nitrogen. With what is also in the soil, I think your plants are getting too much nitrogen. Until they can get more light, I would really back off the fertilizer.

Here Comes the Sun...

After one week in the sun (about 5 hours direct and 7 indirect) my Naga's have become so green that it is truly remarkable. While my CFLs have done a good job, there is nothing like the sun.

C'mon Spring!!!

How often are you fertilizing and with what? They look great.

Fox Farm Grow Big at 1/2tsp per gallon every other watering.

I'm a little over a month from plant out and I am chompin' at the bit to get these babies outside full-time. I simply am running out of room.

I have had some trials over the past month...My Serranos came down with some friggin' bacterial spot that morphed unto other plants. I lost about 8 out of the 25 plants I had culled down to due to this issue. In fact, one of my two red rocoto's simply died overnight. The f'n leaves just curled up and went limp and black...very bad and frustrating. However, I still have 17 or 18 plants with which I can work with this season. I've got my fingers crossed that they do not befall the same fate as the other 8. I think that I nipped it in the bud though as I immediately got rid of any plant that showed signs of infection and moved the rest onto a totally different area of the house. Pepper diseases can be insidious and I do not want to lose my whole f'n crop.

Anyway here we go with so pics...

Jamaican Hot Chocolate...I cannot wait to start chompin' on these come August!

As I cannot grow quantity, I focus heavily on the quality and put a lot of time into the 17 or so plants that I have remaining. A great hobby though...

Virtually all my plants are now being grown in Sunlight (5 hours direct).

Mmmmmm.... hot chocolate... :drooling:
Do they make a 'marshmallow' pepper to go with that?

Seriously though, those are some beautiful specimens you got there.

Gonna give it a couple weeks before updating progess after these pics...
