PIC 1's...Pepper Graphic...2014

Time to get this Grow off the ground...

Well sort of...at least the indoor part of it.  Here's the current look at some of my outdoor containers. We've had higher than normal snow amounts since December. A couple of hard frosts to boot. That may kill alot of the spring White Fly that have been dominant the last 2 seasons.

A Couple Shots from the Most Recent Seasons

I've started out my seeds for many years in Dec/Jan, and no doubt will provide nice plants with rewarding harvests.
But when you have to start indoors under lights it comes with a cost of time, material and utilities. With some thought I've finally come to (my senses)  a conclusion. As of Febuary 1st I have roughly 14 weeks to plant out. I'm confident that I can raise healthy plants indoors in that span. So this year will be the test...who knows maybe next season will be a March startup.......a march to the finish !

This was my largest harvest last season, late August, 40+ lbs......a few hrs and many beers worth of picking.
The harvests after this were a few bushels here and there down to the 5 bucket pulls once a week come late September.

Enough of the Old and in With the New...

Lights...Action......Camera !

Speaking of lights...my current and permanent grow area has been moved down to the sub basement. I gave up a spare bedroom which has been converted into a guest room........
I currently have alittle over half the room and lighting setups that I had last year.  I'm planning to use every bit of it.
When running over 4k of power you need to have enough "juice"  to supply the lights safely. Inaddition to the circuits I had in the past for the basement grow I've added 2 additional 20a dedicated runs. Also for those who don't, having a smoke detector within perimeter and a fire extinguisher nearby would be a good idea, especially when running HPS units.

I'm still in the process of mounting some lights, and unless they're being hard wired its a good idea to keep the power cables off the floor

Here's a photo of the plant framing before the shelving is put into place. The deminsions are 54" wide and 12' long.
There's 3 tiers....top has 7 six bulb high bay T8 fixtures, middle tier (shown) has 10 four bulb close spaced T8's with a 6 bulb T8 at each end. The bottom has currently 4 six bulb T8's with a few more being added. The sides have 70% Aluminet shade cloth with can be rolled up unto a pvc pipe and secured to the ceiling. The cloth can let air circulation through by the means of a fan(s). The ends of the framing have foiled faced styro insulated panels.

Here we have cups ready to go, each cup may have anywhere between 2 and 20 seeds depending on the variety.
I'm starting out alittle different with the seed soak this season. In the past I've used Potassium Nitrate (Salt Petre) for part of the soak. I'm out of it and its too late to order....what I'm doing instead is a 2 hr soak with 10% Hydrogen Peroxide/ water mix.......drain out then a 24hr soak with a brew of Chamomile Tea (4 tea bags to a gallon of distilled) plus one drop of Superthrive to the gallon. I haven't used the tea before but have heard excellent results in regards to damping off prevention or seed fungal issues.

The mediums for the indoor grow.....Hoffmans for the seed starter. For the potting up I'm using a mix of Happy Frog, Ocean Forest and Pro-Mix. These will get equally mixed into thirds. My usual Fafards MetroMix is not in stock. These will give great results as I've used them in the past.

a few more shots later after dinner...........did some body say Octopus in Red Sauce.....yum

What's Happening.............

A little "Through the Bedroom Window" view............all is well !

Bam !........   small little harvest, all kinds of goodies. My friends at the fish mkt were happy to see these....arrive....lol

Those who brew tea know how important it is to clean the bucket out after usuage. I've got the process down to about 10 minutes.
No bacteria...................................stems.. ........or.. seeds,.... in my tea........................

The 1st step in the next brew involves aerating the chlorinated water. We have a great filtration plant here, but, the good microbes wonit fare well against the chlorine, flouride  that's added to our tap water. I'll let the air pump do it's thing for 14 hrs, then the compost and other ingredients will be added to the 5 gal paint strainer bag to start the brewing process......usually 24 to 36 hrs with the lid on. UV light will inhibit the benificial microbes.

one of the Moruga plants is finally starting to ripen up

7 Pots..........not the most gnarliest ones I have, but the heats still there

more to come !....thanks

Thanks Stefan and Tripp

A ripe BOC .( Bhut Orange Carrot..Copenhagen )..seeds from Annie

Sunrise Scorpions............this plant might get moved into an area that gets afternoon shade. It's difficult to fight sunscald pods when the canopy is underneath and the pods rise above...there's nothing like afternoon shade.........and perky leaves on a plant !

Jamaican Habaneros....one of 3 phenos, these are the long version, there's also a lighter varigated, and a large blocky type (my favrite) that's really spitting out the pods. All three phenos were from Ramon ( WalkGood )..........and I'm still planting from the original seeds that he sent me. It's time to isolate a branch or two fro future......pure seeds !

Yellow NagaBrain

"The Hot Corner..........or.........Home Plate"............depeding how you look at it

Jigsaw................haven't tried one yet..............but I can imagine

Brain Strains................yum !

Here's an EOB (Elysium Oxide Bonnet) seeds from Mike (capsidadburn). This pepper started out light green then turned orange and is now starting to get some burgandy coloring in the creveses. One of my other EOB's is pushing out more bonnet like pods from they're ripening up red. The 3rd plant has unripe lighter green pods that haven't riened yet.................can't wait !

only a few more photos.....shortly

Thanks Rick..........

Mourga Red

Chocolate Bhut

These are the huge 7 Pots...........almost the size of a tennis ball............almost

oops...thought I had more pepper shots......forgot to upload them........How bout a foodie ?

Ingredients : Cilantro, Conch Meat, Chives, Bahamian Goats, Celery, Garlic, Baking Flour, Half and Half, Lemon, AP Flour, Corn Flour, Mango, Eggs, West Indies Hot Sauce.

I finely diced the Conch Steaks and added that with 1 egg and 1/4 c of Half and Half which was purred in a blender. Garlic, Celery, Chives, Bahamian Goats Lemon zest  (not pictured grated Onion) were also diced up and folded into the Conch meat puree.
1.5 c of AP Flour, 1/2 c Corn Flour, 1 tbl of Baking Powder and a tsp of Salt were sifted together and folded in the wet mix.

Deep fry at 360 util golden..........the addition of baking soda would help these spread (powder does the rising, soda does the spreading)
But in this case I was swinging for the golf ball shape.........ha

Plating shot with a Mango Aioli.............2 Egg Yolks, juice from a lemon, diced Mango, pinch of Salt, splash of Caribbean Yellow Hot Sauce....and a slow pour of Canola Oil, enough to form a loose emulsification....

Thanks for checking this out...........I'll respond to other glogs later in the day

Greg

Ok this is getting stupid .... ridiculous pod/plant shots and then tops it off with some top looking fritters ... Great work Greg!!  Those Jigsaw's look like nasty pieces of work and the Orange blob's must have some Bonnet genetics??  Always love stopping by to see a master at work.

How do you think the AACT is working out for you this year?  Have you noticed any difference?

Greg, awesome pepper garden and even better pictures of the poddage.  Everything looks uber healthy and great to hear the Brain Strain is a favorite.  Great backyard somewhere under all those plants.

Cool Cappy......good to hear from ya....the last thing I remember seeing from your garden  was a season ending  photo a few yrs back, of a tall plant, possibly a Brain St overwinter that you trimmed nicely.......down to about a 6 ft plant....lol

Hey Greg, just wanted to show you my UBSC Brown...I am sure you will approve...

Nice Matt..........thanks for sharing the cool photo. I have a few plants growing, but no ripe pods yet.

I was pleasantly surprised to find brown pods on one of my UBSC too!  I will add a pic here soon.

Chocolate UBSC.  My other plant is making red pods just not as nice as these pods.  Can't wait to try it!

Great Mike............I'm glad the brown reproduced for you.....hope it wasn't sweet like Milk Chocolate.......

You're certainly getting more color in your garden than I am Greg, things are really starting to move!

Some of the color is happening overnight............Three weeks from now should start some heavy harvests

Nice pod porn, and great foodie pics brother! My wife has a cousin who married a middle school teacher in Key West. He found he could make more money selling Conch fritters to the touristas then he could as a teacher so that's what he does now. Cheers!

Wow...........the Conch meat is probably right out of the shell.....you can't get it any fresher. The fritters are nice snacks. I'm planning to make some for a chilihead bbq get together in a week. The only difference, I'll make a 2nd batch with fresh super hots and addition powder mixed into the flour.......a warning label on those......... :D

Thanks Tripp.....a few of my Jigsaw plants are producing more of a Bhut like shape. This plant is different...and a keeper. Seeds were from the same pack from Fatalii seeds.

The " Blob " shape of the pods are a bit different than any of the typical 4 lobed bonnets....these pods are bumpy with no smoothness what so ever...and they do squat in shape even more along the season.

Now if you were to ask me what pod resembles the traditional Jamaican Bonnet shape....I'd have to say the Bahamian Goat...
thanks for your comments and questions..

I have around 15 MoA plants, but also other Jamaican Bonnets growing from seeds from a Jamaican mkt. Which are also producing some "A" shaped pods......
Rick besides the Jerk marinades, sauces and powders, what I like to do is enjoy a fresh pod, with a bag of plain potato chips along with one of the fabulous deli sandwcihes available here
