PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

I've neglected this too long!! Looking jaw dropping as always greg!! In my experiences my mutant pods never grow very big at all ...simply stall and stay pathetically small.. I hope this one continues to grow like the three headed freak it is!!

I can't believe the health that your plants exude... really they are picture perfect. Oh and Great photography as always ... nice work!!

very healthy plants. Do you use metal halide exclusively as opposed to flourescent? n00b question: what do they provide that flouros don't? Also how do you water? bottom/tray watering or misting the tops?

I like the yellow scotch bonnet for cooking/eating as well. Nice pod shape, just enough heat to give that sting that I crave as well ;) Wishing I had kept my yellow scoth bonnet from last season now but I have a few overwinters as it is in my small abode.

Greggggggggggg! Where you at man? I need my fix brotha!
Dang is Jamison...I thought you posting here meant I was going to come in to see a whole bunch of awesomness!!! He'll get around to it...soon I hope...oh did I say soon, I meant SOON GREG, SOON I SAID!!!

Sorry bout that Shane! But that was hilarious my friend!

Ouch...Crash...Bang !

Sorry folks for the lack of updates lately....I've been involved in more than one afterwork side job, some that half to be wrapped up prior to the end of the month.
My time spent in the "Grow Rooms" lately have been more of a "High and Bye"....with little time to do more than an occasional watering.....

Here's a few shots from the last week or two !...Thanks for being patient.

Someone was asking about the "3 headed JA Hab".............well here you go not on a silver platter but a callused hand........ :tear: ...lol
She fell down and made boom ! ...Sometimes ya just can't touch the young pods.

In honor of the 3 headed loss I decided to make a Triple-Triple for Sunday's breakfest. 3 scrambled eggs with pickled jalapenos, heavy cream and chives...3 Irish bangers, 3 buttermilk pancakes and 3 strips of Hickory smoked bacon.......and to top it off a jar of "Pure Maple Syrup with a Buzz".
Thanks to Andy for sending this jar of marvel from Michigan...........

Ok, the last few weeks have been everything but predictable with the weather so I had to put together a couple of hoop cold frames. They are 5ft x 10 ft. Enough to have 70- 2 gal containers inside

Wouldn't you know it just when I put the plants in.......a couple days later we had 27 deg temperatures overnight with a dusting of snow. I'm glad I have frost blankets with a 5 deg rating loss. The plants survived this one !

Believe it or not, this is the same day around noon. The temps hit 65 deg and I through a 45% shade fabric over the plants. This was the 1st true day of sunlight. Its been overcast and rainy.

The days nice so I thought I'd pot up some 5" pots to 2 gal. Once the plant and the medium are in I scatter a 1/4 cup of slow release fertilizer around the perimeter to the container. No more bottom watering just the overhead rain and some hosing...By the way this plant is the "West Indian Hab"

Here's one that just got potted up to a 2 gal. It's a Butch T "Mississippi Strain" seeds courtesy from Brandon (Big Cedar)....tanks B.C.

Once again this is the same day, the plants held up nicely even through the hard frost. The temp evaporated the containers so I'm giving them a drink. It's better to do this before the freezing evening temps. Nobody likes their roots frozen...
I can see it now, my wifes right, I need to lose 20 lbs.........Dangit...........less Rum, mon

Here's the other "Hoopala" with another 70ish pots. I've a whole bunch more that need to get potted up and moved out but the weathers not right , yet

a few more photo's shortly...

Great updates Greg, nice to see some plants outdoors that's awesome! You're MoA's look great and you beat me to da flower, hehe. Mine's still a flower bud, hopefully open later this week. Can't wait to see all your plants outside, should be awesome! BTW you can always send me the rum you won't be drinking, got a tree full of coconuts just itching for some rum, lol. Have a great week mon!

Edit: Now I'm off to eat, great looking breakfast there, now I'll have to make eggs, hehe ...
Edit2: Greg that aged burger you made is beyond awesome, beautiful layout, presentation and plating hat’s off mon \o_

Like the "DOF" on the "JA H" pod. That is cool coloring on the West Indian Hab,was that under the halides? Did you give it the "Stretch Armstrong" on that Butch T picture? That is a hard shot when a plant is that big! I think you are looking fit as a fiddle. Stop taking photos of yourself and you will lose that 20# instantly.

Thanks Ramon,
I hope the MoA flower leads to the "traditional" shape pod, but if not its only the 1st and we both know the flavor will be the same either way.

I'm still figuring 3 weeks away until the plantout. I can't wait, once the roots have a chance to roam with less restriction the plants will zoom.

Thanks for the food comments...

Hey J,

Yes, the color on the West Indian (Yellow) Hab was due to the move under the MH lights. That seemed to happen overnight.

lol, the stretch or the left handed gutter shot at the bowling alley photo...

The container was a bit heavy (must have been the worm castings) and I had to shoot a few photos to get the darn thing centered.

Only photos, no videos...lol

Sorry for the late response,...and thanks for the questions and comments...

My main source of lighting are the T8's. I have a few 400 MH hoods that I use when the plants reach over a ft tall. The stronger light helps pentrate the lower canopy....that is if you don't crowd the plants together...which at some point is unavoidable.

I bottom water only, that's where the roots are. I like to keep the top of the soil bone dry to avoid any fungal larvae issues. As the plants get bigger and transplanted into 1 and 2 gal containers the process gets a little time consumming, but well worth the effort.

Some of my plants are getting moved outdoors to harden off in phases. The overhead watering from the rain and the use of the hose makes things easier nowadays...I prefer to give the pots a drench when outdoors letting the water flow until I see it leaving the drain holes. I just can't pour that much water in the house during the winter due to humidity problems.

Indoors I mist the plants once a week with Epsom Salts (1tsp to a qt of water). I also mist the foliage with Fish Emulsion every other week.

The plants that are getting potted up outdoors will get a granular slow release feed. I will continue to mist with epsom salts and an occasional topping with compost and castings.

The Bonnet flav is my favorite. I can enjoy eating a small bag of regular potato chips and munching on a pepper as a sidekick...that's how simply good it can get.

Sir, Yes Sir !........lol
Shane thanks for the wake up call, although more updates happen when I can get off this crazy thing called work. Once the plants hit the soil the photos will be on the move.

Outside already eh? Man, you got bigger balls than me my friend! Thanks for the update Greg!
Unless you have a coldframe or green house don't take the chance. The plants can end up in "Frostbite Falls" without the right protection. A stunted pepper plant will produce poorly all season. I usually have the tomatoes out 1st but got a late start on them. I'm trying to pot up all the tomatoes by the weekend and get them outside. The tomatoes are a bit more forgiven in the 40 deg temps. Hopefully in 2 weeks+ I can have all the peppers outside hardening off. Too little time, too many peppers.
