PIC 1's......Pod Pornage.............2012

Here's the start on my grow log. Well no pods yet but I have to start somewhere, and away we go!

The seeds in the containers are all c.chinense. They were dunked in a germinating solution for an over-nighter on December 1st.
This was the first phase of the germination process with plantings happening every 2 weeks through the month of January.
The annum species and the mild/medium strains will get planted late Jan through early Feb.

Most of these are "Super-hots.

Here's a shot from today, things are looking up and up.

IMG_2132.jpg

Here's a unique looking seedling. It has 3 cotyledon's and a set of 3 true leaves. The seedling is a Trinidad Scorpion Green, seeds are from Chris (cc). I've seen the triple cotyledon with my Coronong's but not the triple set of true leaves at the same time

IMG_2118.jpg

Here's another seedling that caught my eye. The leaves are as dark purple as my Dutch.Hot's. This one's the Purple Bhut Jolokia seeds were also from Chris. I know the leaves will eventually turn green.....but right now they look pretty...

IMG_2136.jpg

Did somebody say "Purple"......Here's one of my overwinters. The Maui Purple. The flowers have set and soon the chili's will form...........yea

IMG_2142.jpg

And finally another overwinter and was an over-achiever/producer last season. That's why its here. It's's the TS Butch T

More to follow, soon

Greg

I grew the nards last year from seeds bought at walmart. Those things are amazing. I spoiled a few coworkers with them and the hounded me all winter for them. The seeds I bought this year did not grow true and now I have a "Mob" after me wanting some. It's hard to explain to non growers that seeds don't grow true. My favorite is when they want some veggies and you tell them thst they are not ripe yet. "What's taking them so long? Can't you make them grow faster?" AYE AYE AYE

Pic I really appreciate the way you set up your pepper pics because for someone like me who find it difficult to distinguish one pepper from another, it's teaching me the difference. I can now see how people can tell the difference between say a habanero and a Trinidad scorpion just for example. I was so bewildered when I would read glogs and people would say, "this is my NOT chocolate bhut. It is turning out to look like a red savina. ". Looking at your glog I am starting to distinguish between some peppers.

Sanarda,
Thanks for noticing. I typically grow and collect seeds from my open pollinated plants. The plants are grown in groups, so they're pretty true to grow the following year. I do isolate certain plants to regain pure seeds, also overwinter around 25 plants to insure some pod stability.Theres times that I'll purchase new seeds , varieties that I haven't grown before. I won't post a photo unless I'm sure its correctly labeled. There are some folks that sent me seeds that they crossed. I'll try to add credits for those folks in the captions beneath the plant photos. Not everyones pods look the same...I hope this helps a few peeps here...

Greg

Holy crap, so much to comment on! I'm going to break this into different comments that I'll put up as I have a few moments over the course of the day. First off, I did not realize that you are in Chicago! I have not visiting many cities in the States, but Chicago is my favourite out of the ones I've been to. Aside from one crazy assed airport that you need a train to get around in, it is stunning in many ways.

I love the idea of the agriculatural school, and I called over my wife to show her the pics you posted of the land that was donated to the city. We have something similar here called the Experimental Farm, but do to being further up north there really arent a lot of interesting peppers grown on it. Absolutely love the shot of the compost pile! Compost piles are cool, because they are the only things you say "it looks like like a steaming pile of..." and mean it as a compliment.

Yep from Chicago...........Ah, the tram at O'hare Airport. ........The airport is getting 2 additional runways, new led lighting, a bunch of stuff....my son works there, he keeps me informed of all the new gist.....
The Ag center is pretty cool. Theres a farmer from New Mexico that tends to all the brunt of it. Neighborhood volunteers help with the early morning pick and the High School students start everything from scratch in the greenhouses. They also have a large "Hydro" room , I like the commerical kitchen they have . The students are taught prep, preserving and sanitation..........Heck someone may want to Master in Micro Biology some day...........Theres always a need for a food inspector............somewhere....ha
Years back we were able to get manure when the Barnum and Bailey Circus was in town.........all kinds of "crap".........Lions, Tigers and Bears................oh my!
But that stopped for health concerns............can't even buy the good "s---t" anymore........I have a compost bin and a tumbler at home, but I'll be picking up the aged stuff at the end of the season.........
Stefan, thanks for your response

Ha..............the price just went up! Give them a breakdown from the seeds to the electric bill............................. :banghead:

Great use of the Jimmy Nardellos Greg. I will get you out some isolated Nard seeds for next year by fall.

I like the look of your Douglahs. I got Douglah seed from several people this year and planted some of each. Unfortunately the one I put in a bucket for isolation is a "mild"? Douglah. First ripe came and it tasted like a Choc Hab so it went back in the bucket line and out of isolation. I have some looking like yours in the main garden and left over seed thank goodness.

Holy smokes man! Pods look amazing, and love the pics. Huge difference with 24/7 light schedule. I bet you'll get em to give up something by the end of the season. Keep it coming Greg, love the updates.

Thanks man,Those Douglahs were off an overwintered plant, and they're nasty hot. The ones that I started from seeds are finally starting to flower. The long hot summer played havoc with the super-hots (long range bombers)............ha

Thanks Jamison,I'm determined to squeeze some pods out of those plants before the end of the season, even if I have to fire up the main lights. Starting pepper seeds in the middle of June is a 1st for me. But in doing so keeps this seasons challenge interesting...Kenosha.WI......I've stopped at the "Brat Stop" many an occasion on 94 and through the years many times either skiing or concerts at Alpine............good memories............ except for the Vaughan, Clapton concert

Every time I look at that sandwich is makes my mouth water. I grew Jimmy Nardellos last year, but I regret that did not end up using any of them on sandwiches.

It took a while to get through your last three or four updates, Greg, but
everything looks so, well, professional! From the outrageous wall-to-wall
patio to the amazing 8 week old plants to the crystal clear pics to the five-star
sandwich to the... need to breath now.

That '30 year learning curve' is showing great results, my friend.
I missed the part about St. Martin - "going", or "went"? In any case,
I hope you enjoy(ed) it immensely!

Take care, brother!

Looking great as always Greg. I always love seeing shots of your yard. You have a great eye and a green thumb my friend! What kind of sauce are you thinking of for those bird peppers? Pulled my first 2 Thai short hots last night. haven't tasted them yet but I was told they're real fire crackers.

have a great week

Italian Sausage and Peppers is also good with the "Nardo's"

Hey Paul....thanks for checking up on the glog. The St Martin trip is coming up about the same time next month, my wife can't wait. It will be good for her to gat away from those long hours at work. Me, I'm just happy to get away from here and relax, and eat fresh fish/seafood....everyday!

Hey Bill,
I've got Zimbawie, Malawie, Ethiopian, Guatemalen, Piri-Piri and Hawaiian Bird peppers Also I will use some Pegranos (AJ) and Cayanetta peppers for the Piri-Piri.
That is one hot sauce that I don't use the imerson blender or the Vitamix when processing. I use the food mill with two passes, one with the medium disk and the final run with the fine one. That pretty much elimates the fine seeds, but passes the rest of the solids.........................yum!

Very nice photo's Greg! And that meal looked soooo delicous!

Thanks Brent, for taking a look.

Here's the start to the weekend update...
