PIC 1's......Pod Pornage.............2012

Here's the start on my grow log. Well no pods yet but I have to start somewhere, and away we go!

The seeds in the containers are all c.chinense. They were dunked in a germinating solution for an over-nighter on December 1st.
This was the first phase of the germination process with plantings happening every 2 weeks through the month of January.
The annum species and the mild/medium strains will get planted late Jan through early Feb.

Most of these are "Super-hots.

Here's a shot from today, things are looking up and up.

IMG_2132.jpg

Here's a unique looking seedling. It has 3 cotyledon's and a set of 3 true leaves. The seedling is a Trinidad Scorpion Green, seeds are from Chris (cc). I've seen the triple cotyledon with my Coronong's but not the triple set of true leaves at the same time

IMG_2118.jpg

Here's another seedling that caught my eye. The leaves are as dark purple as my Dutch.Hot's. This one's the Purple Bhut Jolokia seeds were also from Chris. I know the leaves will eventually turn green.....but right now they look pretty...

IMG_2136.jpg

Did somebody say "Purple"......Here's one of my overwinters. The Maui Purple. The flowers have set and soon the chili's will form...........yea

IMG_2142.jpg

And finally another overwinter and was an over-achiever/producer last season. That's why its here. It's's the TS Butch T

More to follow, soon

Greg

Yeah, I tried that, but wasn't able to change font size, and add multiple labels within one pic. Good if your picture just has one type of pepper in it, but doesn't work for harvest shots of several types of peppers.

My husband suggested PicMonkey, which works for pics posted on Facebook, but when I tried to upload the edited pic to Photobucket, so I could post on THP, it altered the picture, cutting off the ends.

I guess I could always go old fashioned, and simply print the words on small pieces of paper, and physically place them in the photo ... but, surely there is a better way!

Yet more outstanding work, my friend! Following your grow has
given me great ideas for next year. Funny, I've been thinking
about next season already, and have hardly any ripe pods, yet!
I'm starting to worry a little, end of August coming up, cooler nights,
and Fall is around the corner. Maybe my fert routine needs to be
changed up to promote ripening, but I'm not sure what I'd do. Have
been giving a little AK fish fert and MorBloom every two weeks.
Guess that's first year pepper-grower-blues  :tear: :mope: :tear:  Ahh,
singing the blues. Good for the sole Seoul soul.

Thanks for giving the rest of us, at least me, something to shoot for, Greg.
Many more great harvests in your future!

Bonnie, if they make Photoshop Elements for PC, it's a great program.
I'll bet Elements 2 or 3 would be totally sufficient for your purposes, and
those older versions should be able to be had for a song on ebay or craig's
list, etc. I don't do much editing for these pix, but for my other stuff, I use
it a lot. Easy to use and robust. For resizing, I like Elements 2; usually I use
Elements 4. Either one has capabilities I don't even use. They must be on
a much later version by now.

Greg, the Butch T's are getting flowers now. About how long should it be from flower to ripe pod on these?

Bonnie, I do alot of that type of work within PowerPoint at work. Just paste the pic into PP, add the caption. Then select both the pic and caption, group them and then save as a .jpg. Kind of a round-a-bout way but the boss won't get a copy of Photoshop or other graphics software.

You're right about multiple layers of fonts and the sizing. I have photoshop, its an older version. It can do all the above but I haven't used it lately. Only to organize photos.
I like quick no waiting processes so PB is ok for this type of viewing....

Hey thanks once again Paul..............you're the inspiration!
Good luck with the cooler nights..............when is Harvest Moon ?.................ha
I to use Fish Emulsion, but too much nitrogen will encourage foilage and shut down flower production, and not enough will regress the plants overall growth.
I use it in moderation since the plants need to move on through the pod production. Lately I've been foliar feeding with a sprayer. That seems to be working
quick. Which I'm happy for in this time of the season...........daylight hours are shortening and the plants need to getty up!
Thanks for checking this out.......were all in this bushel together!

Gee Bill...........now I'm starting to feel bad. Are those the plants that are in (?) If they are indeed Butch T's then usually from flower it depends, but from mature size pod about 4 weeks....

This care package deserves the platter.............What a nice surprise!
This came in the mail from John (Prodigal_son)......On the top the 3 LARGE uniform pods are the "Not" White 7pot..also .6- Primo's ...with stingers! and the 4 orange pods are "Zanahoria Triangulo"......and I didn't grow those nor the Not White 7's before..
This also works out nicely since Thursday evenings at the neighborhood bar is "Pepperology"....where local chileheads meet, have a beer , talk Heat and share samples of they're home grown hots. Well I'll just have to include one of each of these babies along with some of mine for the taste testing. The rest will be enjoyed at home and deseeded for future use......Thanks again John, you're the best!

Make sure you deal us in on your night out with the "pepper" boys. It's hard to gather up a package for someone with as many varieties as yourself. I could only find 2 of mine that you didn't have, and I knew the primo's weren't your best producers this year. Those pods were shipped no more than 12 hours after harvest, looks like they showed up in stellar condition. Next year take your list down to 600 varieties or so, and make it easier on us guys!!!

Hey J.B.
Thanks again for the pepper selection. The 3 varieties were a smash! The "Not White 7" wassurprising good. The "Zanahoria" was also pleasent tasting...similar to the "Mulo de Tiro.I tried some of the "Primo" after slice off a "Brainstrain" and I swear I was hearing trainwhistles in my ears..............ha

Besides the pods there were some homemade pretzel mustards, Thai Garlic Relish, Mango Curry Dip and some other concoctions. Next week we'll share some Habanero Jelly, Scorpion Jerky and perhaps a decked out pizza with some backyard bonnets...

Its great to get together with the guys and gals.......today was alittle rough getting ready for work..............ha

later.......have a great weekend all!

Greg

That John sure is a great guy! Your chilihead bar night sounds like a great time...we need to come up with that out here in cali. Hmmm....regional chapters! I know the bubbas up in the NW are already doing something similar.

Greg thanks for the heads up on the TS green finally found a ripe one yea not a fan or on next year list. I going to powder and use to make some sauce or something else. Wow that is a great platter by John  .

I see things are still rocking like usual. Awesome care package. Have a good weekend and enjoy the possible "rain" tomorrow!

Great package and I agree, they do deserve the silver platter. Beautiful pods. And the pepperology session here in Jersey. There are enough of us Jersey growers here to form a group. That is such a great idea. Enjoy those super hot delights..... :fireball:

Yep, those are the ones in question. I have some pods setting now too. If I get a break in the rain the we're getting from Isaac I'll try to get some pics. Now that I have a special Macro lens for my camera I might even be able to get some good ones.

Bill

Finally.....an update not much happening here. I'm getting ready for a 10 day vacation....."Ya-Hoo!"..."Island Dew"
So the garden will be on autopilot until I get back. I'll probably pick up a 2nd dehydrator to help out with the pod drying...
Anyways heres the "Paver Patch"

IMG_4515.jpg

The plants are starting to boom with pods and waves of flowers.
The evenings have been cooler, so not as much watering going on...................Stress Those Plants!

IMG_4509.jpg

It's hard to tell by the photo but hers a row of Overwinters, about 16 (18 gal) containers.
The hottest being the Douglah, Butch T, and the Indian Carbon......then the heat drops down to your typical 7/Pot......ouch!

IMG_4538.jpg

If you like taste of the Jalapeno you may just want to try this one...."Hawaiian Waialua". Which packs in the pods, a very heavy producer.

IMG_4526.jpg

"Belize Scotch Bonnet"

IMG_4520.jpg

"Jamaican Market Scotch Bonnet".......Montego Bay

Wow I just deleted some photos............Ha....here's a few more

IMG_4525.jpg

"Yellow Jamaican Scotch Bonnet"

IMG_4534.jpg

"TFM Scotch Bonnet"

IMG_4548.jpg

Yes....more Bonnets,........................I'm stocked up with them......ha
Here's a Jamaican plant that's 12 weeks from seed. I intend to grow this indoors through the winter. Maybe some clones, or better yet some pods!
Superbowl Sunday Salsa....................perhaps

IMG_4541.jpg

Heres the stem from that plant its 3/4" wide..................freakish
I hope to have some new info when I get back...............maybe some more seeds!
Thanks for taking a look its been a very interesting season...

Greg

Great update, Greg. The SB's look beautiful, the Hawaiian Waialua sounds interesting! Big fan of the Jalapeno so  Have a great vacation and lot's of fun (food, drinks, some more food)!

So Greg, you have the garden set on Auto Pilot, too bad you can set the plants to Auto Harvest. It would sure save alot of bending over and stressing the back. :)

Looks Great Bro. BTW, the poorly looking Butch T has to nice pods developing on it now. Going to be transfering them all over to 3 gallon Root Pouches this weekend.

Haha........Auto Harvest......good one Bill.

If we get the type of wind that has a field goal attempt heading for the left upright but ends up in the right corner of the end zone, then I may have a "Rolling Harvest !

"It can only happen in the "Windy City"...

Nice Greg... what steps will you take when bringing those young plants in? You mentioned that you wanted to keep those growing. It's obviously not going to be your typical snip..snip..chop..chop..scrub..scrub and put in new soil to chill for awhile. The reason why I ask is for pest purposes. I know you overwinter a lot of plants, plus a whole gang of seedlings, and lettuce,coleus,etc.... You had no pests inside last year. Not even a single aphid! Are you going just submerge the whole plant? Can you wash roots on a plant that young without setting it back? I have a young plant and have been wondering what the best way to do it is. Enjoy your vacation.

Very good question, was wondering the same thing!

Hey.....
The Jamaican plant that photo'ed is one of four that spent 12 hrs outside and 12 indoors. Before I brought those in for good (2 weeks ago) I removed them from the 5 1/4" pots rinsed off the old soil, which wasn't much and I repotted them into 3 gal containers using a mix of " Happy Frog and Dr Earth's Potting soil with its extra ammendments. The pots were cleaned with bleach. Then I gave the entire plants a spray with Bonides .Mite X, which covers white flies, mites, mealy's and other crap..The plants were placed in a large plastic trash bags and tightly closed overnight. That helps suffocate any pest issues within the solution.
.I'll do the same for the overwinters. Those get stripped of the leaves and.........................well I'll just have to do a glog update when that happens. Regardless what medium you use it may contain some type of larve. That's unavoidable unless you heat up the soil at 160 degree oven for an hour.
Hahaha..................that's the last thing I want to taste is an "Earthy Tasting Pizza" next time I make one.
The tip I can recommend is to check the plants often, if caught early you can rid all pests. Sometimes it can take 2 to 3 weeks to control aphids and other gnatty pests. If left unnoticed it could be devastating....... :tear: ......knock on (overwintered) wood I haven't had any insect problems other than a few roaming ants which get taken care of fast.

Sure you can wash the roots when repotting, as with house plants, some pepper plants can be finicky when the roots are messed with. You could have some leaf loss or a slight set back. But once the light turns green......ha..........you'll see the new growth appear with a vengence. I hope I answered your (?'s)

Time for a Bowl of Chili and an ice cold brew................
