PIC 1's......Pod Pornage.............2012

Here's the start on my grow log. Well no pods yet but I have to start somewhere, and away we go!

The seeds in the containers are all c.chinense. They were dunked in a germinating solution for an over-nighter on December 1st.
This was the first phase of the germination process with plantings happening every 2 weeks through the month of January.
The annum species and the mild/medium strains will get planted late Jan through early Feb.

Most of these are "Super-hots.

Here's a shot from today, things are looking up and up.

IMG_2132.jpg

Here's a unique looking seedling. It has 3 cotyledon's and a set of 3 true leaves. The seedling is a Trinidad Scorpion Green, seeds are from Chris (cc). I've seen the triple cotyledon with my Coronong's but not the triple set of true leaves at the same time

IMG_2118.jpg

Here's another seedling that caught my eye. The leaves are as dark purple as my Dutch.Hot's. This one's the Purple Bhut Jolokia seeds were also from Chris. I know the leaves will eventually turn green.....but right now they look pretty...

IMG_2136.jpg

Did somebody say "Purple"......Here's one of my overwinters. The Maui Purple. The flowers have set and soon the chili's will form...........yea

IMG_2142.jpg

And finally another overwinter and was an over-achiever/producer last season. That's why its here. It's's the TS Butch T

More to follow, soon

Here's the weekend update...

IMG_4190.jpg

Lookie-Here...................Back off, they're mine....................ha
Heres a care package from Brian "Justaguy"........Nice........."Jimmy Nardellos"....those are some great Italian fryers, somehow they missed my seed roster for the year, but Brian came through! Also a couple of Yellow Fatalii's crossed back from a Falalii x Savina. Theres a few Cumari's which are cool since I didn't plant them, so I have seeds for the next grow.......I bet they have a bite to them!
Check back later and see what I did for dinner with those "Nardo's"....

..

What's this you might ask?..............Well this is a high school thats 4 blocks from my house. The Ag school teaches horticulture, farming, food prep and commercial processing. This is also the home of our Southwest Side Garden Club. We are one of 22 clubs in our district. The room that we use for our meetings is large enough for a district meeting (if we have to hold one).........ha
Why am I showing this ? keep flipping........

IMG_4240.jpg

The school was built on this property. This was the last farm within the city limits of Chicago. It was family owned from 1860. The family donated the land about 10 yrs ago to the City of Chicago, Board of Ed, with a provision that neither commercial or residental property could be zoned to build on..............cool! I remember when I was a kid, my dad would stop here. There was a small frame home with a farm stand. Tomatoes and Sweet Corn..........and huge Mellons...............who doesn't like Mellons.........
Today some of the garden club members volunteered to either weed, transplant perennials or pick produce. I helped transplant , and turn over the dirt. Wow do I hurt tonight. School starts Monday and we really decked up the main drag......

IMG_4241.jpg

Manure..................I hate Manure!.........HA......Heres a newly working compost pile, I 'm picking up some of the 3 year old shit.........oops...At the end of November. That will top my raised beds for the winter.
So much for this story........Heres some plant and pod shots!

IMG_4196.jpg

These plants were seeded 8 weeks ago. The difference is the Bonnets on the left have spent the last 7 weeks with 12 hrs outdoors and the other 12 indoors under my T8's. The same plants on the right have spent the last 7 wks outdoors only..............big difference....huh

IMG_4201.jpg

Once again, heres the "Orozco". What does it taste like, well if you've ever sat in a baseball dugout chewing and spitting out sunflower seed shells.....its pretty much the same. The inside guts is pretty much stemy/seedy..................ha

IMG_4203.jpg

"Zimbawie Bird".................when I get enough of these, other birds, Piri-piri and Seranos, I'll be making some sauce...

IMG_4204.jpg

Some plants that I haven't photographed yet...

More photos once I get a response...

Ok......heres what I did with those "Nardo's"

From L to R.......Hungarian Wax Peppers, Garlic, Vadalia Onion, Home pickled Banana Peppers, fresh Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary and Italian Basil. Provolone Cheese, Sea Salt, Bonda Ma Jacques/ Naga Morich infused Olive oil, Nardo Peppers, Top Sirlion sliced roast (rare). Hoagie Rolls

....

IMG_4254.jpg

Slice the onions, Peppers......fire up the pan on high and add 1 tbl of infused oil. Add the vegetables until tender crisp. Add 1 more tbl of oil and work in the beef and herbs. When the beef is seared but still tender remove the pan from the heat.

IMG_4257.jpg

Slit open the roll, stuff in the pleasure and top with pro-vo. Place the roll in a deep dish pan and place under the "salamander" until the cheese melts......for mine 20 seconds....................ouch.............HOT!

Steak Hoagie...

IMG_4263.jpg

Heres the plating.............Steak Hoagie with cross cut black pepperd potato chips and a cold "Peroni" Italian Brew......

If I may...
I used to cook professionally and that "Steak Hoagie" as you call it looks more like a BAD ASS "Philadelphia Steak Sandwich"!!!!
YUMMY...late at night here and making me hungry looking at that!
Some INCREDIBLE Pod Porn and growing area too!
Mark

Anytime Greg the meal does look awesome your FDA bonnet have a great shape. What is the max height for a scotch bonnet plant? Trying to figure out for next year list and do not want to end up like this year with plants out growing their house again. Thanks for any advice

Thanks, .....you scared me......I'm glad you didn't say it looks like a "Chicago Italian Beef" sandwich................that will be for another occasion.......ha
Thanks for your comments...................well appreciated.........

Nice pods, my white habs are loaded! Need to get out thee and start picking.

The weather here in Chi-Town is starting to change for the good. No more wilted plants, and plenty of buds forming

None of the c.chinense grow very tall. I'd say 3 ft max, but most grow laterally. I'm pushing some Bonnets into possibly flowering and fruiting before November. I started the seeds mid June,. More Jamaican, these were from Montego Bay mkt. All plants have the same traits except for one. That one could be a West Indian Red, which also grows in the hills...

How am I doing sansei. ? 28 days old from hooking. "march" SB.

Sansei or Sensei?..................ha
Your plants are doing well, when will you move those outdoors.? Yes those are the lastest round of Bonnets. The plants are doing fine and I can see that they will be branching out later this week. Hopefully some fruit before the end of the season. I like a good challenge.

That is an update! Those nards are apple sweet. My young seedlings are feeling the affects of tap water and too much rain, so much easier to grow inside. I like the "Chicago Outfit" police line up background for those pods. Those Douglahs are meaner than Capone!

Geez...yet another time I thought I posted something yesterday only to come back to it GONE!!! I am sure its keyboard actuator failure. Anyway...you just missed a sammich TD, that bad boy would've been a nice entry! I love my steak, and BBQ and slow smoked this and that...but a properly done sammy for Bfast, lunch or Supper is about as good as it gets.

Pic I really appreciate the way you set up your pepper pics because for someone like me who find it difficult to distinguish one pepper from another, it's teaching me the difference. I can now see how people can tell the difference between say a habanero and a Trinidad scorpion just for example. I was so bewildered when I would read glogs and people would say, "this is my NOT chocolate bhut. It is turning out to look like a red savina. ". Looking at your glog I am starting to distinguish between some peppers.

Holy crap, so much to comment on! I'm going to break this into different comments that I'll put up as I have a few moments over the course of the day. First off, I did not realize that you are in Chicago! I have not visiting many cities in the States, but Chicago is my favourite out of the ones I've been to. Aside from one crazy assed airport that you need a train to get around in, it is stunning in many ways.

I love the idea of the agriculatural school, and I called over my wife to show her the pics you posted of the land that was donated to the city. We have something similar here called the Experimental Farm, but do to being further up north there really arent a lot of interesting peppers grown on it. Absolutely love the shot of the compost pile! Compost piles are cool, because they are the only things you say "it looks like like a steaming pile of..." and mean it as a compliment.

Hey J,
My Nardellos and Marconi's from last year had some plant issues. Heck if I thought I 'd get some like the ones Brian sent I would have grown a row of them, lined them up against the "garage" and taken a shot at them........................with the camera, that is.,

Haha..............Capone.......Downtown Chicago has a "City Beneath a City". Theres numerous connecting tunnels that date back to prohibition. Now there used primarily for fiber- obtics. Back in the haydays those tunnels were used for the "Booze Train"..........oh and yes, coal for the buildings...............
