Yep. The series are sold as PA speakers, bass and keyboard etcc, but a long long long long long long think early 90's ago, I bought a used 160w Tube Peavey head that came with 2 - straight 4 x 12 cabs. And these were in them. I love the sound of them. 
 
These were made for guitar... my limited Google search shows that peavey included these in some guitar combos (as well as bass). So, maybe it's a paper instead of kevlar cone. I dunno. But, they are great and the mid's are sharp!

Sorry TNR, you lost me with the Metal Zone. I mean Why? Why buy an all tube replica of a 5150 and put a cheap stomp box in front of the clean channel to get your dirt? That makes no sense to me.
 
I do love my TS-9, but I run it in front of the dirt channel with the gain all the way down. Only there to tighten the dirt, not to provide any of its own.

I have seen that video and I know how to use a TS9/808. Great pedals. Tried and true and are used to drive the tubes a bit harder for that natural break-up. And like I said, it is a good pedal (and at one time was NOT a cheap pedal, there are just no many out there nowadays!). It gets a bad rap because n00bz buy it because of the insane distortion it can cranks out and they misuse it. Obviously with poor tweaking through a cheap SS amp it is going to sound like ass. Run it through a quality amp with the proper tweaking and it will hang with the best of them. I know this isn't your normal formula for getting a killer tone, but it has worked for me and honestly, there is no right or wrond. The moment I have the funds to get some decent recording equipment I will show you what it is capable of (all I have is a crappy camera mic).
 
LOL. My FIRST PEDAL was an HM-2, the precursor to the Metal Zone and am I dating myself?!??!?! Loved that pedal since my first amp was a solid state Fender 20 watter, without that pedal, I'd never get those umm. Metallica sounds (Ride the Lightning days folks).
 
I have a timmy clone that I like better than the tube screamer in front of a tube amp, but haven't played through any pedal for a long time. Keep forgetting to looks for a used decimator

Look at Pat O'Brien from Cannibal Corpse. He runs an MT-2 in front of a Mesa Triple Rectifier. Something most would consider unforgiveable sin. I know the guitarists for Crowbar and At The Gates use MT-2s as well.

Lots and lots I mean of guitarist use an MT-2 in front of a tube amp live, but the ones that I personally know have had them modded!

I experimented with it a while ago, but I didn't like the sound. You really couldn't turn off the crunch and use it as a clean boost and I found that the crunched signal going into a dirty amp didn't sound all that great to me. YMMV.
 
 
But, you can only do so much Slayer so,
I've been doing the blues thing lately with the TS-9 and a MXR chorus pedal hooked to my American Strat on the neck pickup through the clean channel on my XXX. Gives a really nice and mellow sound. I think TB might even like it.

There are different mods out there, monte allums, keeley (like you said), and a few on those DIY forums. I can tell the difference, but nothing an inline eq couldn't handle.
 
How the heck do people even play these 8, 9, 10+ stringed guitars and basses? I played with an 8 string Schecter out of curiousity at the music shop a while back. I couldn't comfortably reach all the frets. Maybe if I had freakishly long alien fingers or something. I guess to each their own.
 
These postings make me want to get a new geetar.
 
I finally lugged out my 6262 and have been causing cracks in the drywall for a week or two now.
