RocketMan 2014 - Resurrection

Wow, first growing season in the new house and I'm totally stoked for this one. Lots of prep work still to be done but there's plenty of time to get it done before plant out. So, here is a pic of where Pepper Row will be going in:

I'll be coming out about another 18 to 24 inches from the fence. The brick line will move out to the new edge and the Ivey will be kept cut back to wher it is now so the fence doesn't show through, she who must be obeyed has made it known that she doesn't want to see it :)

I'm still working on the list and as these will probably be in for a while I'm actually thinking about rather a short list using the peppers I use most often in sauces but can't get locally like Fataliis and planting 3 or 4 of each.

The other, non-pepper stuff will be growing in the big bed at the end of the row. We'll be putting in raised beds there but first I have to remove this bast@rd:

We'll, after making the Mustard and Sauce I went to pull up my files from te extrrnal hard drive I keep them on in found it died. I have back ups for some if it but lost a lot of label designs. But that's ok, I like these better.

Hey it's the freakin weekend and time to get smoking.

First off I bought every Jalapeño they had.

Yep, only 1 tray worth :( Going to give these 4 hours of Apple wood smoke and then into the dehydrator. Gotta order more pucks for the electric smoker then will be making a big batch if smoked Jal Powder

Second got the big smoker fired up for a big Pork Loin.

The top one is rubbed with an apple maple bacon rub. The bottom is rubbed first with some of Smokemasters smoked Manzano powder and then with some left over Emrils Essance.

Happy weekend y'all and don't forget to Spring Forward tonight ;)

Plant out will be determined when I have more than 1 hook :( but sim hoping to be able to get the peppers in ground in early April. Pepper Row will be a certainity this year. The raised beds might have to be put on hold till next season as funds are being shifted to repairs on the house, she's over 30 and has a few issue plus a fee things I've never seen before. I'd post a pic but there's no difference though I'm hoping that with the dehydrator going on some smoked Jals and it being warmer in the room now, I'll start seeing some plants coming up.
:)

With several Hell Yeah's in here and PMs I've received, here is s preview of The Grow Log Database. This started out a just a simple way to track your seed bank and kind of exploded into what your seeing here now as more and more ideas came to me about how to make this a better tool for us to track and better out grow seasons.

BIG thanks go out to romy6, MGOLD86, stc3248, Pulpeteer and Stickman for steping up to be Beta testers. They're doing a great job helping me to find and squash the bugs and to modify the interface so it works in the different Operating Systems. Current development is for Windows based systems with MGOLD86 doing some testing in OSX on his Mac.

Disclaimer, the screen shots your going to see were taken at several points in the development of the database. The screens from early in the development that have significant changes have additional screen shots to show their updates.

So here it is:

Main screen, this is what it initially opens to and what it goes back to when you close a form.

Add a new seed.

And update a seed already in the database.

Yep you can start up to 5 36. 72 or 104 cell seed trays.

Each cell is a switch so you can address each cell individually. This is the Tray Tool where you can clear out a whole tray or individual cells.

This is where you set up your growing medium. I'll probably make an update feature for it too so you can add changes.

Bump for more :)

Bump!

Very cool!

Edit: Regarding failed hard drive.

Is it clucking like a chicken?  If so data recovery will be tough. In the past I have tried multple starts (power on, then off). Turned it upside down, and even put them in the freezer, don't know why but it worked sometimes. We rarely loose data from failed drives.

New opening window, notice the button for adding Veggie seeds and there's also a button to take you to the users guide.

It comes out as a 3 x 5 card.

Devv, no it's ticking like it's trying to access data. I've jumped it into other systems and a slave drive and hooked up using my USB adapter and nothing and yep, even froze it. She Dead!

OK, I see you know the tricks ;)

Yeah when they click, or cluck, it's stick a fork in it time.

So is this a database you're going to put on a server? No that can't be right, you're in Access. Haven't used Access since the NT4 days, and that was to create a shopping cart db for a website. Sure looks like Access is feature rich!

Access took a BIG turn towards the better with 2007. 2007 still used the Switchboard but with 2010 came the Navigation Form. What your seeing is the Navigation Form in Access 2010 but I've also been able to mimic it in 2007. I like the way it works a lot better. Right now I'm working through an issue that seem to be coming from Access Run-time. If you have Office installed on your PC it seems to run fine but if your having to rely on Access Run-time it's glitchy. That's using Packaged solution version not the actual database.

Oh, yeah, I started off as a hardware guy back in the days when we had to use Multimeters and O-Scopes as a part of trouble shooting. I worked on missile systems in the Army and had to be able to troubleshoot and repair them so it easily translated to Computers. Worked on the Geek Squad for a while and one night we were all sitting around waiting to get out and talking about what we were doing. I told them I had to recap a mobo. Well they were looking at me like I was speaking some strange language, your going to what? Why don't you just get a new one? Hum, well lets see, mobo is still current generation. New mobo $200 to $500 or a hand full of Capacitor, maybe $5.00? Yeah, I'm recaping the mobo :) Next thing I know they're wanting to know how to do it.

I read up on the Access Run-time, free and I'm sure a lighter weight application. One good thing with our Microsoft licensing is we employees can load Office for free, or I probably wouldn't have a copy. Has anyone beta tested it with Open Office? I have that on my Linux box, my OLD Linux box.

After a quick look this morning I may be getting a second hook, another Jalapeno, up. The warmer room hopefully is helping. I'll check it closer tonight when I get home and might post a pic.

Hope y'all have a great week

Awesome man. What's the long term plan for the db? You gonna release it as a stand alone? Would be cool to integrate it with THP somehow. I was also thinking about setting up a wiki for the site but time is just so limited.

Hey maxc, initially it will be released as a stand alone. I've had a couple of suggestions for additions to it that I'm considering also such as a Garden Planner.

Integration with THP or with a Wiki is something I'll look at for a possible upgrade. For instance I think it would be really cool to have it integrated with an online Pepper catalog from which you can select your peppers and have it import some details about the plant say if it needs additional CalMag to get the bigger peppers or such.

Thanks for the suggestion and keep your eye out for the release.

Man, 2 1/2 weeks and still nothing coming up. Thought I had one, sure looked like it but noting has happened with it since. Never taken this long to get hook up before but then this is my first time starting indoors with this crazy winter weather we've had though I don't want to move anything outside yet.

:( Humm...

They'll be up soon. Some of these guys just take their time. I had some pop after 40 days. Makes initial seed planting timing difficult, but hey we do it for the heat right?
