SKULLBIKERS Fun with peppers in 2021 GLOG

And so it begins, another year of growing some peppers. This will be a sort of continuation of last year

as several of those plants are still going(and many got whacked and ended up on the burn pile).

Anyway, I have 3 trays of peppers sown and many have germinated already(mostly annums). I wanted to compare several different jalapeños for taste in real time. This tray is all jalapeños, ten types from 7 different vendors. The seeds in block 3 are from 2014.

Another tray with annums at each end and mostly rocotos in the middle(and they're taking their sweet time).

As I continue to try and catch up on pics taken while the site was down.

Later I'll post some pods picked last week.

The variegated Scarlett's Chili X Poblano F2 is still chugging along and has a few more pods showing their stuff.

Whoa........and here come the F3's.

Have you tasted any of the Scarlett's Chili x Poblano yet? I can eat any hot pepper in the world, but I was surprised at the level of heat in my grow out. Definitely not super hots, but a far cry from the mild pepper I intended to create for me. A few of my selections I decided to go forward with on the same cross.

I have one Sugar Rush Peach plant putting out pods that have the end kind of sucked in.

The peppers of my Sugar Rush Peach does the same. Or at least it did... I had to cut it back and it hasn't produced for a while now.

I got my seeds from Chris Fowler. All peppers had a very irregular shape, and many had the shape you show. I attribute it to the climate, but in reality don't know.

My seeds came(i think) from Refining Fire Chilies and I think that's where he also gets them. My other plants produce longish pods with a kind of flattened blossem end. The Sugar Rush Peach, PeppaPeach, and Sugar Rush Red are taking the hot and rainy season like super troopers! They kind of produce in waves.

I noticed the other day that I had some strange stuff going on with my Chichimeca Jalapenos. There are three plants in a 25 gal container. Two of the plants started putting out flower clusters on their own stem, as not at a leaf node. One is doing that plus the regular single flower at a leaf node and producing jalapeno pods. One is just doing the flower cluster thing and one is producing just standard flowers and pods. Also to note, the cluster flowers are different than the standard flowers. This is the first I have ever seen this. I first thought it was just an odd plant until I traced the branches and saw that the one plant had both.

I went out to water my Brainstrain plants yesterday afternoon and noticed some thinning of the branches on one of the plants. I took a closer look and..............BINGO........#@$&*........hornworm!

As long as I was out there I decided to pick some more of the pods that were ready.

I then went over and picked a mix of Sugar Rush Peach, Sugar Rush Red, and PeppaPeach.

This post is somewhat in reference to this thread started by @SpainChillihead a while back. https://thehotpepper.com/threads/interested-in-kirmizi-kahramanmaras-and-shabu-seeds.74896/

Anyway, I hunted around and found my old saved Albanian Red Hot seeds from 2016. It's usually a crap-shoot on my old seeds whether they will germinate or not as I believe some got super-heated in the moving truck when I moved to Florida. Well, I planted some in July and a few germinated. One is now flowering and the first pod is showing. 🎉 It's like party time growing peppas 🎉 in FLORIDA 😎!

Wow, congratulations my friend!
Glad my message woke your hunger for Albanian red hot pepper. Although I am happier when I read that some old and battered seeds have managed to germinate!
Good luck.

I'm still looking for Albanian red hot pepper seeds in Europe ... this is hell!

I look forward to photos of your ripe pods.

Cheers!!

Chichimeca Jalapenos mm very strange indeed they look very productive will enjoy seeing more pictures and seeing the Progress, the flower difference is very unusual haven't heard the name before Chichimeca but whatever that change is it's beautiful to see.🙂

I've got my eye on them, I'll see what they do in the next few weeks. The one thing I've learned over the years is that if you have a lot of plants you're going to see some strange things with some of them.

True I've thrown away a fair few mutations in my time which today are grown on by many.

I’ve grown out seeds from some mutations and occasionally you get something good and sometimes just a junk plant. But…….there is only one way to find out. I’ve been lucky as I’ve always had the space to do it.

I’ll ferment about 2 pounds of them and freeze dry the remainder of the mash, after the plants stop producing so heavily.

Having said that……..I just blended up another 1 1/2 pints of that good ol’ Brainstrain mash.
So the freeze dried is for powder?

So the freeze dried is for powder?

Freeze dryed mash can be used for powder or for anything that you would normally use the fresh mash for like ferments, cooked sauces, etc. Unlike dehydrated things, freeze dryed things can be reconstituted to very near their original state/consistancy. I have a large box of ferments in mylar bags that I cooked/pasturized over the last several years ready to reconstitute and finish up whenever I would choose.
