Spicy Chickona's MMXIII Grow Log

Hello everyone.

Wasn't going to do a grow log this year, but then thought maybe someone could learn from my mistakes. ;o(

So here we go. last year I started my plants mid January and paid the price with mr frost, it was difficult watching everyone starting their plants.

Start off with the building of the new grow light boxes and maybe will get some germination going by tomorrow.

Geez Jeff... despite the bad luck you had at the start of the season, your surviving plants look like champs! The pics really show the results of cropping back the primary growth nodes when the seedlings are still pretty small. I don't think I've seen chiles with such a thick growth habit before. I assume you picked a lot of pods off the plants before the latest round of pics? Cheers!

Great show Jeff!

First group of shots...second to last pic...yellow pods??? Bonnets?

You nailed it!! What is really weird is that if you look in the shadows of that same pic, you can see red ones with the exact same shapes, but I never planted any - intentionally that is. ;o)

You see this is what I like about this place, you folks notice things with your vast growing knowledge!! I was going to mention: " As you can see there is no main stem - ect" but thought I would see it someone would notice and mention it. lol didn't take long that's for sure. I will say that if stripping was not implemented this year, there would not have been near the production - even as pathetic as it was. Ya I show some great pod pictures and shots of beautiful plants and gardens but to keep it real there were at least 1500 plants that had nothing or maybe one or two pods on them. Not complaining. lol that is life in the pepper world. ;o)

Think there were 2 pickings before those pics were taken, plus those pics were taken about 2 weeks after our first non killer frost, many many pods did not ripen - hate to see that. ;o(

Just one circle showing the hundreds of pods that never made it. sad!

Great color on those Jeff! The pics are nice too, looks like it's time to update the old website huh?

Thanks, Hit that square on the head. Had lots of folks complain because we discontinued whole or split pods, so you guessed it.

Have to take them from this:

Been checking your glog out steady, have to say you did quite well!! Most who post here I think live in this matrix, wish I had the time, wish you well for next season and if there are any seeds you need, you need only ask; if I have them their yours.

Hi Jeff,

Amazing pictures about the dried peppers.
How do you preserve their colours? I always have issues with the yellow ones, since they bacame rather brownish, than yellow. Is it something related to the temperature? If so, could you share the secret?

Yes it is heat that dis-colors them, large companies use sulfur or gas to prevent this from happening, no thank-you. ;o)

Take a look at posts: 163 - 189 - 192 and you will see how we dry our pods. They take longer but well worth it in the end.

Cheers, Jeff
Some of your may remember this first pick from last year, we saved the seeds and planted this year and the outcome was truly unexpected. out of more than 100 plants every bush produced something different in shapes and colors. just amazing to see and very prolific as well.

Very nice color on those dried pods, I see the route you took makes the product much more appealing.

Camera skills aint too shabby neither!

Greetings, growing chili’s can be one of the most rewarding endeavors one may ever know, from seed to harvest; each stage has their own elegant beauty and challenges.
Harvest time is the ultimate pay off, the cycle of life has made full circle as Mother Nature rewarded ones hard work.

As the season comes to a close for many of us and just starting for some, it is nice to look back at the gifts given and ponder where the future may lead us, after growing chili’s for more than 36 years I’m still joy-ed and surprised at the beauty with every passing growing season.

I though sharing some of our gifts in oil painting style would be nice, hope you enjoy them and if you have special picture you would like to see oil painted; just pm me with the highest res possible and I will do it for you.

Thanks for stopping by! Cheers Jeff
