Spicy Chickona's MMXIII Grow Log

Hello everyone.

Wasn't going to do a grow log this year, but then thought maybe someone could learn from my mistakes. ;o(

So here we go. last year I started my plants mid January and paid the price with mr frost, it was difficult watching everyone starting their plants.

Start off with the building of the new grow light boxes and maybe will get some germination going by tomorrow.

Great to see you back at it Jeff. Garden's looking great and those plants are going keeping you busy and cursing hot spots as you powder them up in no time :)

And just to reiterate what Shane said, I've learned a ton just from reading your grows and am a total Fan / Follower of your build threads. Just goes to show the old saying is true. "You can't keep a good man down!"

I've been pretty busy around my place, so I haven't had time to check your grow until now. All I can say is Ouch! That was a real kick in the b@!!& you got from Ma Nature. Glad to see you were able to recoup something after most of your plants got shredded by hail. Maybe it's time to look into low row covers. I was talking to HabaneroHead, and he said he's been dealing with the same thing, though his grow isn't on your scale. He says the commercial pepper farmers in his region have a netting they stretch out over the plants on a low framework of electrical conduit. Earlier in the season they use sheet poly over the framework, and swap it out for the netting when it warms up enough. Just a thought...

Wow! quite an ambitious grow you have going on! Looks very nice!

Really sorry for the hail damage, I keep reading about Ma Nature tearing things up this year...what a shame.

Good luck with the rest of your season!

Even tho they are small do to mother natures wrath, the difference for me stripping and not is night and day and we will always strip from this season forward. If lucky 60 days till frost; so still some time for growth. ;o)

Real instructive set of pics Jeff, Thanks for posting! Glad to see your grow this year wasn't a total washout. What type of plastic mulch do you use for your peppers? I'm using black plastic "solar mulch", and swear by it this far north. Cheers!

Hi Jeff,

Beautiful pics, as always! They are like paintings. Amazing how well your stripped plants are doing. I did not do any stripping, but topping on my peppers in pots, and I can see the difference. They are definately bushier. There were two plants in the ground hit by the hail, and they became bigger, and they are setting pods earlier, then the others. It is working, and I am going to try it out next year!
Keep posting the pics! :-)

Wooo Hoooo....I knew you'd keep on keepin on! Just like you always do! If you wanted easy growing you'd move down here to Socal....that ain't you Jeff! You grow tropical plants just south of the Arctic Tundra that's what you do! Haha! Happy times ahead my friend!

Great looking grow, Jeff.  One of my OW bhuts got stripped by a hornworm.  It has already recovered and appears to be on a pace to outperform the ones that didn't get stripped.

When you say "stripped", I'm assuming you are talking about the ones that received hail damage? If so, that wasn't a set back at all.

Looks great.
