stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

Dam dem pod pics are awesome bro!  Bet da wait will be worth it, have a great week ^_^
The little tomatoes get sauted in Olive Oil with Onion and Peppers for my morning egg white omelet! I don't know if it's Jerk Chicken...but something is gonna be cooking this weekend! I am thinking Rellenos with some fresh Poblanos!

That's funny! Glad you have near-total coverage with a combined-arms force. Now if they would only come up with something like a predatory microbe that would take out things like wilts and MMV...
Fantastic that you're having Chinense pods coloring up, your grow is just sick Shane! :)
My Pepper Defense Unit is on Point! Hahaha...some predatory mites and nematodes would be a nice addition, but something that could attack a virus would be over the top! Haha...So far the grow is Sick, Bad and Phat...all in the good way!

Is that the Indian Carbon that is almost ready?

That Scotch Bonnet looks amazing. Two more months of drooling at your peppers here before I really get into the swig of things ;)
The final ripening pod is one of the 7 Pot Rennies!!! So stoked! I am going out of town for a couple weeks at the beginning of July. If the drip system keeps them happy, I should come home to enough that I can afford to share some pods...so stay tuned!

I do the same with little tomatoes but I use the FL Everglades Wild, great minds think alike   I did one this morning with a white bhut but no pics, that dish you describe is super tasty! I only said Jerk because of the Scotch Bonnet, but you da boss so I’ll just sit back and enjoy da ride ^_^

Congrats on the Brain podding up!

Awesome pic of the 7 Pot Rennie.....and I see you like it too:)

The Jamaican Scotch Bonnet has an interesting shape, glad to see they're coloring up.

As for red tomatoes of the vine, not here, they have to ripen on the table or the birds peck them.

I saw you're going on vacation in July, me too, I hate to travel when I have plants that need watering, gonna have to trust the timers!

Have a great week!

Oh yeah, I do kind of the same thing in that some Grape tomatoes get mixed with some garlic, onion, peppers, sweet and hot and some either Pancheta or Prosciutto and a little dry white wine, thickened with a bit or cornstarch and then mixed in with some thin spaghetti. Good Stuff and it makes mama happy.

Congrats on the Rennie!   Everything looks awesome, and even a nice pull to post.  Looks like a great grow going on there!

You undoubtedly are northeast of where we once lived in Scripps Ranch.  All that time I though the hot offshore winds were Santa Anas.  They were just carrying the heat from your place in Poway!

Looking awesome Shane!  We are going to see a nice shift from onsies and twosies of supers to a tablefull!  Good luck on that 7 Pot Rennie, I am interested in seeing how that one turns out.

Also, great profile pic!

Incredible harvests already! Yeap on the Rellenos. I just recently dicovered the joys of Pablanos. They ask $5 bucks a pound for those puppies around here. I'm a tightwad I guess.
Pretty good though -blistered in the smoker, peel 'em next day, stuff with beans, beef, quinoa, and such, then bake.
As for finding a super-hot at the nurseries -forget it. I saw some habs at a mom and pop hardware this spring -shocking.
Keep up the good works, like poypoyking said, "(only) two more months" Until then we'll have to get by on pod porn. Are those Rainbird soaker rings you are using?

Great minds think alike Ramon!!! Ummmm...and sometimes I get lucky! Never done jerk, will have to try it. The Poblanos will be ready fo-sho this weekend though, so I must do my duty and make room for more pods!

Thanks Scott...I too have had some trouble with birds pecking a few tomatoes. There are two fledgling bluebirds that have figured out not that the red ones are delicious. Oh well...if they were jays I'd go a bit more extreme on their butts! Nervous about this trip...critical time in plantville! Ughhh...inlaw family reunion though, and I have a few days leave before hand to watch them and see how they're doing. I will probably up the water schedule to a bit too much just to be safe.  Brain, Primos...everything with the exception of one of my largest plants is podding up great...my 7 Pot Congo SR is being a bit stubborn, but she'll shap out of it!

Nothing like fresh maters and chiles to make a dinner special! Well...with the exception of some signature RM Smoked Haba-Peno hot sauce!

Thanks Doc! Can't wait to get home and take a look at things tomorrow...have a feeling there is a bunch of awesomeness going on! I think the amount of awesome is increasing exponentially as the weather gets better and plants get bigger! Scripps is HOT too...but I think Poway may be a bit hotter. Chris over in the High Desert is the one sending the wind our way though!

Fingers crossed...I think those big pulls are coming in fast! That is the biggest bonus to the two week trip at the beginning of July...coming home to some major develpments! There's been a bunch of talk about these Rennies, I am so glad I got the opportunity to grow them out. I will keep some pure to spread that love for next season!

Thanks JJJ...Poblanos are good...but NUMEX Big Jims are really where the Relleno love is at! You gotta try that one if you haven't already. They make everything more delicious...sandwich, burger, sauce...mmmmm. Same prep...I usually roast and toss them in a bucket of icewater until the roasting is done, peel/seed them all at once then either freeze or use right away. The soaker rings are a home creation. just 1/4" soaker tube with a T fitting.

Woot for the Rennie. Super excited about my two little babies also. Gorgeous pod.
Whatup Pia! Glad you're growing the Rennies too! They sound like they're going to be amazing...and HOT! I will let y'all know on the hot part...maybe my first vid of the season this weekend??? I don't know if I am ready, but I don't really think anyone ever is???

Shane,

I plan on moving the potted plants to shade. The ones in the garden will get a 4x soaking and hopefully the timers do their job. Scarey thing leaving them alone..

Yeah...especially when I am having such trouble getting the drip dialed in. Ughhh.

Dude, looking so forward to some Big Jim Rellenos!  ;) Do you use them green, or do you wait for them to ripen?  I have one just starting to ripen, and a number of green ones.
Once they're about full size I like them green or red. Either way they're delicious. I usually use green for Rellenos or as a sandwich/burger topping and red for sauces and Chile Con Queso.

Ok I’m having Shane wit & pictorial update withdrawals here hahaha … Hope you have a great weekend brethren!
Yeah Ramon...having a hard time keeping up. Had a ton of unexpected additional work piled upon my Unit this week, and we have a two week training exercise starting Monday to prep for...I snapped a few though.

Yea man, I wanna see you chomp on that Rennie!
I am still getting motivated...give me a moment! Kinda like jumping out of a perfectly good airplane...

Yes Sir! Mine are doing beautifully.
Glad to hear it...stay tuned and I will tell you how they taste...if I live through it!

So as mentioned above I am having a hard time getting things dialed in. So many more containers than last year. I have one more station I could hook up and may do just that to make sure I get this right. I also came home to a couple of sick ones. My Yellow Cardi Scorpion and Yellow 7 Pot are looking pretty rough. I don't think it's virus related, I believe it to be that they were water logged. I moved them, rinsed the roots and repotted. The rootballs looked healthy, but there was the unmistakable putrid waterlog stench. They were very soggy down low...I trimmed them back some and put them in the shade to be hand watered for a bit to see how they react. Other than that thinks are moving along...Pods, pods and more pods forming, and as time goes on, they're starting to take on their more true shapes and sizes.

Here are a couple pics...

This one scares the crap out of me...Trinidad Scorpion Moruga (Baker's Peppers)

A few of the small first pod Morugas are turning. I already had one tiny one ripen...these are a bit bigger, but still pretty small.

and some Pequins as well...

The 7 Pot White from Fernando is kicking some A too...I have a few that are getting pretty light. I have heard they never quite go all white, but I will leave them on until I am certain they're done cooking.

dufgXce.jpg

Here is yesterday's little pull. L-R...Some Goat's Weeds with the infamous Rennie below them snuggling up to a group of 6 Jamaican Scotch Bonnets from Greg and on the far right is a passle of Yellow Cardi Scorps, a few Poblanos for dinner tonight, a Blonde Cuke and some tomatoes...

Thanks for checking in...I'm doing my best to get caught up on y'all's stuff.
Shane

I hear ya on all the unexpected work, sucks but part of our lives I guess  … it’s sad to read about your Yellow Cardi Scorp and the Yellow 7 Pot looking bad but if anyone can bring them back it’s you and your first steps sound like you are on the right track. Lovely crisp photos Shane, that first one is total pro mon but I love all the pods pics too … Have a great day tomorrow!

Here is another go at the Jamaican Scotch Bonnets on a veggie "chicken" patty sandwich. Perfect flavor with great heat. They're not quite as hot as the Belize City Bonnets...which will be nice because I think I can make some stuff mama won't be too scared of with them. Don't get me wrong though...they're still HOT!

A couple of Tomatoes on the Red Zebra...gorgeous plant.

...and finally here is this guy:
kxrmw6b.jpg

7 Pot Rennie (Armac via KingDenniz...
The video kinda speaks for itself...Fruity and really sweet! The sweetest red super I have ever eaten. Slow building intense mouth burn followed by a scorching throat burn. 134 hiccups that seemed to last forever! The aftermath resulted in a pretty bad gut burn that set in an hour or so afterward. I ate a sandwich and had a glass of milk before hand...but I should have made another sandwich for right after too I suppose. All in all...great pod that will be outstanding for sauces with its natural sweetness. Thank you to Armac for putting them out there and Denniz for sending me a couple seeds. Looking forward to great things from this one! Got maybe 10 seeds out of this one which is a great sign from a first pod. There should be no shortage to share later on!

Have a great father's day everyone!
Shane
