Been pulling my hair out(well that's a lie...I have no hair) trying to figure out what has been destroying the leaves on the sunflowers I planted for my daughters. They are their favorites, and they were also the favorite of the young girl killed a few years ago here in Poway(she was actually murdered on a running trail in Rancho Bernardo) named Chelsea King. Both my girls went to school with her and her brother. So each year we put some in the ground to remember her. This year I have been having a real pest issue with them. Here is a pic of one of the leaves...
I looked all over the plants for critters...but came up dry with the exception of a few aphids. Well this morning as I was giving them the peppers their weekly dose of Alaska Fish Ferts I finally found the culprit!
You see it???
Not the greatest pic...but its a freaking finch! I sat and watched as droves of the little dudes came in and picked the leaves apart...never would have thought???
Here is the pic I promised of the Manzano root...I put this guy in a 7 gallon, the biggest pod I had, thinking it would last its first season. Never seen a surface root like that on a pepper, most of them look like hair. but on this dude it has these finger thick roots all the way around! A closer inspection found tons of roots poking through the drain holes as well. Already outgrowing its 7 gallon shoes! Debated putting it in the ground, but it is doing much better than the in ground plant I have, so I think I am going to get him a nice 25 gallon container.
7 Pot Primo...its flowering under there...all my container supers are developing this chia pet growth habit. Makes spraying for aphids ineffective. I found dozens of lady bugs today and many of them were striving to make dozens more when I saw them...so I think I am ready to let them try to handle it.
Here are some of them chillin by the pool this morning while I smoked up some more Manzanos. You can see the Manzano in the 7 gallon the 2nd one past the large green planter. The next 5 gallon is a Douglah, then sticking with the 5 gallons next is a devils tongue, up on the step we have a 7 Pot Monster Infinity followed by a Brain Strain...then past the Aloe in the orange pot and moving left we have a Yellow Bhut, Red 7 Pot, Wild Brazil, and a Trinidad Scorpion.
Pretty slow update weekend by my standards, but not because there isn't a ton going on in the garden. Got some mulching done and adjusted the drip system a bit. Also installed some more pre-fab wire fencing to deter the dogs from getting into the garden. They have destroyed the Dahlias I planted for my wife. They'll come back, but they were just about to bloom damn! Hopefully the new fence keeps them at bay.
Several varieties have been blooming like crazy for a month, and setting very few pods, but that is finally changing. The Goat's Weed, Wild Brazil, Pequins and Tepins are finally starting to set pods on most of their blooms. Fish pepper is loading up and photo worthy...just didn't get around to it.
While I didn't take a ton of pics this weekend I did make 6oz of Smoked Manzano powder from the pods I pictured earlier!
Here's the 2nd tray of Manzanos going in to the smoker...don't prefer the green ones, but once done the powder was still freaking wonderful!
I also made some of another favorite of mine which combines Pequins and Chile de Arbols....mmmmmmm!
Sorry for the blurry pic...on the left is Pequin/Arbol on the right is Smoked Manzano.
Got the last 5 trays of peppers (smoked Jalapenos) in the dehydrator for the night. Will powder them when I get back home on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Last but not least, I ate another Jamie Brain Strain...took a vid, and in spite of my daughter's boyfriends father's comments and some terrible back lighting it turned out pretty well! Uploading now will post in the morning.
May be without internet for a few weeks, so if you don't hear from me its due to the cables on my block being replaced. I will be able to update from work, but that is not the best either.
Sorry for the book, but I am bored...and coming down off a Brain Strain endorphin rush. Thanks for looking in!
