I am so sorry to see your sick babies. I know its hard to chuck them when they still have life. Only two looked bad to me like sicker than the others. I wish I had the answer for you. On the other hand those pods look great and the purple bhuts.... Gorgeous. enjoy enjoy enjoy  :fireball:

Hi Shane, you probably already saw this article, but thought I'd pass it along on the off chance you didn't. The nugget that caught my eye was at the end of the article... where they said uninfected crops could be somewhat protected by spraying with mineral oil of the appropriate type. Apparently Aphids are the usual carriers, and for an hour or so after feeding on an infected plant can carry a live virus on the outside of their probiscus, and introduce the virus into a new plant when they puncture it to feed. The mineral oil acts as a protective barrier and at least slows down the spread of the virus to healthy plants. They also confirm that aluminized mylar mulches slow down the spread of the virus by disorienting the aphids that carry it.

Cheers!

Man, I'm sorry to hear about your virus woes... If the virus is transmitted through seed, you might be searching for some new sources for next year? IF so, I'll hook you up with what I can... Just let me know.

Those two are going through transplant shock. I wasn't as careful with them as with the Mucho Nachos...Unfortunately the purple bhut is one of the sick ones.

Thanks for taking the time to look that up for me. I read that one a couple weeks ago and have been spraying with the recommended mineral oil/water mix with an aspirin crushed in it to help boost the plants immune system. They are due for another spaying tomorrow. There are no know cultivated species of peppers that are resistant to Mild Mottle Virus...with the exception of maybe Tepins. So it doesn't look good for the home team. I ripped out a Bhut this morning, so the saga continues.

Thanks, I very well may need new seeds. I sure hope not, at the rate its going they will all be infected within the next couple months unless I can finally head it off at the pass.

Me too Shane. I don't think it is though.
Thanks Jamie! Depends on whether its Mottle Virus (not seed borne) or Mild Mottle Virus (seed borne) I am leaning toward Mild Mottle Virus at this point which would mean not only infected seeds, but soil as well. So I will either have to build new beds, sterilize these, or go all container with all new soil.

Wow I didnt even notice that. ahahahaaa
Gotta be quick on the page toppers! Post #1000 is pretty cool to though! I also saw Denniz passed the winning post to you on Jamies site! Cool move on his part and some great luck for you! I wanted to post, but thought I would let someone else claim the prize, glad you got it!

So as I mentioned above I suspect Mild Mottle Virus and that the soil may be infected in my other raised beds so...
P1010764.jpg

I started a new project...nothing fancy.

P1010770.jpg

Soil is 3cf Compost, 3cf Peat Moss, 3 cf Garden Soil and...

P1010768.jpg

1 bucket of screened worm castings from my worm bins.

P1010765.jpg

There's a few of my full time gardeners!

P1010766.jpg

and a few more...I added a small bit of soaker to the worm bins a while back and their #'s have exploded. With tons of tiny new ones in there as well. Started off with a couple leftover red wiggler fishing worms and now have thousands of the little guys!

P1010771.jpg

Here's the bed almost done. Didn't have quite enough soil so I ran to HD and got 3 bags of topsoil, another 3cf of compost and 4cf MG Moisture control garden soil...Should have it finished and planted tomorrow.

P1010769.jpg

Haven't shown this pod before...this is on my plant that is supposed to be a Goccia D'Oro but the few pics I have found of them are elongated pods. So we'll have to see how this one develops.

So I mentioned planting...but what could I possible have to put in the ground at this point???
P1010774.jpg

My Nursery offers reward points that are only redeemable certain months of the year. June is one of them, So I was off to spend them! Some Sugar Baby Watermellons, Marigolds and Cosmos as companion plants, some portulaca because momma likes it and...

P1010773.jpg

a sixer of Mucho Nachos since my other ones have a cold...and

P1010772.jpg

an AMAZING looking Pequin considering how the rest of their peppers looked! My Pequins aren't true (although I am still real excited about them) so super stoked I found this one!

Thanks for your concern everyone. I'm gonna keep on keepin on...and if they all end up sick, so be it. Will mean less pods and no seeds, but shouldn't be fatal to them all. Some may not even show symptoms according to some of what I have read. For all you folks that PM'd me about the Superman Powder...I don't have any to share just yet, but once I get some of my supers to shift colors I'll make a big batch and send some to a few folks! Its pretty damn good I'm not gonna lie!

Gonna try to catch up on some of your glogs now!
Shane

Not too gnarly...but don't think I've showed these either. Paper Lantern Habs.

Finally got the new garden finished and planted...
P1010787.jpg

Peppers in here are 6 Mucho Nachos and 1 Pequin center stage. Surrounded by some companion Cosmos and Marigolds.

And finally another week on the tea has these guys booming!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Shane, My man! Here is my reasoning, you update more than anyone I know, and I only had a few minutes every other day to scan the forums while I was fighting the war. I figured, wait until I get home, and then I can read up on everything I missed. I was definitely right, you have such a great log. Amazing updates and enough to keep you attached for a while!

Sorry to hear about the continued battle with nasties. But from the looks of it, you aren't hurting TOO bad. That Purple Bhut is freaking amazing, it is COVERED in purple! That is definitely one for next time around. Also, those primos are gnarly! I have my first babies popping up right now, so hopefully they turn out crazy looking like yours. It is such a crazy looking pod.

I hope you can get all the issues under control, but if you can continue to put out the awesome pods and use that fancy new smoker, you are gonna be SET! I am hoping to get me enough good powders to sprinkle on EVERY meal while I am overseas. If I can pull the harvests you are getting I will be set.

Hopefully next time I am in Cali, I won't be in hell and we can grab a brew. Keep up the great grow.

I don't really update a lot...only once a week, but 6 more of my multiple personalities update once a week also.

I think this virus is gonna hit them all eventually, but oh well. It should only slow them down and not kill them. That'll end up saving me some freezer space in the end!

Never been out to Ft Irwin, but in that area...and your right it is hell on earth. Almost like you are on a different planet out there. Looking forward to that beer when you head back this way or I get out to NC.

Take care brother!
Shane

Shane... playing catch up with all of the Grow Logs.... Everything looks fantastic...
I put a pound of those red wrigglers in my beds and in the compost pile this year. They do seem to be prolific breeders.

Hope to catch up with you soon.

Regards, Chris

Haven't updated in a few days...so here goes a small one. Finally got a couple supers to ripen...both off the Infinity plant. Problem is they came out yellow, so I suspect a cross or just unstable. Either way still a rockstar of a plant, and I like the yellow flavors better anyway! Others are starting to show signs of shifting colors so it won't be too long. The drip system is just about dialed in, and has kicked them back into grow mode. Was surprised to see how fast my containers were drying out. I now have them getting a small drink every six hours. "Nuff of the typing part here goes a couple pics!

P1010809.jpg

The Infinity pod...Very thick flesh, small amount of placenta and seed count of 0! Very strong chinense aroma and a thick coat of oil inside. I ate it straight up and while it wasn't s Brain or Barrackpore it was the HOTTEST yellow pod I've had. Hotter than Jamies Yellow 7's, Cardi Scorp or Fernando's Yellow Bhut. Great sweet chinense flavor out of the gate, but before I was done chewing my mouth was on freaking fire. In spite of eating it right after a meal, this little dude was the first yellow to give me some stomach issues.

Just in case that one wasn't enough...
P1010811.jpg

I got another one on standby! These are going to be a real good contender to add to the Superman powder. Both of these pods are a little different than most of the pods on the plant. They were a couple of the first to set, and are smallish and smoother skinned than most of them. Pod shape and size if very inconsistent on this plant as well.

P1010810.jpg

Here's the harvest shot from yesterday. The heat has my Poblanos ripening a little smaller than before, but they're finally setting a few new ones. Other pods in the photo are 2 Jamaican Hot Yellows, a handful of my not Fish peppers above the cherry tomatoes, and some immature Aji Omnicolors off a plant I had to cut back a bit. Not pictured are the two Infinity pods...

Prodigal asked for some critter pics so here are a few from the Butterfly Bush...

She deposited eggs on what seemed like every leaf, and didn't care at all that I was so close. Butterfly Bushes (milk weed) are the only plants Monarchs will lay eggs on or eat as larvae! You can tell this is a female not only because she was laying her eggs, but because the banding in her wings is thicker than that of the males. Here are some articles with some Monarch facts...

Thanks for checking in folks...Happy 4th! Give a thought and a prayer to all those Soldiers and Sailors far from home and BBQ today.
Shane

Nice pics! I'm growing several Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) plants, but have yet to see a Monarch here. We get a lot of Swallowtails though.

Did you grow that squash, and what kind is it? My squash and pumpkin plants are only about 6 inches tall. This part of summer is the hardest for me - weeding, watering, and WAITING!

Happy 4th to you and congrats on your first home grown super. This is my favorite pic. The primo is gonna hurt you bad!
Yup...I can tell by looking at them that they'll be painful...as will the BARRACKPORE that is already setting friggen fruit! Too small for any good pics, but they won't be denied for too much longer!

The milkweeds are fun...my daughter wanted it last year because it was covered in caterpillars...as it will be again shortly! Great thing about Socal is you get all kinds of butterflies and Humming Birds. Those squash are pumpkins with a squash name. They're Queensland Blues, I have yet to cook one, but I think I may make a soup later today. Supposedly similar in texture and flavor to Butternut and the two can be substituted in many recipes. I may get 1 or two more off the plant before they're done for the summer. Maybe I'll plant another round in late August for a fall crop.

BTW I will save some seeds out of them if you would like to try them out!

I haven't grown the Queensland Blue before. It's pushing the envelope a bit as far as the days to maturity, but you never know, it might ripen in time if we have a late frost that year. I'd love some seeds for it later in the season, maybe along with some of that Smoked Manzano powder, hint, hint.

What Smoked Manzano Powder???

I agree with Jamie on that Primo shot. Once that thing starts changing colors it is gonna be a contender for the gnarliest pod of the year. Hmmmm....that is getting me thinking.....

Anyways, that is crazy about your Infinty... I'll send you some seeds out of mine so you can give em a shot next season. Mine look wrinkly and 7pot-ish, haven't turned, but starting to get a tint of red. What is the source? I got mine from Wouter (Mido/peppersRus.com) and they are turning out like his are. But at least it has a killer taste to it!
