Nice update shane. I haven't been keeping up with glogs a whole bunch lately. A question or three for you. This virus came from seed?
I see that it is affecting potted and inground plants... How do you think it spread from ground to pot? Leaves touching, pests, or do you think the infected plants all came from infected seeds? How are you going to treat the ground? Good luck with your training! I will try to stay current in the future.
It probably came from some seeds I purchased, but not sure. It could have been in the ground here. We have wild nightshade that grows everywhere here so that is another possibility. It spreads either through pest, seed, soil or mechanical. I was pretty careful and had the pests under control at that point so it took longer to reach my container plants. In the beginning it was isolated to a few plants in one area and I failed to recognize it as disease. I was thinking that area was deficient in something, so I didn't react as quickly as I should have or it could have been stopped right there. The eventual spread to containers was probably a lapse in my prevention routine. By that point I had moved all my containers closer together but farther away from the infected area of the yard. It hit them all like dominoes...and eventually I gave up even trying to contain it...If the soil sterilization works in my test setup I may go larger scale with the ground soil using the same method. Dig down a couple feet and cook it in a makeshift greenhouse kiln (ton of work there)??? I am growing in container only next season, but will have to hunt down and stomp out any volunteer plants that spring up to avoid a repeat performance.

Sorry for the book...
Shane

That sucks about the virus. I probably missed it, but do you know which virus? Doesn't seem to have hampered production. Good luck with the kiln.

Doc,
It is Pepper Mild Mottle Virus (PMMoV) and has cut my production by at least a third...which isn't such a bad thing for me since I ran out of space early. I have swept up buckets of pods that dropped and thrown away many more that rotted on the plant. The biggest suck factor is not being able to share or save seeds from any of them. I had several interesting unexpected crosses I would have liked to have grown out. There are methods of sterilizing the seeds, but not sure its worth the risk since no method is 100% effective. I saved some seeds from the crosses I want to try again and may start them late enough in the season that if the virus comes back it won't hurt my grow too much. If so, I will also put those plants in the front yard far enough away and down wind from the others so that any pests won't likely make the commute. Going to be hard enough to keep them clean with volunteers that are sure to spring up. I will be growing far fewer plants as well, so I can space them out further. If one comes down with it I will be much more likely to be able to contain it. We'll see!

I have had a bumper crop for sure...no real complaints other than no seeds to share.
Shane

Holy smoke that is an amazing update per usual brother. Just can't believe how great your season has been even with the virus. I would be scared to see how much powder you would have made if it were not for that. Thanks for sharing the sweet shots of your workout too!!!

BE SAFE :fireball:

Thanks fellas...just got word I may not be stateside most of next season...only time will tell. If not I may start 3x as many just to drive momma crazy when I leave. Back in a spot without Internet for a bit, so I've been banished to my phone. Will still check in when I can, but won't be as frequent on y'all's glogs.

Understood... Good luck and may God bless... I've got a nephew who's shipping out fairly soon too.

Wherever you end up, stay safe.

I guess that means we can sabotage your glog if we want and it'll take you longer to catch us ;)

We shall see on the deployment??? Tell your nephew to be safe and take in as much as he can (besides the booze) everywhere they land.

Thanks Andy...hopefully right here at home.

Not sure it'll need sabotage??? I think next year will be a much abbreviated glog. Not so much that's new and different so less pics and posts. Plus less plants...so more than likely only 72ish pages next season!

Your harvests have been huge by any standard, even with the virus hampering productivity. If you ship out, stay safe.
Thanks Doc! I had some kickass plants in spite of me and the virus! I call it good seeds. I give much of the credit to my final soil choice too. Although people love to hate MG...the stuff works. I am going to be leaning further toward home-made but its a slow process getting the proportions just right.

No garden update...all I can mention is I tried the Barrackpore powder I made. I put a tip of a teaspoon into my chili and rice and got lit up! Wow, hottest stuff by far I have made. So hot I had to get another bowl of chili and use that one to season it. Two spoonfuls of the spiced up chili mixed with the new bowl had sweat pouring off my head. :flamethrower: :fire: :fireball: :fire:

The garden has been neglected and is full of ripe pods...just ain't got the time. Hopefully I can get some pod shots up next weekend.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Shane

Shit Shane.....the amount of life you pack into your life is impressive. I always love coming to your glog when I'm feeling down so I can get a look at the good life...it gives me something to shoot for....now where's my gun..I kid I kid! I had a little lot of catching up to do. Wowza, your sick plants make my "healthy" ones look like Jerry's kids. I have a few sick ones myself, it's no fun. Either way, you're ahead of the game buddy. Those Primos and Brakappores are wicked. It's like the 4th of July in pod form! I've got one of dem der wild Brazils too. She's a biggun' but looks great in a bikini umm hmm. Bitch to harvest but its quite a unique flavor profile. I envy your runs man, that scenery can't be beat. I live in the flats...and a boring cookie cutter town. It's a drag to run in because its not inspiring. I feel like I'm in a hamster wheel! Mabye ill find my way out that way someday and we will take a run....lets keep it at a 5k though....I wouldn't want to make a scene dying or anything. Good luck to your boy with the rest of the season and god bless you and the fam. Ttyl bruha

I been awol for a bit so its time to catch up on things.
Shane, both yours and Pauls updates are always worth the read, but it does take time to get through because of all the interesting info from you and the replies by others...
I hope things are well for you bro, as you know family comes 1st and the garden (families) 2nd, so be sure to take care of yourself...no matter what.
That sux about the plant mottling ...the soil may not be the issue.
Theres nothing like a good hard frost for the ground and some well aged compost for the containers once the planting happens.
I look forward to reading your updates for next season......stay safe

Greg

Man Shane, I'm out for a bit and you've gone all the way from Mexico to Australia, now that's a run! Hoping that your able to kill off what ever it was that was killing your plants. it sucks, My sick ones are still alive and I'm thinking about pulling them out of the nursary pots they're in, washing the roots in some plain clean water, maybe adding some peroxide, and moving them to some root pouches with new soil. I'm hoping that it'll get them going again.

That's a really nice collection of seeds and powders you have there and yeah, Jamies powder got me real good on the first try. have a great week Bro,
Bill

Hope it works out that you can stay home bro!! Hope the sterilization works out on the soil! Continued success my friend.

E

P.S. Those smoked 7,and brain powder you sent me were pretty damn hot!!! So that barrackpore must be Super-Hot!

Hey, Shane! You are still getting some nice pods from those plants, bro!
Must be your good kharma. As you pull up the dead and dying, you will
probably feel a load lifting from your shoulders. One all the sickies are gone,
your grow will look pristine again! Let the survivors hang on as long as they
can!! Every pod a victory!

I have enjoyed your grow season immensely, Shane. From the Christmas
lights under the plastic to the herculean efforts you put forth battling bugs
and diseases, it has been entertaining and enlightening. I truly hope you
will be here for next season, my friend, but if not I hope your tour is boring
and uneventful. We'll be here waiting either way, buddy!

Congrats on a great grow, I'll be waiting to see your new startup!

Sorry to hear you will be gone Shane I was excited to see another glog page race. Your season has been amazing brother especially with all the projects you shared with us. Hopefully everything works out for you and can not wait to see your season start again.

Just popped in to say 'hi'.
Hope all is well in Shaneville!

May or may not be gone...leaning toward the "not" side. Have ton's of ripe pods and no time for the picking. Spent the whole day on the trails moving water 2 gallons at a time over 5 miles of rough terrain to a remote aid station location and maintaining the trails. A couple pics of that...

Here is the group shot at Chiquita Falls...

Sorry no pepper pics today, got a killer care package this week from Paul, will post a pic in a bit.

You'll have to forgive me, but being October and all, and with my mind more into zombie stuff than normal, which is quite a bit anyway, all I could think with that pic is, "wow, great survival crew for the zombie apocalypse." I mean, a group of in shape, prepared people with random weapons... is that a machete? You guys would survive.

Yes it was a machete, there were a couple between us along with a grubbing ax, a hatchet, two bow saw, some loppers and rakes. We were ready for battle for sure.

Here is the care package from Paul...I replaced the labels where I could, but I still don't know for sure what the long orange pod is???

Another BA weekend that had me too busy to harvest. I have more than I need frozen, but I should really pull some pods. I have a ton of Aji Amarillo, 7's, Brains, Jamaican Hot Yellows, Red Lantern Habs and Manzanos to pull for starters. Many more, but listing them all isn't what you all want. Pod shots for sure next weekend!!! Less than a month remaining before my 100 miler. Anybody wanna pace me the last 20 miles or so??? By that point I'll only be moving about the speed of smell.

Hope your weekends were as fun filled as mine!
Shane
