StettoGro 4: Spredner Tin 2020

Welcome to another chapter in the great series of the Stettomans comedic gardening adventures! Come along, follow the antics of a guy makin' it up as he goes, having some luck, some not-so-much, and more than his share of whining about a fleepin' 3 month growing season! No telling what we'll see, Stetto's grows is always full of surprises and absurdities....

I almost named the thread the He should Know Better Grow, but I do and I'm going to go through with it anyway....

No list yet, but I put these Rocoto Amarillo to plug today to get a head start--I've decided to give them a full row in the half of an 8th acre, which I didn't plant at all last season. It was that bad up here...No corn, no beans, no lettuce, NO TUBERS, fercryinoutloud! All my peppers & tomatoes were container grown...

Trying a different route for germinating, at least for the firsters. I'll likely go back to trays with the Anuums and such...

By the time I got the cuplettes ready I found I needed to add three more. Dunno if this was a good idear, but I used a pinch of water soluble Mykos to soak the plugs...

That's all I got for todays episode, besides the Growdown Fatalii, which is doing quite well and the mystery XL Brown, which is purple and likely akin to PaulG's neat little PdN cross...

If I don't post a grow list of some kind by the end of the weekend, send someone to check on me, yeh?

I appreciate y'alls interest, don't make me regret it....

Except for a few more straggling hooks, and a few specimens I may pick up from the local nursery, this rightcheer is my pepper production for the year, approx 70 plants. I am officially out of space for more...

Phase II begins...how many can possibly survive that?
Pretty impressive, Eric!

Good luck getting every one of those
out for plant-out this season!

Thanks Paul, It's become a reason to get outta bed in the morning lately. REAL danger of mother-henning, but I did plant too many.

BTW, another Aji Limarillo popped, a third is peeking. We'll keep the fingers crossed, eh?

I think ya oughta open up the full “Eighth Acre “ it’s gonna be be a good year, I feel it in my bones. [emoji16][emoji106]

Good year or no, Bryan, I just don't have it in me to till that much muck up this time around. Not to worry, the peppers won't be hurting for space, though there won't be sugar pumpkins or zuchs ...

If I don't kill them beforehand, I plan some tight rows of Big Jims, Aji Oros, Rocoto Amarillo, and Aji Limos, with room for Aleppo, Haskorea, Antep Aci Dolma, Jimmy Nardello and the Bride's Bells. There will again be a number of container grows, including an Aji Amarillo in a fat 20 gallon fabric pot. There are a few surviving OWs, but they don't look robust. There has been no joy on either the Urfa Biber or the Antake, but they may have seen the future and opted out. I still have a number of seeds in germ trays, so who knows...

Regarding tilling, I just planted this year relying on the fall broadfork work.

Sounded good at the time  Actually the soil was soft down to 10"s or so. :shh:

I've been waiting for you to come up and broadfork my 8th acre, Scott! You could choose between digging wet or dry, there are cons to both and little in between...ok, nothing in between.

My tiller is a 13 year old Cub RT65 with a 190cc Honda OHV. It runs like the day I bought it. Will take an arm off'n you if you let it, couldn't do without it in this ooze. After break-in it got a Mobil1 oil change every year, which should be happening today...Unless you get up here with that fork of yours first...

Hey, you're retired...DAYTRIP IN THE HELLCAT!!!  :onfire:

Yeah, I did. Monaville and Luling. If I promise the Darlin' Bride a few days in Port A she says she doesn't care where I go...I will alert you. I also want to spend a few days on a pig hunt southeast of Abilene. That'll be last, gotta keep the pork fresh!

More than just my post dist-a-peared, I remember you sayin' no the day trip, then hell yeah to meetin' up in your hood...

GPR, you and Paul can meet us at the Luling City Market...

No hard freezes apparent for the immediate future, nonetheless these guys will bivouac in the garage for a few nights.

The OWS, as rats-ass as they are, are coming out too, but at the other side of the house. This is no time for the aphids to find fresh meat....

Nice bags full o' fun, Eric! Peppers are
looking good, tomatoes, too!

Are you going to plant out in the bags,
or try to remove them?

Thanks Paul, I'm hoping this will be a good early spring. I'm usually not hardening for a while yet. And yeah, I'm planning to plant bags & all. One of the tomatoes has already rooted through, and before they were discontinued the Amazon page said they can be planted. CaneDog might be able to enlighten us...

Congrats on day one in the sun ;)
Thanks Scott, and it feels great! I started getting active around the house last week, chain sawing and brush hauling and tilling...starting to feel earthly again.

I cut all mine out just to remove any doubt, but don't have any reason to believe the roots won't grow through them just fine - this is my first time trying them.  I saw plenty of roots growing out through the bottoms and sides bags just fine when they had access to moisture.  Then again, I have seen instances of jiffy puck netting strangling roots. I figured problems aren't likely, but the bags can't be an issue if they're not there.

Discontinued on Amazon, huh?

Glad you can overnight your babies in the garage [emoji106]. That looks like a lot of in and out trips otherwise [emoji16]

36° this morning, I may be making in and out trips for a few weeks. Forecast was for 40s this morning, I got no faith in these weather guessers...but yeah, that garage door is just 25 feet away!

Yeah 'Dog, it was right after I received the bags I ordered. I went back to the page for info (absolutely NONE in the package) and it was marked "no longer available". No doubt someone still carries them, just not Amazon.
