WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

A few links to some of my better posts ;)Did you say powder?Did you say MoA?Black light night shots & horn wormsReviews and taste impressions in no order

That is awesome corking on the jalapenos!
Dem Jalapeños say tank you mon! ;)

Have you tried any of them yet?
Yes, a few times now but the plants are small so I only get 4 to 5 per harvest as I showed back on post #39. There is a link there to a wonderful tomato salad from the Philippines I highly recommend. I also mix them with hotter JA peppers to make the Spanish Garbanzo dip I posted at the bottom of post #170 which gives it a very distinctive flavor.

Rrrhh! looking good bredren!
Thanks for dem kind words Steve! I see dat you’re kicking some serious azz with dem Jamaican Scotch Bonnet MOA’s, they really look great … once dem pod mon, save me one or two brah :)

Ramon...Awsome winter pod porn brotha! FYI, last year I started them all under lights, but I was only using T8s. I moved some out into a makeshift greenhouse. Once I added CFLs to my indoor starts they grew much faster than the ones outside. The constant 75-80 degree temps and 12hr light cycle beat ma-nature until around mid May here. Then Mr. Sun was the way to go. Hope you get some of the ones you're missing to pop soon!

A mi fi tell yu! big tings a comin! Absolutley, I will personally hand them to you! likkle muore
Thank you Steve!!! I am looking forward to trying another one of your pods and also to trying to get together again, talking peppers, shooting pics and seeing your grow ... possibly tip a coconut or two, hehe

Shane you're beating mother nature and winning mon, that's not fair ;) On my end our plants are grown outside year round, although I have been bringing in the egg carton on cold nights. Hope they all spring up but read below, another one has cometh ^_^

Those pod shots look great, Ramon! Keep it up in the Florida sunshine. Those oranges they advertise have nothing on your pods! ;)
As always, thanks for the kind words of encouragement Brent & back at ya, you have a killer grow going, as all others that have posted here on my glog and even some who haven't ;) :D

Walkgood.... you are livin the life brotha! Dem likkle seedlins will be a sproutin mon. No worries mon, everyting irie!
Jamison, Wow you pegged it mon! Another one breaks bad ground dis morning \o/ (read update below)

Today was the day in my mind that I was going to crack open the eggs I had planted back on January 1 that had not sprouted to check out the condition of the seeds and hopefully learn something from any of my mistakes. I popped open the egg holder crate and to my surprise #1 is hooking (picture below) :) #1 is the Yellow Bonnet Jamaican, wow after 27 days! Now I have reevaluated opening up the rest and will allow the eggs to continue, just to see what happens. Fortunately I live in FL and have great weather for growing peppers but unfortunately at this rate it could be weeks/months before more hatch ;)

Thanks Greg, it's your Yellow Bonnet Jamaican on my list below (#1) :)

Updated list (as stated in a previous post the updated list here will also be updated on 1[sup]st[/sup] post but none of the others).

While this is not a recipe below, it does represent a typically quick/easy to make Cuban dinner. Left over black beans, left over rice, mix & heat to make congri, you can easily add pepper or other condiments as we do before mixing. Plantains from the garden double fried to make tostones, if you don’t know what they are click here and grilled chicken breast topped with sofrito starter. This whole thing can be made in less than 30 minutes if you have the leftovers and plantains. Side note, you can make tostones larger and they go great with all kinds of toppings, hot sauce, meat, chicken, peppers, etc., etc. …

I plan on making a harvest of a few Jalapeños and Jamaican Habs later today as I have to do some work first on a floating dock we aquired over the weekend (pics for another day). Wasn’t planning on taking pictures of them, well maybe the Jalapeños but if anyone wants I can also take pictures of the JA Habs. Was just outside again and noted my first Serrano pepper pod already formed, I will take a pic of that \o/ … Oh what the hell, I’ll run out shoot and edit this post, give me a few minutes.

Here's the sucker:

Damnit Ramon, every time I start reading your growlog I get hungry and wander off to try to find food. I keep meaning to say keep up the good work and stop teasing us. The egg thing is great also.

Carson I felt the same when I saw your home made pizza, I’ll try to post less food if you do the same ;)

BTW I got tied up working on the floating dock today and did not get to picking pods. I'd like to have it ready for next weekend to put canoe on it and sit out by the river tipping a few coconuts :) By days end I did pick 4 red Jalapeños to make another dip but was in such a rush I didn't take more pics today :/

Edit: I was about to bring the eggs inside and noticed a second White Bhut Jolokia is now hooking, sorry no pics but I’ll shoot one tomorrow.

Now I'm jealous, plantains right from the garden, lucky you. They are great twice fried...
I'm glad to see one of the Jamaican's sprouting. Even with an overnight soak mine still took 17 to 21 days. The seeds were from June so they are fresh. Maybe it helped that I play "Wailer" music in the grow room.........steel drum mon ?

Ok, growing in an egg shell, now that's cool. I'll have to take a trip back through your glog and check it out. Nice to see your hooking

That chow is looking pretty good but still not Cervesa or Num Rum? Come on Brah, and don't forget the lime ;)

Have a great week Ramon,
Bill

Very fine looking food, Ramon! I especially love the dish being fried in the pan. I can almost hear it sizzling from here ^_^
I think most people love the taste of tostones when they try them, you should give them a go or see if there are any Latin restaurants around you, most sell them. We also make maduros and for the life of me I can’t figure out why I didn’t take a picture of them as well, was probably thinking with my stomach, lol. The maduros look very interesting because we cut them the length of the plantain but often they are very sweat in comparison.

Greg my offer still stands, remember my post in Jamie’s glog here, seeing how you drink rum, like plantains and play “Wailer” music you will fit right in :) Regarding the plantains, it’s possible that you missed the 3rd picture in my post here (page 2 of glog). While I now only have a few trees because we removed like 25, they keep us supplied. In the past we had so many it was hard to give them all away. Thanks for the seeds again, I am letting them stay in the eggs now as yesterday another White Bhut Jolokia came up or so I believe. I have a question about that below, hopefully you can help identify … Thanks for checking mi glog mon, it’s always great to read your comments ^_^

Bill, thanks for stopping in & checking … I’m not 100% sure but I believe my egg method is slow this time of year because of the low temps we’ve had, normally I do it in summer when it’s hot all da time. This is the first time I’ve ever tried starting stuff in our winter, even with other plants around the yard I do all germination in summer, but you guys got me all amp’ed out to start ^_^ I guess eggs would work well in one of those heat pad thingies and the beauty is you’re starting them out with calcium as I crack up the egg into tiny bits and plant it too. As far as cervesa or rum, it doesn’t last long around my house, no constant stash. If we buy it, it’s drank within the first day or two :D Too bad we can’t grow Añejo rum. Well that’s probably a good thing or I’d be drunk all the time :D Thanks for noting our food, its real good …

More peppper pics and less food pics. I am fat enough already ;)
lol, back at ya … you show off some mighty great food as well brethren. I’d think tostones would be a staple around your shack too ^_^

Ok, now for one picture and serious question to all you pros here on THP. I am 100% sure that I did not mix up any seeds and the packets they were in were clearly marked, I did one egg at a time very meticulously so this is not the issue. Look at the picture below and let me know if both of these seedlings are White Bhut Jolokia? I ask this because the leaves look completely different to me and I’ve never grown a White Bhut Jolokia. I can identify all my plants without tags, this is why I was so careful in tagging each new seed planted. The only thought I have is that the seedling to the right is a weed from my compost :/

List updated both here and first post, added percentages and not looking great but I'm happy that some have sprouted. Now that I've noted many being very late, I'm not going to crack open the eggs to check seeds for a long time, lol.

ROFLMAO, I tried to post this reply and received a msg that says "You have posted a message with more emoticons than this community allows. Please reduce the number of emoticons you've added to the message," so if I deleted your emoticon don't get pissed, lol. I first changed my smiles to ^_^

Lunch today ... French bread, mustard, ham, chicken, salami, cheese & peppers, I ran out of sofrito starter :( Once sandwich is made, off to da machine and lunch is ready ^_^

I like to have eggs for breakfast once or twice a week and i rinse, dry, crush and save my shells. Then before I mix up my soil i'll run them through the Ninja till they're pulverised and then add it to the soil. Either way they're getting the cal, that's for sure.

Yea, I do that too … great minds think alike ^_^

Very nice sanwich, panini style! Are those home made chips with it?
Thanks and panini sandwiches are great tasting all warm inside. No I did not make the chips, they were store bought but do make them occasionally.

Ramon, The seedling on the right is not from a pepper seed
I did not think so but wanted a pro’s opinion as well, so what you say kill it or transplant it and see what comes ;)

Nice sammy
Thanks and toasty tasty too ^_^

Looking nice.
Thank you!
