What do you consider healthy or normal amount of booze to consume?

He may be your best friend lostmind and it's obvious that you treat him that way. I don't believe you are his best friend though his comes in 12 ounce cans.

When a person is addicted to something they will surrender everything they know and love to get it. They have to hit rock bottom before they realize how strong of a hold their demon has on them. By putting up with his habit you are telling him that it's OK.

One last thing, you can force a person to go through rehab but they have to be willing for it to stand a chance. My only brother had a severe addiction to alcohol and drugs and for years my family and the courts put him through rehab. He never went willingly. We lost him a few years ago. I miss him every day.

I wish you and your friend the best of luck.

Sorry to hear about your brother Patrick, thats very very sad.

I wanted to comment to lostmind last night however my sisters connection was playing up. I was going to say pretty much what you just said, that without the person wanting to help themselves you may as well bang your head against a brick wall it just doesn't work.

I hope your friend can get sorted lost, sounds pretty entrenched in his addiction though.

I was drinking way too much for a while. For a couple years it was at minimum a 750 of Jack every day. When I moved to Prague that changed to a few shots of various things a day along with at least 10 .5L Pilsner Urquells. I moved to Arizona from there and it was a twelve pack or more of beer and some shots. That continued during my short time in Berkeley, CA. There it was typically Double IPA's from Triple Rock Brewery. From there I lived in Vegas for a little bit and just drank loads of everything, 15 drinks a day upwards of 35 or so, kinda lost track most of the time.

I moved to Florida a little over a year ago and was at around 12 beers a day and occasional shots at the bar. In the last 7 months though I've cut down drastically. I'd say I have on average 12 beers a week during last 3 months. I consume painkillers probably a little too much now, but I feel much better than when I was plastered 24 hours a day. That's slowly getting reduced as well.

Amongst all that drinking there were psychadelics consumed maybe 5 times a year, occasional hard drugs, and daily pot smoking. The greenery will continue on for the forseeable future. Maybe I'll get tired of it some day but I doubt it. Now though I'm not stoned all day but I'll take at least a couple hits while I'm chilling on the computer and sipping 1 or 2 quality beers.

In case you can't tell, I like to party. Since I started the great job I have now in February I've been making great strides towards a happy medium of moderation of all things with the once in a while serious party night. I need to cut down some on the painkillers now and then I'll be there.

Thanks Nova. It gets easier with time.

Thanatopsis, not judging you bro but it sounds like you replaced the alcohol with prescription drugs. Hitting the bowl, couple beers, and a vicodin every four or five hours a person doesn't need to drink as much. I wish you the best man.

It depends if I have to work. I average around 4-8 beers a day, 10 if I'm really having fun. I generally try to start or have a pint before noon.

igg is an alcoholic and needs help.

There has been a new study put out that says binge drinking a few nights a week(3-4) is better for you than not drinking at all.

If that's the case i'm the healthiest S.O.B. in the world. Seriously though - I really need to cut down. At least 4 nights a week I drink a minimum of 6 pints of beer, a bottle of red wine and half a bottle of scotch. And then there's "herbal remedies" as well. It's no good but it FEELS so good.

Please show me this new study. I'm having an extremely hard time believing this.

I've been doing research into alcohol for the last 26 years and I've graduated with a Masters Degree in whiskyology.

well being scottish booze is in the blood!!! but i never count how many i'm having also i don't tend to get falling over drunk (I do but only on special occasions!!!) and i'd never drink and drive that is a complete no brainer, my outlook on anything is by all means use but never abuse, it has served me well for many years

I definitely did replace it. It's not the best thing technically, but my body feels much better. I realize it's still not the healthiest thing but I'm sure my liver appreciates it since I don't take painkillers like Percocet and Vicodin that contain acetaminophen and if I do I extract the oxy/hydrocodone and throw out the other crap.

I did the same sort of thing Thanatopsis...I gave up :high: cold turkey about 8 years ago and thought I was fine then realised that I was going through a 6 pack of beer and more than a 750 bottle of Jim Beam Black every night.

It wasn't till a mate came round one day and counted 34 empty whiskey bottles on the sink that I alone had comsumed in a little under a 3 week period that I was made to realise I had substituted one problem for another..... I took steps to stop it and managed to get the drinking under control again.

Oh man Moyboy that sounds a lot like i was.......swapping one "crutch" for another. For me all you'd have to do is substitute the whiskey for vodka and gin and my friends would say thats exactly what i was like, quantity-wise.
