Yeah Jiffy works well for me, though these last lot I got are a wee bit skinny for my liking
Yeah, not happy with Bunnings for discontinuing the Mr Fothergill ones (IMO, the good ones!) and stocking the actual Jiffy brand ones now!

They do stock two sizes but one is too small and the other is too big!

Buuuut.... check this out:

I believe if you order three boxes, postage is free! :D

A few early starters I see. I'll be getting some seeds down this weekend or next and will keep fingers crossed for a better season than last. I'll be putting in some raised beds this year incase we have another wet Summer. All the best to everyone.

Raised beds sound like a plan!

Hopefully, if all goes to plan, I'll be putting in a couple of my own. :D

Looking good there. If you have no luck with the NuMex Twilight and Omnicolour let me know and I will see if I have any spare. I know I only have a small amount but not sure how many (will have to sort through all the packets I have everywhere!).
Just saw this now!

I still have a fair few seeds left of NuMex Twilight and Omnicolor so I will sow some more and see what happens first. But thanks for the offer, Candice! :)

And as it is very early in the season too, I'm in no great hurry to get them going right now - while I do plan to grow NuMex Twilight for myself, these two are actually for my Aunty and thought I would try and get them growing and established early.

No probs. That's nice of you to grow them for her.

I potted up a few of the leftovers yesterday and am doing an experiment. They were in jiffy pellets. I decided to plant 2 with the netting on and 2 with the netting off just to see if there will be much difference in how they grow as i saw in another thread people saying that they take the netting off because the roots don't grow through properly. (although has worked fine for me in the past).
So will be interesting to see. I'm also trying a new potting mix that sounds good.Amgrow Organix Potting Mix. It is an all natural potting mix with Zeolite, Bioactive Compost,Organic extra slow fertiliser (from manure etc. not chemicals) and Coir.

I also dropped a heap of seeds off at a nursery that is growing for me. They will be used to plant at the farm again for fresh fruit and hopefully will have enough leftover this season to dry so I can stop importing Bhut from India. Also they will be growing seedlings for me to sell as I am running out of room and won't have enough time to look after them and germinate them at that time. They will be started the end of next month.

While I always remove the netting, on the occasions when I don't pot-up perhaps as early as I should, it does appear that the roots do grow through just fine! ;)

However, as I stated before, I use the Mr Fothergill jiffy pellets so I don't know the case with the actual Jiffy brand ones - the netting does appear to be different. While I have never actually used the Jiffy brand ones, to me, it does look like the netting may indeed be a little "tougher" - but I can't say for sure.

Let me know how the Amgrow Organix mix goes! The first time I grew, I experimented with a "ready-to-go" potting mix but found it really didn't live up to what it claimed ("Excellent water retention" - YES! Absolutely no denying that! But "essential drainage qualities"!?), and as a result, was really turned off those kinds of mixes. However, it would be nice though to have a back-up on those occasions when time just isn't on your side and you need some potting mix quick!

This coming season I will actually be using a whole pile of used potting mix that I have saved from last season and will be building it up with composted manure, coir, etc. Hopefully once it is built up I will have enough to use for most of my plants, but I dare say, it still won't be enough for all them!

I have used the Fothergills ones also with no probs, I didn't think the netting seemed to different with the Jiffy brand ones. The roots were actually starting to come out of the netting but due to me not having anything around them (I usually sit them in Perlite so that when the roots come out they don't get shocked or air pruned)they have been air pruned.

Yeah I try to avoid those ones that say excellent water retention - exactly for that reason that I think they wont drain too well! :) I don't usually use bags of potting mix due to the large quantity I grow. I usually get a trailer load of soil at a time but when I only have a few to pot up like now then I will go buy a bag. Will upload pics later and we can keep an eye on how they go.

Well, there you go.... I had never actually heard of "air pruning" and had to go google it!

But from what I have briefly read, it doesn't sound like air pruning is such a bad thing if it is done correctly in a way that will encourage well-developed root structure?

Yay, how exciting  . I haven't had much luck with Rocoto from seed in the past, especially the brown variety I have been trying to grow. Did get 2 to sprout last season but they died off. Giving them another go this season though.

Just got back from bunnings, got me some jiffy pellets seeing as though you guys cant shut up about them :D They are the small ones and i just read how much gas loves them, are they really too small? Also mr bunnings did not have rockwool cubes so to the hydro store on monday as well as an electrical wholesalers for my ballast plug. Now off to drop some seeds into these jiffy thingos. Oh and drink beer, i love beer. :P

 Give em a go, see what you think. Just be careful because they are easy to overwater or dry out quickly. Make sure you check on them everyday if they aren't in a humidity crib.

Mmmm beer, can't wait till I can drink again, although I have been having one here and there ;)

Just put half a dozen into the humidy crib germ station. Woot i planted cumari from two sources in two of them and one seed each of orange scorpion, peach bhut, chiltepin and pinochio pepper. Now waity waity!

Hey, it's not just us on about the jiffy pellets - doesn't Neil use 'em too? Looking at his site, it appears he at least endorses them.... ;) (or does he just talk 'em up to make sales?)

Too small = roots growing out the bottom and sides too soon. Nothing worse than when you're not ready to pot up but the roots popping out everywhere beg to differ!

Unfortunately due to being "ALL OVER THE SHOP!" of late,
I had to cancel my plans to start some seeds :(
Good to see a few peeps getting stuck in though!
