Cheers trippa, just checked the ph of the water that i soaked the jiffies in. 9.5  I soaked ten pellets in about 700ml of water that normally reads 8.5, anyone else notice that jiffies are high ph?

Jiffy's are meant to be more like 5.2-5.7 I thought?? Coir or Peat?

These are peat. I added about 1ml of plant starter that consists of .05g/ltr indole acetic acid and .05g/ltr naphthalene acetic acid. Derrrr didn't even think of that before. Gimp!

Shouldn't that lower the pH though?? (throw something at me if I am missing something chemistry has never been a strong point of mine)

Ya got acids and bases. In my frunk head acids are higher in ph than bases. I think.

Other way around I am pretty sure.

Peat is acidic hence the lower pH of Peat Jiffy Pellets (ie 5.3), your water is slightly basic at 8.5. So any acids should lower the pH?

Fantastic growth on that baby, how old is it and what are you using to grow it, great job Jonny
Thanks, Grant!

Ummm, let me see.... around a month old now I think (can't remember.... when did I sow my first lot of seeds again?)

It was germinated in a Jiffy (of course! ;)) and it's been potted up in plain old Coles potting mix mixed with a coir brick. First time I fertilized, it was with Triple Boost (fish/seaweed/worm), and since then I've been giving it weekly doses of half-strength Chilli Focus. And as for lighting, I try to keep the plant as close as possible (like 1cm) under double Sylvania GroLux tubes; 19 hours light on (including 5 or 6 hours of real sun), 5 hours light off.

This little guy is kinda an experiment.... usually after pot-up, it's out from under the grow light due to space limitations.

He's a little bit bigger now, but it's this guy here:

Don't get started with the whole pH thing... it does my head in!

I've never checked before but I've been meaning to check both the pH of any medium I use and my water. What stuff do you use to do the water, fathead?

I have been adding a little plant starter to the jiffy soaking water. Otherwise i just use seasol, fish emulsion, eppies and dats eet. That chilli focus seems the shizzle!

Thanks, Grant!

How much Coir do you usually add to a mix??.

I have some all round certified organic potting mix but would love to use some coir to bulk it up a bit (Cheaper) and stop the need for constant watering and compaction in the containers.

Say I had 6 15 litre containers could I use 60 litres of Potting mix and 20-30 litres of coir or is that too much? I have never used coir before

I go with half half seedling mix coir for seedlings. I would think that your recipe should work ok as long as your potting mix is good enough.

Cheers Nova ... its just a premix from bunnings Amgrow organic potting mix.

See it here

It already has Coir in it but it seems to get too compacted much when wet for my liking, I want something to create a little more aeration and bulk.

I don't know maybe I should just use it as is??? Coir seems like a cheap filler for my pots though.

I am experimenting myself with seaweed, coir, potting mix and black gold (amended garden soil) real soon. By my thinking the seaweed should add bulk and aeration. As it breaks down slowly it should add food as well. I hope. :P

Nice looking plant happening there Gas

When I use Organic mixes for growing in containers I tend to find it does get too wet and doen't drain too well. So I add in some Perlite or Perlite/Vermiculite mix to add aeration and to help with drainage.
Works for me.
