How warm is too warm for Germination??

I just got my little electronic temp. gauge in the mail today. It looks like my chamber (in between 2 jiffy pellets in the middle of the propagator) has been running at around 33-35 degrees.

Now I know this is over the recommended temp. of around 26-30 degrees, but will this do too much harm at all? Remember this is in the middle of the day.

I have opened up the vents and taken off the towel used to keep it warmer mainly overnight and it is currently falling in temp (sitting at 31.5 as of now)

Am I better to keep a constant temp of 33-35 or let it fluctuate with day/night changes a little more??

I am giving the current seeds I started around the 1st June (Scotch Bonnetts and Dorset Nagas Old Seed) until the 30th to show themselves regardless before they make way for a new wave of sowings/varieties

They should still germ for ya. Try to keep the heat limited to about 30 IMO.

Yeah its actually running much warmer then I expected to tell the truth, Glad I got the temp guage. Now to get a thermostat

Where do you take the temperature? Is it best to dig the prob into a Jiffy pellet itself ?

So the temp with the probe dug into the jiffy pellet from the top to around 10mm depth is hovering around 30-32 degrees with the towel over the top and the vents open (this will likely drop to 27-30 during the night I think) So is this still too hot for high % Germination?

I priced up a thermostat (around $30 bucks) but that is something my budget won't stretch to until next pay month after hopefully all my germination is nearly done.

Sorry for all the questions guys just trying to perfect this before my next round of seeds go down!!

I would be inclined to keep the vents open. Your germ rate may decrease a little but not enough to worry about really IMO.

My temps have been running between 27 – 35 Deg.C and I have been having good germination. Most of them are Chinenses.
I have been told that temps between 27-30 are ideal but you have to have a Thermostat and buying a thermo heat pad is around 160 Buckaroonies here.
I have found the Wilds are more picky with Temps but have been having great success with the Chinenses.
This is what works for me anyway :)

Speaking of temps and all that, does anyone know what the lowest temp is that most chillies will germinate at?

The temps in my box are only sitting around 22-24C atm and germination rates have been utterly dismal. It would have to be about a month ago now since I put the last lot of seeds in there.... reckon if they haven't germinated by now, just toss 'em, find a warmer spot for my box and start again?

Until now, germination is something I've never really had a problem with.... :( (I guess 'cause I've never played with such low temps before!)

Have you got a heated propagation box Gas?? If so (On a tip from JR) chuck a thick towel under it and over it to get the temps up, it worked for me (albeit maybe a little too well  )

Two and a half weeks after sowing I have this.
seedlingswithnametags.jpg

This is about half of went in. The chamomile tea soaking really kept the helmets off... except for the Habanero Reds which is obviously an issue for that particular batch of seeds. Notice the Limon with the triple leaves. The Jalapeno is older. I put 5 Fataliis in because I have had problems germinating with them before with seed from a different source but that must have been a dud batch cos now they're all up!
So far nothing from about 10 Red Bhuts.

I bought the seed raising mix and ripped the bag open and used it for something else, then I left it out in the rain for a few weeks before using it for these.
That might be affecting my germination rates.

Does anyone think the seedlings look sick? I'm not too sure about them.

Fantastic, megamoo!

They don't look sick at all to me... just make sure they get enough light and if your seed raising mix doesn't contain any nutes, now would probably be a good time for a mild feeding.

Well, did the whole towel thing last night, and got up this morning to check and temps are at 28C....

Wonder now if my last lot of seeds will finally pop or if they are buggered and should just sow them all again.

Thanks, trips! (and JR! ;))

The seedlings look good as Gas said the only thing might be light. looks like a few are curving towards the light. Make sure your light source is as close to your plants as possible. Other than that I think they will be great.
