Silver_Surfer's Soggy Setback 2013

When the ground almost gets dry enough to work, it rains again.

Plants are long past ready and beginning to get root bound.

More rain today. At least the SE no longer suffers from a drought.

What??? What's this with 8 feet??? I don't understand this language your speaking. Ohhhh please tell me google translate is correct in saying 8 feet apart from bed to bed and not 8 feet high!!!!!!!

Aahaahhaaaaaa!!!! I know that's right. Mine too. Ehhmmmm!! (Clears throat)

Hoe handles don't "fit my hand" either, y'all! ;)

Had to come back for a 2nd look at your layout. That had to be quite a bit of work getting your rows setup. Heck, that would make the plantout more enjoyable to have such organization as that !

Dude, that rower is the shiznit.  Shapes rows AND a drip line.  Too friggen cool.  I remember your grow from last year you had spaced them out wider than the year previous.  They just grew wider.  I hate (love?) to say it, but I'm thinking that you are just going to have broader plants and are still going to have to crawl under them to

The pics of the plant out look awesome.  It's really going to take off now.

Awesome back saving idea, love the way it trenches the dripline in as well. Super detailed garden, great pictures too! Can’t wait to see how organized the garden rows final pictures will bestow on us mere mortals

Thanks, I'm way overdue getting things setup this season. I'd never have thought I'd be planting seeds in June!

Your plot looks great, SS! Can't go wrong with this setup
Hopefully the late start won't put a kink in the grow. Some greenery is already head high. ;)

Hahahaha! Love the make shift bed scraper. That's the way to roll baby. That is one gorgeous plot you've made for your plants there. Can't wait to see your garden in full on pod pornage.
I had fun making it and more fun sitting in the tractor seat and watching it do the work. :D Thanks. looking forward to the fruits of my labor a well.

 Only time will tell with this extremely late start. Never had to have my text sent through a translator before.

You seem to have more confidence in this season than I. :)

Watching your plantout should be an HBO special.  Freakin amazing.  We want more!
Didn't know HBO had gone XXX. :D  Gotta wait on the plants to cooperate with more. ;)

The bed maker reduced the row work considerably this season and the rusty metal probably added a little iron to the soil.

Oh man I hope I don't have to crawl through angry fire ants this season just to pick a few pods.

Promise_zps800dbd87.jpg

Trenched the maters and installed the mulch yesterday and barely started on the straw when the wind really kicked up and the western skies turned black so I headed indoors for a cold one since straw won't go where intended when windy and I don't like spreading soggy straw. Turned out to be just a little prelude for what was coming as it only lightly misted and the skies cleared around 7PM so I started out the front door, but had to go back for the camera for this shot. Skies darkened again shortly thereafter and brought a large wind powered dounpour this round so not much more was accomplished. Letting things dry out and taking today off; I don't want to make permanent tracks/indentations in the mulch and it's Sunday afterall. :)

Your plant out looks great!

And I see woods across the road, no deer or rabbits bother your garden? I had to fence mine to keep the rabbits out.

For your drip lines well or city water?

Anyways, really looks good and good luck this season!

Yep, live out in the country and if you look a few pages back you'll see I posted pics of tracks in the tilled ground of deer, rabbits and coon. That trio as well as moles give my plants or produce the once over every season. I just try and plant enough for all of us.

Well water, can't stand the taste of that city stuff. :P

Since I took the day off I might as well take a few shots of a few pods in the making. All this black is really heating things up and the plants aren't liking it. Gotta get the straw laid tomorrow. You can also tell that several plants weren't liking the extra long stint of crowding on the plant trailer.

A look at the mulch before it gets buried.

Need a bump before my dial up connection overheats.

Wow, man!  That looks so totally pro.  I'm assuming you had the plastic sheeting last year, as well.  So the fire ants make holes in it?  Or do they just come up around it and travel through the straw?  Either way, I had totally forgotten about that, but now I remember.  Total bummer.  I hope that your 8 foot spacing gives you enough room to walk between the rows.  If not, at 8 feet, you could easily prune them later in the season to maintain a walking space and still have incredibly wide plants.

Gonna look even more awesome once the straw gets laid down.  And things are podding up already, I see.  Simply full of win.

Always some of the cleanest lines in the forum .. looking schmick as usual. Nice wide rows , have you sorted out a tractor mounted chilli harvester yet?? ;) keep on growing. Best of luck with the season ahead

Now that is what I am talking about.  I really like your staking method and if I didn't already have my stakes in, I would be going with that.  Maybe next year.  But how much spacing are you going with?  I remember last year where you had to crawl in between rows to get to your plants, but it looks like there is a bit more space going on in there.  Any change?

Yep, had it mulched and strawed the last few seasons. Ants don't make any holes in the mulch, they just invade and sometimes build nests within the garden and travel below and above the mulch; real troublesome and painful pests. Straw is spread. :)

Thanks Trippa, maybe train some monkeys to harvest em. :D  I doubt anyone has come up with a mechanical pod harvester that didn't destroy the plant, but it would be a nice invention.

Amazing how fast your plants take hold. Mine usually go a couple weeks before they show any substantial growth.
I don't do anything special, just dig a hole, drop the plant in, fill in a little dirt and water. I think they're just glad to escape their small potted prison. ;)

As for going back, I can't keep up going forward....so I asked
:) Ran a rabbit out of the garden this evening.

As always great update, still have my money on your crawling to harvest unless you prune...
I'm betting that even of they swell to fill the space the branches won't be interlocked and I'll be able to push through. I'll never prune em in any case. :)

It's like a Florida weave on a small scale and gives the plants more support than the Florida weave. I call it the mini weave. :D
Yeah, a lot more space. Two years ago it was 3 feet, last year 5 feet and this season 8 feet. Maybe the plants won't hog all of the space this season; at least that's what I'm counting on.

Got some seed planted: Pink-eye Purple Hull Peas, Fife Creek Cowhorn Okra, Ambrosia and Park's Whopper Cantaloupe, Yellow straight neck squash and Kamo Eggplant. Also got the last of the chille plants in ground and spread the straw. Work's done; now it's just sit back and wait til harvest. Well I do have to flip a few valves, but am thinking about installing a programmed solenoid valve system. Maybe not, gotta leave something to do. ;)
