WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
 • 5 Jalapeño
 • 1 Cayenne
 • 1 Serrano
 • 7 Datil
 • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
 • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)
2ypb3mx.jpg

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.
2aikob7.jpg

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

A few links to some of my better posts ;)Did you say powder?Did you say MoA?Black light night shots & horn wormsReviews and taste impressions in no order

Give the plant some time, and less light. It may be shocked the inner growth can take a week or so. I'd keep it in the shade. It the end branching starts to brown cut it off. The growth will start low and work its way up.
I have been trimming the browned out branches, will move back to shade as I moved earlier today to 30% of daylight and that was probably a bad move in retrospect. Keep in mind that it’s been poisoned from too much soap and that stuff kills loads of bugs. The mistake I did was not to water her first and when I threw in the suds it probably sucked that right up as she only got water once a week but man did she put out …

Nice Hab shots, I'd be happy right now with one of those on my plate.
Thanks and yea one for dinner, breakfast and den lunch, snack and mid-night snack, hehe. Your pay day, soon come, will far out weigh mine ... can’t wait to see pics of your soon come pods :)

The Scotch ...MoA is starting to take off. You'll probably start to see new leaf clusters every few days......wait till it branches out. Like Steve's.........one bud after another.
I can’t wait to see these pods, I’ll be driving up to Steve’s as soon as he calls … Steve don’t forget to call mon, hehe.

Thanks for your help earlier, I'll give that idea a whirl this weekend...
No problema brethren, I just hope what how I wrote it made sense to you. It's always nice to reciprocate back at ya. If you have any other questions just hail me.

Have a great weekend ^_^

I agree and I'm no expert, but I see green and that's a good thing!

Scott
Scott thanks for checking my glog, I remain optimistic but … here’s how she looks after a few weeks, still no new growth and the green that makes one think she’ll make it, including me, is slowly turning brown. Not good sign :(

In comparison here was a bushy multi-plant that I gave a complete shaving.

Coffee starter testing is partially over as I had to transplant 5 of the seedlings but none got fungal gnats, to see why read on. 3 on the left are in dirt, 2 in the center are in coffee grounds and the 2 on the right are in 50/50 coffee dirt mix. The one above which wasn’t part of the test is a baby MoA that’s also going to be transplanted. From what I’ve seen the 50/50 mixed one sprouted within a week, the mix kept any fungal gnats from laying eggs there and possibly the proximity of the 3 dirt ones to all that coffee kept them safe as well but I'm not sure. As stated before when I started this test they were in a high fungal gnat damp area. I will still wait to see if the pure coffee ones sprout although they’ve only been in 2 days so I don't expect till next week if they pop at all.

Baby JA Hab ready for up potting, see next picture as to how I know ...

Friends ask me how I know it’s time to transplant the starters and I just tell them to look at the drain hole every few days.

Apologies for the blurry pictures but my better half helped me out as both my hands were dirty. I included this picture because I found the path the hatching seedling took to reach up towards the sun interesting on this one. I wonder if she was all hopped up on caffeine and got confused or was pulling a 360 being the daughter of a skater ;)

As always, thank you for reading, looking, comments and suggestions. I might have some foodie shots later, have a great Saturday evening!

Came back to post the foodie I wrote about earlier .... Onion, garlic, virgin olive oil and cayenne pepper sofrito.

Sautée chilled white rice over the sofrito above. Once the rice is cooked/fried enough add some Caribbean Island Soy and sautée a little longer.

Doc Brent I agree that the Serrano isn't very hot, the one I finally tried (pictured on steak above) is as hot as my cayenne peppers. I would consider them low heat but certainly tasty :)

Thanks for stopping by all ^_^

After thinking more on how good seaweed is (even in a salad :P ), I realized I'll be at Cape Hatteras, NC in late July. But then I realized it might be illegal to pick it off the beach. So this is as close as I could get with Harvesting seaweed NC . I think it's probably legal unless it's a nature preserve. I'm going to go for, I may try to dry it before hauling it back home.

If arrested I'll tell them it's for personal use.... It's for medical purposes....I promise not to inhale.

Here's another quote, Carl, to cops: "'Kacie . . . wrapped around my legs . . . her hands-on education' . . . but that was in Maine! And that's in Canada!!" They tend not to arrest people who talk completely stupid; let them think you have triple digit IQ and ya be fined or sent to Gitmo. Honey, you'll get get some killer seaweed if black flag is out for rips at high tide--just be careful (act dumb but don't show DL--they don't like VAers): being from Western NC I never got that disdain on OBX because aside from seafood and CHNS, it's ugly, compared to other beaches--it is illegal on CHNS. Everything is. However, the same rips, same seaweed washes up on Avon and Salvo. South and North. Or Rodanthe. O-Inlet has some good weed too. I have a better idea on a meet-up: Awful Arthur's. I only do the O on half there, bring my own sauce, since I generally eat 3 pecks. Yep: I weigh in @ 110 and can down 3 pecks oysters . . . you buying right? After I bail ya out of a NC jail, geez? Ingrate!

I'd say to do it . . . but be discrete or hit another beach. Got 30 gallons shoved into 5 gal buckets and coolers one morning at Cherry Grove, SC near inlet. Leaving in an hour, good stuff--I did wash salt off with distilled water once at house, and kept the critters which were stinking up vehicle on way back. But . . . eh. I share some my 7 Pod yeller sauce you meet me @ AArth's! ;)

Ramon, had a thought, on foodie porn? :drooling: As FGump said, "That's all I have to say about th-aa-t." But yep: +1 Carib Soy :P Thank Gawd gettin' over stomach bug never got over to begin with--and fixed it up last night with an omelet covered with my Carib-Mango-Pineapple sauce: really, helped. Stomach burned for 2 hours and feel better today! Cure.

Have you thought, and sometimes we gotta let dead bury dead, but had to grow in containers in Raleigh: I dosed a plant with soap. Old fella at Burke Bro. Hardware (brilliant gardener) told me to hit the roots with H202 since I had choked the roots of O2 with the soap to kill the other nasties. BUT to use distilled water with hydrogen peroxide to get air to roots. I reluctantly did (because sometimes they just die) and the pepper plant came back. Nice to be back. Love that steak shot and the rice  ;) And have also found some Bti to be weak. I just add another wafer and smell it.

Man, that steak and sides look great. Nice presentation, to boot! Glad to hear the Serrano had good flavor and some heat.

Cool results with the coffee and fungus gnats (or lack thereof). I need to keep that in mind for next season. Little guys look great.

just to make sure ... you put (leftover) rice that you cooked before into the sofrito ... right?

I hope you dont mind my posting a recipe here ...

have you heard of LECSO? ... after Gulash the second most famous hungarian dish - we ate tons of it when I was a child... easy/fast to prep, dirt cheap (assuming you grow your veggies) and incredibly "rico".

basically a stew of onions/garlic/bell peppers/tomatoe

the good thing is, while not a hot dish per se, it BEGs to be spiced up ...

here's a pic:

Lecs%25C3%25B3.jpg

and here's the recipe (which really you dont need) ... I cook most of my stuff "al ojo".

http://katy-parahinc...scho-lecso.html

best of luck ...also with your plant ... I had a pepper plant (a small ornamental baby rocotto) that we overwintered outdoors (which means we did NOTHING ;-) ... and I completely forgot about here ... we have been without rain for at least 3 months now and I found the plant beneath some weeds and gave here some water .... voilá ... green leaves after about 2 weeks ;-)

cheers

Ramon's Gourmet kitchen! Love the island soy!
Thank you, too kind mon ^_^

Don't give up on old girl. Keep her in the shade and give her a drink of clean water very other day. She will come back to you!
Bite your tongue, I never give up. That said, this morning I woke up to 5 of her only leaves standing to “attention” but no new growth yet.

Wonderful glog. Thank you for sharing
and Thank you for reading :)

Hey Ramon,

Nice update, love the foodies!

For encouragement look at Chris's (desertchris) OW's that froze, they're coming back at the crown.

Take care,

Scott
Thanks Scott! Yea I’ve been checking Chris’s glog from time to time even though I don’t post frequent enough. I need to step up my reading as I’m behind on his, so many great glogs and so little time, yours is also a great one ^_^

Annie all the print past “wrapped around my legs” is a blur hahaha … sick one that WalkGood ;) Muchacha I love reading your stuff … once I get done here I need to check into casa de Annie FTW! I wouldn’t mind checking Gitmo out, my JA friends surfed there and they said it was killa!

Im pulling for ya bud! At least we can always start more seeds mon. Thats the wonderful thing about mother earth! Your other seedlings are lookin great!
Thanks and ditto on ya thoughs mon ^_^

That Caribbean soy is killer on lightly sautéed garlic shrimp and I’m not ready to bury any dead … leaves at attention ^^

DEEEEELICIOUS
Thanks Pia, your foodie as well, back at ya girl ^_^

>_< I got a message from THP that I couldn't post because "You have posted more than the allowed number of quoted blocks of text," so if someone bumps me I'll finish the replys and if not I'll add the post later when allowed ;/ I wonder if it allows you to come back and edit the same post adding the rest of my replies¿? as I like to use quotes in replies.

It's a tuff call on the plant. Cut it back so the plant will throw its energy into the green wood. Cut the plant back and check the center of the branches. It they're still green/white thats a good sign. You can still get new growth on old wood as seen from your total cutback (that one's going to flourish). I wouldn't give up yet, on the plant. When it starts up the growth may be towards the bottom only. Do you want to wait or use the pot for a new arrival ?

I like the close-up photography of the eggs. The seedlings are moving into their "Mansions"

I new someone that had an office plant, he'd pour the remainder of the coffee pot into the plant everyday. The plant survived for over 4 yrs that I remember. I 'd see the plant a few times a yr and the day it died he couldn't figure out why. It started to look sparse and needed to be potted up, larger pot new soil.
He did it his way. I scatter coffee grounds over the flower beds. Our soil is heavy clay and fill, that helps break it down when I turn the ground over.......soon I hope...ha

That sofrito always knocks me out when I see it. Translucent onions, peppers and the rice.
Do you use a medium grain rice for that dish?
Keep the photos coming, they're enjoyable to look at...

Thanks for the bump Greg!

Thanks Doc Brent ^_^ please keep me informed on any coffee stuff you do, I certainly love to read others opinions and experiences. I’m not too hopeful on the 100% test I’m running now but thought it to be interesting enough to see if it works. The 50/50 mix did yield 2 of 3 planted, I’m still waiting on the 3[sup]rd[/sup] but maybe it was too deep. I’ll update any changes. As always it’s a pleasure to see ya here … high five on dem Serrano peppers! Can’t wait for the rest of mine to red up, I want try some cooking & dip with them ^_^

just to make sure ... you put (leftover) rice that you cooked before into the sofrito ... right?
Yes, typical fried rice style.

I hope you dont mind my posting a recipe here ...
No I don't mind, post away ... I love it when others share back … great job!

have you heard of LECSO? … … *pic* …
Not till now but Lecsó looks yummy ^_^ I did also read click here. Thanks for the “best wishes” on my girl, hopefully she’ll come back to double production ^_^ Hope you get that needed rain and great save on dat plant! And I will taste your dish soon ... hope to post up some pics down the road :)

Great points Greg! I am cutting back a little at a time and only the dead. Some of the few leaves left were upright this morning, this is positive in my book as the rest dried up and fell. No that pot is hers if she till she tells us what she’s going to do, I never give up till the end and it’s gotta be clear for me. I have other large pots for the new arrivals. Thanks on the picture comment of close ups ^_^ Strange that I can’t capture the garlic well in those pictures but it’s there, maybe next time I’ll shoot the garlic first, hehe. I use long rice as we buy 50 lb. sacks of it, on most other rice dishes we buy smaller bags for the specific tasks. So was his error not giving her new soil? Thanks on all dem add a boy ^_^ and back at ya mon!

Hoping everyone have a great week!

Edit:
Now for a non, thought you guys might get a kick out of my Hoya carnosa. I found a little tiny one up high growing on one of my Live Oaks, from it I started 4 others. Interesting leaves, very thick, a little wax looking and you’d be surprised how many people as me if it’s real, lol. I just say “isn’t that a realistic looking plastic,” lols.

Here's how her flowers look, star upon another star and some of the blooms look like perfect ball shape of all the flowers.

5 leaves standing up to me sounds good.

But it's too close to supper to be cruisin' all this food porn. And Annie's A-Arthur talk made it worse, and the hab-mango-pineapple salsa was a little deja-da-voodoo all over again--- practically prescient (been eaten that for two weeks now (yes on eggs!) smoked my habs -it's gotta have cilantro).
I can smell the sofrito from here.

Pavlov's dog's got nothing on me.

So we’re on the same page. Many a time I come to this site, start reading only to come across someone’s foodie. Den all of da sudden I’m running off to eat something, no bell required, lols.

i love how i get a chance to peek in on some glogs, and i get awesome food pics!
Thanks for stopping by Jason, cold down here tonight but I'm guessing it's colder there. Good night for some hot chili con carne :)

I haven’t really featured any pictures of my Thai Hot pepper plants in ages as they run on cruise control and I only use them to top off food or the occasional pepper fix while working in the yard. So what prompted me to feature a few pictures of the larger one? This morning when I went to water them I noticed a pepper seedling had popped up thru the coffee ground cover she sports. Upon closer inspection there are five seedlings that have sprouted, self propagation. I thought how cool is that; thus this post of pictures.

I have two of these plants; the larger one is about 8 ½” tall x 9” wide and the second one is 4” x 7”. These two plants are constantly putting out pods like a PEZ dispenser, faster than I use the pods so some even dry up on the plant and that is possibly how this happened. Well I’m now going to start pulling the pods till I get enough to try out a different sauce. She certainly got my attention, hehe.

The pods are no larger than ¾” long so I'll need to save a ton of dem and while I do not consider these to be super hot, they do have a nice kick to them. AFAIK there is a larger variety called “Giant Thai Hot.” But I have never eatten them or seen the plant other than in pictures. The peppers on the larger variety get to about 2″ long and there is also a version that has orange peppers other than the red ones I have.

While these are not very good pictures, I hope you enjoy the read and seeing the shots …
