    misc Question about hardening off.

I have too many to harden (until I finally get the hoop house functioning) so I've never done it. Guess I've been lucky - can't say NO losses but never much loss. Might be worth trying an experiment to compare how well they do post-transplant with and without though.

misc It's not a pod! FFS

The spelling "chile" is entered into the 1983 congressional record by a New Mexico senator. Granted he was specifically referring to NM chiles, but that's my heritage so I'm sticking by it. The other spellings refer to the stew made from chiles. Or people who don't know chile. :)

I vote we call ALL botanical berries berries - so squash, cucumber, tomato, peppers, etc... Petition grocery stores to categorize them correctly. (That also means that strawberries are not berries, just call them strawfruit.) Although my son does call tepins "danger berries" And it's chilE! :)

Like I said, I need to read those novels :) That's some good attention to detail. The TV series had good material to start from!

    hobbies Astronomy

We went to SC for the last one but it was overcast. We made a trip to Vincennes Indiana for this one - the town went all-out to welcome people with a big festival and everything, really cool on their part. Day turned out to be bright and sunny, very minimal clouds, so we got to see totality...

container Questions about Growing C. pubescens

i don't have enough experience with pubescens to have much idea of their growth pattern. I THINK they're comparable to annuums. A tomato cage should be more than enough, but let's see what those with more experience say. (BTW I don't trellis anything - I just put in stakes for any plants that...

    movies Sci-Fi

I just started SG1 again a few weeks ago and I still didn't see the scene in question - watching on Prime. Maybe it's from the movie? Yes, and The Gripping Hand. I like pretty much all the Niven/Pournelle collabs: Lucifer's Hammer, Footfall, and Oath of Fealty (with Steven Barnes) The novels...

hybrid Most "stable" Super Hot hydrids

No idea how long something has to be around to be considered heirloom. I do know that it at least has to be stable. As for the habanero, I know that one is old enough! I think 8,000 years is long enough... Looks like the scoprion was developed in the 1990's. By any definition I'm able to find...

hybrid Most "stable" Super Hot hydrids

I would find that surprising - I'm pretty sure they haven't been around long enough to be considered heirlooms even if they are stable enough.

I don't suppose you have any experience using either of those against Anthracnose? I found some studies that seem to suggest they help but I couldn't find any of the published conclusions...

lighting Question about buying and using indoor led lights.

Supposedly color (wavelength) matters for vegetative growth vs. blooming & fruit set. As I recall, redder is better for vegetation, bluer better for blooming. A good full-spectrum light is probably best overall though. My dual-color lights, I usually just have both colors on all the time. I...

    wanted Carolina Reaper plants wanted!

I have had absolutely horrible luck with reapers this year - only one viable plant, out of probably 2 dozen started! Must have had old seeds, because only the reapers failed! Anyway, I need some reapers! I would like 6-12 if possible. If you have extra starts please let me know!

I use potassium nitrate for my soak, typically overnight. Others use hydrogen peroxide. However you go (even plain water), soaking will definitely help speed germination. It looks like you're about the same zone as me. I usually have a couple months of good production before first frost. If you...

    condiment 505 Salsa?

Interesting that you say the best chiles are from Young Guns - the jar I had said it was made with Young Guns chile... Production address for 505 is in Hatch. Rather a disappointment to me that a product like this is coming from there. The one I got was packaged like this...
