    Open Pollinated Mysteries

My first experience with open pollination came last year when I realized that I had Jimmy Nardello sweet peppers that had crossed with Serranos. They looked like Nardellos but had some seriously painful and lasting oil in them. This year I have a few more interesting plants showing up. A few...

    Way too many peppers!!!!!

This year I have a ridiculous crop of all of my pepper varieties. I planted nearly 100 plants which have all done well. I have about 15 plants that I don't really know what to do with though. Hot Paper Lantern, Hot Lemon, and Dong Xuan. I don't have any tomatoes ripe yet, so I can't make any...

Planted out 97 plants and then....

...a thunderstorm pops up out of nowhere. Heavy rain, wind, and pea sized hail. The hail was enough that it completely covered my deck. After some tense moments, I checked on my plants and the only damage was a few torn leaves. The last plant had been in the ground for less than 30 minutes...

Does anybody use Preen in their gardens? If you do, how effective is it at controlling weeds?

    soil Stinky soil mix

I just transplanted my peppers into 16oz cups. The soil is a mix of potting soil, worm castings, vermiculite, bone meal, and perlite. I keep my plants under some fluorescents in my basement. My basement now stinks like nasty, sweaty, gym socks. The only difference is that I added bone meal...

    annuum Huge Jalapenos

At my local supermarket where I always buy Jalapenos there normally is nothing nothing special about them, once in a while there will be a few with some black on them. Today the Jalapenos were absolute monsters! The longest one I could find was a full 6 inches in length. The fattest one I...

    seeds Air temperature for seedlings

I just put a thermometer into my lighted grow box and it is up to 88*. Is this a good temperature for my 2 week old seedlings? How hot is too hot for seedlings? Any other temperature thoughts or wisdom?

    seeds Seed planting depth

I sent my brother some of my pepper seed collection. We both planted on Feb. 1st. He emailed me that he only has 1 sprout, while the majority of mine have sprouted. I asked him how deep he planted them and he said about a 1/2" deep. I planted mine about 1/8" or less deep. Are his going to...

    seeds Checking unsprouted seeds

I started my seeds in a 72 cell flat. There are a few varieties that have not sprouted and they were all planted on Feb. 1. Is there a way to check the unsprouted seeds to see if anything is happening?

    Burying the stems?

I just wanted to make sure that burying the stems of seedlings is good to do. I am pretty sure that it is, but I wanted to make sure. Should I bury the seedlings right up to just below the cotyledons? Thanks.

    Extending the growing season.

I am sure there are other growers in growing zones 4,3,2,1 that have some tips on getting some more time out of their growing season. The trouble with where I live is frost. I can have frost until the end of May and starting again in early September.

Why do hot peppers lose their heat in cool weather?

I have noticed that peppers that previously had been scalding hot a few days earlier lose all of their heat when the weather here gets cold. Especially if there is a frost. Even if I cover my pepper plants with blankets to keep the frost off, the peppers still lose their heat. Last season, we...

Different shaped/sized pods on same plant?

Last summer, I was growing Black Hungarians. I had around six plants growing. All of the plants produced a fair amount of peppers. One of the plants gave me the traditional conical Black Hungarian shaped peppers, but it also gave me some that were about 5" long and 1" across. It also...

organic Miracle Gro Organic Choice 3-2-3 Fertilizer

My local Ace Hardware has this stuff on clearance in 20# bags. It says it is made from pelletized "dehydrated poultry litter." Would this fertilizer be good for my peppers or anything else?

First time growing extra hot peppers

I just stumbled upon this forum this morning and it is awesome! This will be my 4th summer growing peppers. I have been successful growing many kinds of peppers with a couple exceptions. Last summer, I tried to grow Trinidad Scorpions and Orange Manzanos. The plants looked healthy but these...
