    Pollination: Fan vs. Q-Tip

Is an oscillating fan aimed at the plants good enough to pollinate the flowers? It should be there anyway because airflow is an issue indoors, but do I still need to go through and manually pollinate every flower? How good is pollinating by wind?   If you need any details about my grow setup...

    tutorial Fermenting Peppers 101

Used some water kefir hooch to ferment about a half gallon of sauce. Five weeks and it came out goooooooooooood.

I have a pound of peppers, what recipe should I use?

I have a pound total of peppers. Mostly jalapenos with some bhut jolokias. I also have some sourdough hooch laying around and I'd like to try my hand at a ferment. Anyone got a recipe/instructions they'd like to give me? I've read the sanitation and fermenting threads so I think I know what I'm...

tepin x lemon drop (new f3s in the dirt)

Same here. They get ~12hrs of light and then just give up til the next morning. I don't worry too much about it. Just seems like a quirk of the plant. They smell nice, though.

seeds Don't you hate "helmet head" seedlings?

Patience and a pair of these has saved every helmet head I've ever had. Just be careful not to rip the cotyledons.   http://www.amazon.com/Aven-Technik-Precision-Electronics-Tweezers/dp/B0087F5K3M

    Secret Project.........

Sounds interesting. I'm growing a few Peters myself. Have you ever grown them before? They're pretty quick going, even for annuum. I hope you get published just so the world can see what big peppers you grow.

    Secret Project.........

cuzz, are you doing this in a lab or are you getting the choline to do it yourself? Either would be great and I can't wait for the results from you and Nigel.   Too bad to hear about Stubbs. I hardly knew him.

    seeds Seedling leaf discolouration

20cm seems pretty darn close but LEDs don't really give off a lot of heat. Back up the light to 30-35cm and put some reflectors around your plants. Do you have any? Pics would be helpful.

Carolina Reaper Flowering But No Peppers

I've Q-tipped every flower I've ever harvested a pod from. Use your thumb and index finger to fluff the Q tip and only use the very end to stir the pollen around. You should see little yellow clouds near the flower. The cotton traps most of the pollen so you only want to use a very very small...

    Remove flowers?

Pinching/not pinching is all up to you. Since they're overwintered plants, they probably already have a really strong stalk and won't benefit from pinching as much. If you want them to grow more veg, pinch. If you're happy with the amount of leaves they have right now, let the buds grow and...

    seeds Seedling leaf discolouration

Those plants are healthy, just a little sunburnt. The purple coloration is the plant's defense against high energy violet/ultraviolet light. When you plant those guys outside, expect that purple color to be on a lot of the plant's older/more exposed leaves. Jamison's correct, just raise the...

    Doomus's 2014 Closet-GLOG

Well folks here's another update. Word 'round the dorm campfire is that the Fire Marshall is coming to town and that he's a dick. As such, I have to keep my HPS lamp stowed neatly away during business hours. Can't risk losing it til summer.   So now my babies are chilling on the windowsill for a...

    Isolation Help

The mesh isn't to keep pollen from circulating out. The main goal is to keep pollinators from crossing your plants. Pollen doesn't travel too well on wind by itself and peppers self-pollinate readily so pollinators are your real risk when it comes to avoiding crosses. In terms of certainty...

health What's wrong with the guy in front?

http://www.hydroponics.net/learn/nutrient_deficiencies.asp   In my opinion you need to lay back and let it correct itself. The plant looks pretty healthy otherwise, so why worry? Don't get me wrong, I understand very much what it's like to be an overly protective pepper papa, but peppers really...

health What's wrong with the guy in front?

Plants move a lot. Toward the end of the day they get kind of "sleepy."   Here's one of my Bhut Jolokias over the course of probably 15 hours. I forget how long I ran the timelapse.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltQ0TsNTDxY
