outdoors a fishing thread

I'm gonna use this general thread to ask for an ID.  Are these Bullhead catfish?  Sorry - I didn't catch any and don't have any better pictures.  Whatever the f*** they are, they don't like worms, as they literally swam right through my nightcralers without even taking a nibble:

Yea I'm thinking carp or suckers

In New York State, a Pickerel must be at least fifteen inches in order for the angler to keep it.  I tossed this one back as it was only twelve inches.  I also tossed back another 12 inch one and an eight inch one.  Four out of the last seven I landed were below the minimum "keeper" size and none of the ones that I kept were more than 15 1/2 inches.  Frustrating for me as these are my favorite because they taste better than the other fish I catch.  Either they aren't too abundant, or I'm not hitting the right spots:

I couldn't keep this as Bass season doesn't start until June 16th, but it was fun to catch.  It grabbed my Senko as soon as it hit the water.  I felt as if I hit the bass on the head!  Hard to tell form the picture, but it was fifteen inches:

I look forward to eating this.  I've never caught a Bullhead Catfish before:

This is a nice size for a Yellow Perch; the second largest I've caught:

Nice. I've eaten them cats before.

We'd fish at night then have eggs hashbrowns and panfried fillets.

Great eats
I was surprised to have caught this as people local to the area have always told me that they only feed at night.  This one took my worm in the middle of the day.  I was planning on skinning it but gave up.  The problem was that the fish was alive at the cleaning table and it was so slimy and squirmy that I was afraid I would cut myself with the fillet knife if I attempted the long horizontal cut.  I did what I know how to do which is to cut the head off below the gills and gut it.  I'm gonna fry it up later in the week and see how well I can tolerate the skin.

If you gut it first....Grab the head in one hand and the body in the other.

Place your thumbs on the back of the spot from the top where the head connects.

Snap the spine and use the head with skin intact and pull backwards down the length of the body.

The skin should stay intact and peel right off.

Springer season has been a shit show. Very disappointed. Guides and sea lions have completely taken over. The casual sport fisherman has very slim chance to get fish on the Willamette anymore. Bummer.

Still fun to reel up a five foot sturgeon though.

I took this little video

The fish is currently thawing in my refrigerator with the head off and all of the skin on.  I'm going to fry it up for dinner tomorrow night.  Can I use a variation of the same technique to get the skin off?

Take a pair of pliers and pull skin from head end down to tail.

Might have to help tease it down or make a couple relief slits in skin.

Or just fillet it and then remove skin.

I ate it before your reply:)

Nothing was wrong with the skin.  I'm not a good filletter and not a big fan of it anyway.  I generally like skin and with the Catfish, I had the added benefit of not having to scale it.  I also don't mind eating around the bones.  Here is my review:

Went to Lake Superior with the wife for our 10 year anniversary this weekend and saw some fish, then went out and caught some fish. Had a great weekend and remembered to take some pics

This is the trail down to the mouth of the French river, on the north shore of Lake Superior.
One of many rivers where our native trout and salmon come to spawn

I vacuum seal my fish as well.

What kind of rod/reel is that?  Some kind of trolling combo with a line counter reel?

I think that was the Daiwa Accudepth plus, but i can't be certain.
This gear belonged to the guide.  I only got to play with it for half a day  ;)
