BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

Brandon man looks like you're busier than a one legged man in a but kickin contest lol. Seriously though I watch your Glog closely as Im just a few months behind you. I'm hoping I can skip the 1 gallon pot up because if I can't like you I'll have no room. How much did you have to pay for them pots? When the season is all said and done I want some of those Infinity Monster seeds any idea what the cross is there? Maybe could trade you some Naga Vipers. You are the master of diasaster my friend everytime a problem comes up you find a solution. What grade was that perlite you bought? Are you still using Black Gold? I'm just curious if you are how much difference did the perlite make ? Good job my friend we should hook up on the phone some time Its hard to keep up with with all the Glogs but I always enjoy catching up with yours !

Wow Brandon everything is looking great and exploding. Amazing comeback from that Douglah I had a little set up back from the heavy winds and hail that did some damage but they are starting to recover and hopefully match a similar recovery to yours. O and thanks for the Orchard spray recommendation that I used today due to an unscheduled festival going on my plants.
Thanks again hopefully the awesome progress continues for you

You're doing a really good job buddy!!
I would be careful with budding smaller plants…it really slows them down and the overall production will be way down when compared to the others. The work load doesn't let up either – it just changes phases and that's all.

I'll talk to you sometime this week,
Jack

Sweet, thanks for the info BigC. We transplanted them right before planting the new seeds. We didn't presoak the soil, put them in with some fert and then bottom watered them. The fert we used is now gone (thankfully) we're going to switch to the one you mentioned to us. We're also going to get the rest that you told us about shortly as well so we can start adding to the soil shortly. One of the plants from Megahot is quite tall, though not at all bushy, but almost makes me want to put it outside. For now I'll have to wait and hope it can go outside soon.
Again thanks for all the help.
Aaron

Anytime guys. keep me posted with how your plants do with the ferts. I'm still waiting to take inventory.. Damn weather.

Wow amazing pics. Amazing douglah turnaround. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for stoppin by PJ! That douglahs twice the size now too lol.. crazy how fast they grow at this age. Hope your grows going well for you.

Ha! Yes, I'm pretty busy.. It's alright though. Being busy is better than being bored! Your starting pretty late in the season so I think you'll be fine skippin the gallon pot up. I payed 45 dollars for 264 1gallon pots. I'll be glad to hook you up with some I Monster seeds.. No idea what the cross is behind them but the story goes.. Jack(superhot) grew 4-8? Infinity plants in 2011 and 1 one went rouge and produced huge dark orange/reddish pods. A few members other than myself are growing it out to see what happens. As for the Nagaviper seeds? I already have 6 plants growing right now :) Thank you though! You'll probably end up with a few unknown crosses with so many plants of the same variety.. Keep me in mind if you do! :D I don't know what grade the perlite is (doesn't say) but there is every size of perlite possible in each bag, from sand like to rock like. As for soil I switched to the local carpinito brothers potting soil once I potted up to gallon size. I think the perlite helped alot.. The soil originally almost killed my starts so other than perlite(drainage problems) and young age I don't know what the problem was a few months back.. Thanks for the compliments. Hope all is well with you!

Thanks dude! I'm glad the Bonide spray worked. That stuff is a miracle ina bottle. I have it stocked piled for the upcoming problems I'm sure I'll have lol.. Thanks for the good words. I hope everythings good with you and your grow.

Thank you Jack! I don't have a choice with the budding unfortunately. I barely have time for what I'm doing already lol. I have noticed most of the buds are turning yellow and falling off though. Which I'm happy about, the plants are doing the work for me! As long as a get a couple pods I'll be happy :) I just want the work load to switch to the outside phase at this point lol.

Weekend Update

Well, I'm sticking to my word. It's April, and it's time to bring some plants outside. I decided to start hardening off my OWs. I'm seeing rain for a week straight and even with the GH's I'd like to wait a week before bringing the starts out. I won't have room for half of them in a weeks time anyway so they won't have much of a choice.

Talk about hardening off.. The OWs were taking on some pretty serious wind and rain yesterday.. Little different than the 72 degree household they've gotten use to.

To harden off I covered the GH's with shade cloth.. Each day that passes I'll take the cloth off for 30 minutes longer than the last while keeping track of the hours the plants spend in cloudy skies vs sunny skies. Correct me if I'm wrong but if I get them use to being under cloudy skies for a week (which it looks like will be the case) and a 65 degree sunny day comes around I'm pretty sure they're gonna end up lookin like I threw them in a deep fryer.. So I'll be hardening off to both weather scenerios just to be safe.

Ha, Originally I didn't think the OWs needed to be hardened off since they were on a south facing window sil.. Yeah that was a dumb idea. Last week when I snapped the picture of the OW yellow bhut hanging outside I kept it out there for a good 5 hours in full sun and the next day it was dropping leaves.. I couldn't figure it out until I saw the brown tint on the tops of the bigger leaves.. Sunburn. Lesson learned. :halo:

I contacted Chris(cmpman) to find out what my "Purple" Trinidad Vipers could have been crossed with and I gotta say.. I was pretty freaking excited to hear the news... The Trinidad Viper was right next to a Purple Bhut Plant. That solves that mystery :hell:

Trinidad Viper X Purple Bhut Jolokia. I can't wait to see the pods this thing puts out!
IMG_1730.jpg

Well the whole rotating them in and out of the GH/Closet thing is coming to an end. Half of the flats won't fit in the GH and a good 10 flats barely fit in the grow closet.. I'm talkin an inch away from the lights tight fit. I'm also really surprised they don't burn in there.. So the dining room table and parts of the kitchen counter are now they're new homes for the next week, My wifes super excited about this as you can imagine lol.

The few chances I've had to check out the other glogs I noticed that alot of you guys are waiting until the night temps are above 50 before bringing them outside.. If I waited for that I wouldn't be bringing them out until mid-July. lol.. All in all we MIGHT get 3 weeks of days where the night temps are above 50, and that's if were lucky. I know night temps above 50 are ideal for these plants but here in the PNW we don't have a choice. With that said I thought it would be interesting to start posting the weeks weather so you guy's can see the growth rate vs weather conditions, how these plants do in near freezing night temps, rain storms, etc.. I'm seeing 70-80 degree days 55 degree nights with alot of growers in other areas, I'm jealous! The OWs spent the night in the GH yesterday. It was 38 degrees at midnight. I'm Happy to say they're doing just fine this morning :)

The 7Day.. Got Rain?

After reviewing tons of applications I finally found the perfect hire to help me out with the work load ;)

Fantastic update! Won't be long before your first ripe super! Your starts look freaking perfect to. Keep doing what you're doing! Have to remember to check out the helper vid when I get home from work.

Great update Brandon,
Just checked the message than I went here. You are a busy man and a business man...you sure sold me on your plants. Amazing what a difference looking back a few weeks and what you have today. I see my plants everyday so I can't distinguish the difference in mine from then til now.
Excellent video, cute daughter, One day she'll be collecting money for you at one of your future plant sales.....
Man, that purple plant looks awesome it really stands out in your window shot.
You've got me thinking bout moving out some OW's, that would free up some room for tomato transplants. Our weather is a bit better than your forecast. It's the nighttime temps that are iffy. I'll probably put some in the cold frame, maybe throw some bubble wrap underneath the pots to seperate them from the cold pavers. Now that your grow room is emptying out are you ready to turn the lights off or do you still have another round of plants in there?

later, have a great weekend

Greg

I don't know how you guys do it, those plants look so damn healthy! Congrats on a great start to the season, hope to see some bountiful harvests soon.

Love the update man! Great catch on that Viper X, that is one for the seed bank. I can see the wheels already turning, isolation, isolation, isolation...

But I can't wait till my little man is helpin me in the garden. Your plants are pretty amazing. I am hoping I can get a bit more growth in the next few weeks before I plant out at the end of the month. How long are you gonna harden off your first years?

That video is great! Poor thing looked like she was carrying more than her fair share of the load slacker! Enjoy the little ones while they still have that new kid smell...it wears off quick. Mine are sorting through college brochures and trying to figure out how to fly the coop.

Thanks Chris! I'm gonna get in touch with Patrick and see how he made those isolation cages last year.. I figure why not right? Btw.. Don't know if my 2nd message went through to ya but I also have a Purple Mystery Superhot W/tail from you, the other 3 are green once again lol.. Would the Purple Bhut be the cross with that plant as well? Thanks for stoppin by!

Greg

Hey Greg! Thanks for the compliments my friend. I cut the work load back a bit by rotating the flats once every 24 hours instead of every 12. The plants don't seem to mind, besides they're still getting pretty good indirect natural light when theyre out of the closet. Ha, your like me, The only time I can see a difference with my plants is when I go back a few weeks with the camera otherwise it's the same view, different day. Thanks for the video compliment :) she just started doing that about a week ago and I was thinkin.. I gotta put this on THP! haha. She loves to help her dad out. I think were finally over the whole pulling the plants out of the soil like a carrot phase so that's good lol. Next week looks like we'll finally see a spring-turnaround so I'll be bringing out half of the 1st years (all the big guys) The other half will hang out in the grow closet for another few weeks until they're hittin the foot tall range like the others. I know the growth rates gonna slow quite a bit for a few weeks with the weather so I don't wanna bring them out until I absolutely have to, even though I really wanna just bring em all out and call it a day lol. Ha, I did think about starting another round of seeds.. Talked myself out of it though.. I'd like to see a decent looking electrical bill for the first time in 6 months lol. Enjoy your weekend Greg! Good to hear from ya.

I don't know how you guys do it, those plants look so damn healthy! Congrats on a great start to the season, hope to see some bountiful harvests soon.

Thank you! I should start harvesting in late July if all goes according to plan.. Can't wait! Thanks for stoppin by.

Hey Matt! Thank you! I did get lucky with that viper X. I have a feeling that's not gonna be the only crazy thing that pops up this year with 95% OP seed sources, Should be fun! Ha! you guessed it, I'll be working on so isolation ideas.. It got me thinkin, if I can find a cheap way to do it I'd like to try to Iso 1 of every variety I'm growing, or everything for that matter! Ha, I'll see what happens..

I'll be bringing the large half of the 1st years out into the GH next week. The 2nd half of them in a week or 2 when they get a bit bigger. It should take about 10-14 days to get them hardened off, then it's pot-up time once again followed by smooth sailing :) Hope all is good with you, your family, and your grow!

Another great update, Brandon. Your plants are looking healthy and great! Keep it up :)

Thank you! Glad you stopped by. Hope all is well with you and your plants as well :)

Lol! Thanks Shane! Way to come back to check out the video after work too! :) I know what you mean.. Since we had her our lives feel like they've been in fast forward lol, crazy how fast time goes by, feels like we just had her and she's almost 2! I haven't had much time to check out the glogs so I hope everything is going well for you, send some sunshine my way would ya?? You Cali kids are always hoggin it all ;)

Brandon

A lot has happened since I was here last. Glad to hear you are gearing
up for going outside; that gives me courage to get started! I figure start
potting to 1 gallons in a couple of days, and then to greenhouse. I've
been tracking temps for a few days, and the lows are in mid 40's, highs
are high 50's to 80 depending on sun breaks.

Your plants exhibit luxuriant growth, Brandon! I want you to touch mine!
Good luck getting the move under way. I hadn't thought about shade
cloth on the greenhouse this early in the year - my annuums seemed to
do okay in the dirty greenhouse : ) are chinense more sensitive to the sun?

Hey Paul! Sounds like you have a good plan with your plants, I like the gallon pot up idea, you can move them around easier for the time being anyway. Thanks for the plant compliments, Your plants look amazing last time I checked and you have this down to a science, literally! :D The only reason I have the shade cloth up is for the hardening off process. I should have the OWs ready for full exposure by friday and then it's on to the starts.. I'm working my way from evening to morning in 30 min increments.. Pretty noobie/wife friendly this way, I put the cloth up before I go to work, called her yesterday at 5pm to have her simply pull the cloth off (3second job) today I'll call at 430, and so on. Works much better then "Hey babe? Could you move all the plants outside into a sunny area for the next 2 hours please?" lol :)

As for chinense being more sensitive I dont know really.. I just know my OWs have been getting pretty good natural light in the south facing windows all year and even then, 4 hours in full sun burnt my OW Yellow Bhut pretty good so I'm not taking the process lightly. I'm in too deep to lose a bunch of plants from sun burn lol. Thanks for stopping by man! Hope all is well with you, good luck bringing your plants outside!

Weekend Update.

I was successful hardening off the OWs.. Now I feel like I can trust myself with the 250 first years :)

It was time to pot up the OWs..

My Wife drinks MAYBE 3 times a year so when she came in the house with a bottle of wine in hand I had to ask..

"Hey Hun, who's the wine for?"

"Me actually. I'm celebrating. Guess what I'm celebrating?"

And I'm thinkin oh shit.. what the heck did I forget :banghead: "uh.... whats that?"

Smiling she responds..
"I'm celebrating because all your damn plants are going outside today"

Yep.. It was time to give the kitchen back to my wife

The 1st years came outside yesterday to start the hardening off process.

Here's the gang before getting watered and put in the greenhouse.

I think you are the one with the science in your back pocket, boss
I have gotten a lot out of your grow log! You have will power to really
harden off properly. I'm so impatient to get through this phase. My
goal is to be able to take a few pods to NWChileFest, but that seems
so far away....

Your flower pics are great, and the array of plants on the lawn is just too
cool. And the OWs? Holy moley, you have really got it down Dr. Pepper!

WOW! That's a lot of plants stuffed in one green house. Umm, just one question. HOW THEHECK DO YOU WATER AND FEED THE ONES IN THE BACK?!
They look great! Keep it up!
Aaron
P.s. to your wife. Makes my wife glad that this is just a trial year for me. :)

Dr Pepper.. haha. Thanks for the kind words Paul :) As for the will power to harden off properly, it was tough lol. I'm one of the most impatient people I know so this hobby has really put that to the test for me. You'll have plenty of pods for the NWCF, if I can find the time to come I'd love to try some of the ones your growing! Either way I'll be sending you a nice goodie box come harvest time :)

I like the flower shots as well, I've never payed any attention to flower shape etc until this year and it's pretty interesting to see the differences/comparisons between species.. The NOT Black Naga and Naga Morich flowers are identical. pretty cool :)

Hope everything is going well for you dude. Thanks for stoppin by each week my friend.

P.s. to your wife. Makes my wife glad that this is just a trial year for me. :)

Thanks Aaron! I took inventory btw. I'll be PMin you a list so you can reserve a few :D I'll have them hardened off by next weekend, let me know when you want em!

Tell your wife that this was a trial year for me too.. it just uh.. got a little out of hand

What my Wife doesn't know is that I'm going to embark on the (could be) largest overwinter operation in pepper plant history this fall. :shh: lol.

Dr Pepper.. Either way I'll be sending you a nice goodie box come harvest time :) You are a gem, Brandon! I hope you can come to NWCF, I'm looking forward to meeting all the nice NW folk in person!

I like the flower shots as well, I've never payed any attention to flower shape etc until this year and it's pretty interesting to see the differences/comparisons between species.. The NOT Black Naga and Naga Morich flowers are identical. pretty cool :) I was really surprised to see the differences in the two purples. In fact, I didn't even notice it until I looked at the enlarged images! Note to self: wear glasses :D I'm psyched to see what else pops out in the next couple of weeks.
Hope everything is going well for you dude. Thanks for stoppin by each week my friend.
I wouldn't miss it!

Oh man, I can't wait to see that! Your secret is safe with us.

Hey Brandon, everything looks pretty amazing! I am definitely on the "Get a bigger Greenhouse Bandwagon!" You are definitely in need of some more space. I think that putting mine in the garage has been the saving grace for me on this one. With the new baby, if I even tried to use a room in the house, the wife would have castrated me.....
