Bodeen's 2013 Grow _-_ Love at First Sting

Not actually starting this yet. Just trying to get my thoughts together on what and how many I will be planting of everything. There is the possibility that there will be no cows here next year and the pastures will be made into corn fields. This would mean the barn lot will be free and empty. It grows some of the best grass on the farm and the barn does have a well and a pump already there. Could it be garden number 3??? Also contemplating enlarging the back garden again.

Just got caught up on the glog. Everything looks great! Really love the way the garden is laid out.

Congrats on the grow so far!!

Thank you.  So far things are going well.  I have a few peppers that don't seem to be true to me.

My purple Jalapeno looks like purple cayenne and my purple cayenne plant looks like a purple jalapeno...mix up on the tags is what I thought, but the jalapeno has the heat and taste of a cayenne to me.  Doesn't remotely look like a cayenne.  The cayenne looks like a cayenne though.

Ate my first Biker Billy in an omelet tonight and there was zero heat.  That really shocked me.  I have two plants so there will be more taste testing tomorrow.

Anxious to try some peppers that are first time in the garden here.  Chomping at the bit actually.

Hi BD,
Bonnie and I were talking about that earlier today... my Mucho Nacho and her Biker Billy looked pretty much identical. They look like unstable crosses beyond F1. Hope you had some traditional Jals to take up the slack.

Great garden of variety man and some fine pickin's too.

I have some Goliath Jalapeno and Yellow Jalapeno to pick up the slack on these.  The seeds weren't mine so I don't know if they were purchased seeds as hybrids or saved seeds.  I have had zero luck saving seeds from hybrids.  I did save the seed from my Purple Jalapeno and although it is hot, it isn't a purple jalapeno that I can tell.

Had a turkey sandwich for lunch and sliced a cajun bell on it...absolutely no heat.  Hope its because its from an early pod.  This is ridiculous.  Too much rain??

Dinner today is going to be ground turkey patty melts and I spiced it up with red savina powder from last year.  I know that has some kick!!!

Turkey patty melt seasoned with red savina pepper powder (mouth is still numb) Potatoes seasoned with cajun bell, Teriyaki marinated deer tenderloin.  Corn with a purple cayenne pepper, and grilled kohlrabi with lemon pepper.  It was a good meal.

I feel like an Old Milwaukee beer commercial...It doesn't get any better than this!!!

That's strange.  It may be like you said, early pod and lots of rain.  Enjoy tonight's dinner, I am sure that will hit the spot for ya!

If this rain keeps up, there could be a lot of pod rot going on.  I pulled one off a Biker earlier and it was no where near the ground.

Everything is looking great Bodeen, keep it up.

How long on your Lanterns until they are ripe? Mine are doing well, but the pods are only about 1/2 grown right now, yours look further along.

I'm not sure.  The pods are there, just waiting on them to turn.  Of course this is the early pods, a ton should set on in July and I should be picking them off faster than I can use them after that.  That are prolific.  That's why I went with only one plant this year.  Looking forward to popping one of these in an omelet and giving it the true taste test.

Hope the Savina produce good this year.  After today's meal I am down to about 2 ounces of powder.

Your garden looks great!

I wish I didn't have to fight this heat, but then there would be other issues....I guess all in all we have our share of challenges.

Keep up the nice grow!

Scott

Your garden looks fantastic, Jeff.  Fresh pods with the meals.  Speaking of meals, that one looked incredible.  Did I spy a ripe Chenzo in that last harvest shot?  BTW, Jimmys are ripening here.  Great tasting pepper.  Thanks for the tip!

It would be something else.  Too cold, too wet, aphids, mites, everyone has their own issues no matter where you are.  Hope your grow keeps going well for you.  You're in actual wild tepin territory aren't you?  I dried some whole pods last year and just crushed them up.  Any soup or stew dish loves those flakes.

I think I have shown the chenzo in a pic earlier.  Glad you like the Jimmy.  Eating them raw I have to chase the skin around in my mouth.  Sauteed eliminates that problem and sweetens the pepper too :)

Jeff you really got the garden dialed in. Can somebody say blackberry pie . I love this shot  :fireball:

Actually these are raspberries, blackberries will be ripe mid July.  The good news is all this rain has some of the best raspberry picking I have seen.  Just have a few small patches growing out back and they are kicking out the fruit daily.  The first and biggest patch is about done, but the rest were all behind it.

Have no fear, when the blackberries come in, I will have a blackberry pie porn to post!!!
First Goliath of the season.  Going on a turkey sandwich tomorrow.  Here is hoping for heat!!!

Nice corking on the 'peno. I picked my first giant jap yesterday too. Cut it up for some salsa. For just being a lowly jalapeno, man that one was smoking hot. One in about 4 cups of salsa and it was too hot for my wife...Had to make her a separate batch. Hope yours is just as hot.

You grow pickles?

Are those black raspberries?

Yes I do.  They're a special kind of vine.  I don't water the plants, I feed them vinegar and instead of fertilizer, I feed kosher salt :P

Yes, those are black raspberries.  Had the biggest harvest so far yesterday.  Picked two of those bowls full and still had more to pick.

First actually harvest today.  Little bit misrepresented here as I picked off all bikers to see if any are hot.  Perhaps next round would be better if these aren't hot.  Going to be some kind of rice dish for dinner tonight and the bikers will be going in!!!

The aji habanero broke a limb in the wind, so I decided to pick these two off and give em a try.
