Carolina Reaper (HP22B) Community Grow

A few members including myself are growing seeds for this variety ASAP. I and a few others here on THP thought it would be fun to have a "community glog" strictly for this variety, a fun thread about the HP22B and growing this pepper for the first time.

I think we should start a community glog like this anytime there is a new pepper with alot of attention and alot of people growing it, possible world record holder or not. It would be fun, and this should be fun! That's why we all love this hobby is it not?

Therefore, this will be a drama-free, controversy-free, fun glog for all of us growers and others to enjoy. If you grow, please chime in. If you're growing this variety, please post pictures and chime in about your observations.

Again.. This thread is ment to be fun and informative, but mostly fun :)
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.. lol. Keep it drama-free.
I, and many others would really appreciate this thread to stay that way.

Now lets get to growing!

I went with the paper towel method for this guy just like I have with all my mid-season starts. It is far from my favorite way to germinate seeds but I'm in no hurry this time of year which is why I went this route. I've had the seeds in the paper towel for about a week now on top of my HOT5 lighting closet. The seeds should be showing root tips soon, then they will be visiting some real soil :D

How's it going for everyone else?

I have eaten a few of them. Never whole pods though. The first one that I ate was a green one that I accidentally knocked off of my plant. In my opinion the green one had a lot more flavor than the ripe ones do. It was still hot as hell but not as hot as the ripe pods.

My first pods weren't as hot as I thought that they would be. My latest pods that I have picked are hotter than the sun!!

after eating a whole pod I have a new respect for pex biz ed currie dale and even ted barrus...

With respect to them eating superhots regularly or the fact they have all downed reapers?

I would like to know what actually happened with Dale.  First he was saying pepper joe was great and so was the reaper.  Then he said he burnt all his plants as he couldn't sell the pods, they were unstable and the primo was better. Then reaper pods labelled Bakers Peppers turned up from PJ/Penny. Dale then came along and sung the praises of them both as business operators.  Something has gone on that is a little fishy.

Dale thought he wasn't allowed to sell them legally (the warning on Ed's site) and sold them to Joe then Penny was supposed to put a PepperJoe sticker on it....That seems dishonest PepperJoe label on Dale's product but honestly I don't care I believe Dale has an agreement to sell them now.

I respect them because they have all eaten Reapers or hotter.

Ok, I definitely understand about eating reapers winning respect.  I am a big chilli wimp, a fatalii makes me think my brain is melting.  I can't imagine eating anything hotter.

I guess Dales flip flopping confused the situation - stable/ not stable, plants burnt/not burnt, Pepper Joe is a goody/baddy.  Wrt the situation described above I guess some things were said in anger which I understand can happen.

It is great we are seeing more good looking pods at the moment, I am crossing my fingers my reaper turns out legit.

I just want to correct a few statements....

I never once said a bad thing about the Reaper...i never once said a negative thing about Pepper Joe or his business/products, in fact ive always said what a great business hes got going there...i also never said anything negative about Ed Currie....

I just have read a few conflicting speculating statements that say "Dale said this....." Just setting the record straight! :)

Dale, you have a very good reputation in the pepper world.  I recalled you suggesting the Primo might have been a preferable as an option over reapers although can't recall the reason. Anyway I was making indicative statements based on my memory of what I have read over the last couple of months.  I apologize unreservedly for putting words in your mouth.

My advice is eat small bits or make flakes ;)

I do recall Dale or maybe someone with access to Bakers Peppers account saying that the primo was better and that you burned plants....I don't care either way it doesn't affect me. I do finally have a reaper pod that's starting to look alright but we will see. I do recommend bakers Carolina Reapers from Penny/Pepper Joe :)

Here are some photos of some young reapers from four different potted plants.  The two plants I have in the ground are substantially larger but  just started budding a few days ago. I'm anxious to see what they'll produce

They can do that before turning red, it depends how much sun hits the pod..mine have done the same...much like a Jal pod
