catchthebear 2019

Hello everyone.

It's my first time posting a grow log here, so if I do something wrong please yell at me.

I finally had time to put together a list of all the peppers I have started this year.  I also relabeled every plant with giant labels using a grease pencil.   I'm tired of running into mystery plants halfway through the season!

It's a busy time of year at work for me, but things are finally starting to slow down a hair.

Still haven't pushed my babies out of the nest yet.  Had some hail a couple days ago that scared me off putting them out.  Maybe next week. :)

I plan to put about half of them in the ground and the other half in pots.  Would like to be able to easily isolate certain varieties when they start flowering.

I've also decided that this is my last year using the double cup method.  Big pain in the ass.

Still looking for some Tovarii seeds too. Don't intend to start any more seeds this year, but hope to run across some before next season.

Hope everyone has a good season ahead.
Cheers,
Matt

Made some sauce today.  That about does it for fresh peppers for the year :)

The labels are Avery brand labels, which you can find on Amazon. They have all the templates on their website. I only have a laser printer, so that's what I use to print them.

Wax seals are easy. 50/50 mix of hot glue gun sticks and whatever color crayon you want. I melt it all down in a cheap crock pot I picked up at the thrift store. Just dip them in.

It's about a dozen different varieties of peppers, tomatoes, carrots, garlic, onions, apples, vinegar, sea salt, and sugar. Some lemon zest and ginger as well.

great labels, sauce color and the wax seal.

any pics and details on the wax seal process?

That's the only pic I have of the crock pot in action.  I basically just load it up with crayons and glue gun sticks and then wait an hour.  Mix it with that plastic knife you see there every so often until it's ready to go.  Dip the bottles in (when they're cool, otherwise the wax drips too much) and sit them back down.  If you don't like the way they look, it dries in under a minute. Just take it off and give it another try.

Sauce looks great!  New AV/logo does too.  Did you draw that?

Thanks CD! Pretty happy with it.

I commissioned a portrait some years ago from a photo I had of myself when I was working up in Alaska.   I really like how it turned out, so I've been using it for little projects here and there too.

Galapagos Island Habanero Sea Salt

Take a few fresh peppers and remove the seeds. Toss them in a food processor with some sea salt.
Lay that out on a baking sheet and slide it in the oven on your lowest setting for a few hours to dry it out.
Pop it all back in the food processor afterwards for a hot minute and that's it.

A "hot" minute, huh?

Looks great.  Hey, what are your thoughts on that Galapagos Hab overall?

Lol  :P Thanks CD! (Might have set some aside for ya!)

I liked them quite a lot. Nice and fruity. Just about in my wheelhouse heat wise.  I don't care for them a whole lot hotter than that.   Will definitely continue growing them.    Saw them originally on Nigel Carter's channel and always wanted to grow them and now I have!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXf4ThHm3BY  Miss his reviews, man...

Is that a layer of processed pods/salt
in the bottom of the food processor in
the top two pictures?
Yeah, that was me just testing things out before I dumped everything in. Hadn't made it before and was figuring out the best way to do things.  (Don't think it matters how it's done or in what order, actually.) :)
