CMPMAN1974 - 2012 Grow Log - Started 2/26/12

Well, after a long awaited time, I finally got some seeds in dirt this evening. Wow, it took a long time as some of these names of these varieties are long. :) My theme this year...Pequins/Tepins - rare ones & AFRICA. Also, I think some rare Brazilian varieties will be planted too along with some Pubescens in the next few days. I have no idea how germination will be on some of these African varieties, but it should be fun. I enjoy market varieties and odd stuff found off the beaten path.

Here's what I've got sowed to date. Wish me luck!

Chris

I'll get it on the forum later today Patrick. Depressing day. I ripped out hundreds and hundreds of pods (10+) annuum plants with larger pods. All infested by pepper maggots. Every last pod destroyed. No point in keeping them. Most likely, I will never grow any larger pod annuums again in this soil unless I find a miracle cure for this horrible pest. They ruin a few C. chinense, but leave bird types and small annuums alone more. They tell me what I can grow in my own garden. It REALLY REALLY pisses me off! All my Korean pepper plants from Bootsieb were destroyed by them. :(

Chris

Moving right along.... I'm really enjoying this strange NOT Monster Infinity yellow/orange cross. It's pretty cool looking. Reminds me of my NOT Black Naga Mean Red Cross, but yellow. lol. I also have a ripe red Monster Infinity cross pepper too from the same source. The 7 Pot Evergreens remain HUGE. Such a cool looking variety PepperLover! Trinidia is also great looking. The pods are identical to what Judy posted in 2011 on her grow log. A nice cross. She commented on the parents before. One was a Bhut - other maybe Trinidad Scorpion?? Hence the name Trindia = Trinidad and India combined. :) The other pods on the plant have more pronounced curved tails as she illustrated.

My 2012 Monster Infinities are real huge and looking awfully nasty. Not sure what color they're going to be yet, but time will tell.

After I collected a measly 3 ripe Rocoto pods, I basically pruned the plants back to nothing. I'm not sure if the pepper maggots also can lay eggs in Tomatoes, but I should probably clean those up as well.

I have noticed a lot of spider webs which I am very careful to not knock down, the have been successful and I keep hoping to actually spot a pepper maggot fly in one of them. Probably the only way to protect against Zonosemata electa is to have enough spiders and other predators attracted to the consistent population they'll stick around?

I'm glad you liked Brito's mystery peach. Did you get the super symetrical pod look on the true plants? It was pretty amazing. If memory serves me right based on plant placement in my beds, odds are your cross below has Congo Trinidad (C. chin) as one of the parents. I'm glad you like the pepper. It sounds pretty good. Let's hope future grow-outs will retain the attributes.

I took some photos to try and see the symmetry you mentioned...

I probably need to pull some off the plant where I can really look at them.

I'll save seeds from the Congo/Peach cross. This is a first for me, propagating new crosses...Should I isolate?

That sucks about the pepper maggots. All that work only to have it ruined by a tiny fly...

Hi Chris sorry to hear about your problems with pepper maggots, I wonder if they infest tomato vines also. Here's hoping you get a handle on the problem.
George

Nice pics, Chris. You have some awesome varieties going that
I've never heard of. The pepper maggot thing is  disgusting, man.
Sorry to hear about having to take out the plants. If I remember correctly,
you said you tried the nematodes on those suckers? They must be hardy
and prolific, indeed. Death to Pepper Maggots :flamethrower: :D

It came from another member here. A one-off cross in his garden I believe. It's tough to distinguish burgandy from chocolate with this one at times. I retained the label. As it ripens more on my counter, it'll be interesting to see if it changes more.

That Burgundy Morouga is beautiful, do you have any info about it?

I am very happy with my Trinidad Scorpion Morouga Blend Yellow - AISPES pods this year! The pod shape is stunning. I grew them from my own saved seed in 2011. Consistent tails and giant pods and massive plants for my region. Can't beat that. I'm a sucker for this one.

Yes, unfortunately, the nematodes were unsuccessful. Looks like it's time to move on the Plan B - just need to figure out what it is. :)

Lupita's Pequin is a very nice variety. It absolutely loads up with pods that come right off the stem. Spreads everywhere. I can see myself growing it every year. I enjoy ones like that. I got it from Beth at Peppermania. She always knows where the good pequins are.

Chris that really sucks to hear about the maggots. It is extremely frustrating. I've been really lucky when it comes to them. Mites seem to be my biggest problem.

Great to hear the AISPES TS yellows are growing well, post a pic or two when you can. I didn't grow any this year. Your Chocolate TS AISPES is looking great too. I do have a "Not a Black Naga" plant growing but no pods from it yet. Still got hope. Be nice if that Burgundy Morouga stayed that way, very cool looking pod.

I had a kid volunteer to eat a TS Butch T and he sent me the video, I'm going to post it somewhere around here. Confirmed my thinking about the hot weather giving the pods a boost in heat, almost tore this kids head off. I felt sorry for him. He was a trooper though and got it done.

The first few generations of the Bhut Jolokia Chocolate x 7pot/pod Yellow Hybrid were all a caramel colouring
this year it seems we still have the caramel colouring along with two more new varients!!!!!
the Chocolate one you have Chris and a couple of others, also an Orange varient.
Although it seems they all still have the very high heat, pimpley skins and almost consistant shapes.

Interesting Grant. I have many plants of this one in my garden so we'll see what happens. I will continue to post the variants as they ripen. I will note this Chocolate spin off is a big, big producer. The plant is loaded at every node. I love it. I'd love to get my hands on the orange strain. What others have you been told about from others? Caramel, chocolate, orange, and ???? This one will be in my garden every year no matter what. I like it that much. Great cross Grant!!

Chris

Hi Chris the pepper maggots are caused by a type of fly, they kind of reminds me of the Tiger Fly it can be taken out by hanging baited traps also the maggots and flies can be sprayed for. I have been seeing some damage here in some of my Bells, it seems that it also attacks other solanous plants.
So far it has kept its damage to my bells and some of my eggplants.
George

You are right George. I need to find the product that will stop them and not be too dangerous for edibles. I'm sorry you're seeing them too.

Just picked my first couple 7 Pot Congo SR pods today. Oh my....LARGE! It's scale time soon for them. Twisted, gnarly pods.

Chris

hey Chris, that is a great CHoc BHut X yellow 7 pod you got there. i got seeds from Dundizzle in Hawaii that were seeds out of an f4V2 i think, so my plant was a f5 here are pics i took today, unfortunalty the plant got wilt and died it was really odd( i cut it back and hope it comes back) i got 4 good pods off it, here are the pics, the flash made them look red but they are orange
