CMPMAN1974's 2011 Growing Log - Started 1/29/11

Well, I finally got motivated and dropped some seeds in my 162 count plug tray this afternoon. Filled up 100 of the spaces. It's always so hard to narrow anything down. I've got the seed tray on a heating mat calibrated to 86 degrees. Sowing so many individual varieties is always one huge chore. I kind of envy people like AJ planting 100 of the same variety.

I sowed a lot of C. chinenses, some wild bird types, and wild praetermissums and a few other wild species. There is nothing very common on this years' list. lol. :) Tons of strange super hot cross attempts from people. At least I've got a solid system now as far as spreadsheets and tracking.

I wish I had acres to grow all I want. I could really get carried away!

I'll start the Annuums and Baccatums in early March. I'm cutting way, way back on Rocotos. I struggled last year to get them to produce (well ripen) on time. I'm not a quitter by any means though. :)

I will be pretty much growing 100% in the ground this season. I don't feel like spending money on soil this year. I built three more 4' x 12' raised beds last Fall to add some growing space. I should be fine.

I'm loving the yellow 7 X choco bhut.
Beautiful color and shape, I'll be growing some of those next year so very cool to see what they might look like :D
Hows the flavor and heat?

The photos of PI 441561 don't look anything your Lemon Drop x PI 441561. I guess there could be a typo in the number. Has anyone grown the PI 441561 and taken their own photos?

I pondered what the results would be of crossing a Bishop's Hat type with a Baccatum that ripens do a different colour. I imagined that it would take many generations to select for the shape and the colour. This could be the inspiration needed to motivate a crack at producing a different coloured Hat.

Update #1: I did some digging by transposing some of the digits and found the PI 441551 in GRIN and then on PI 441551 on thechileman.org.

Update #2: I found Lemon Drop x PI 441551 on fatalii.net. The progress is interesting to see.

Harry, thank you for the clarification. I DID make a mistake with my labeling. My seed came from Fatalii.net. :) It's a cross he's been working on for years. Strangely this variety has a horrible pod drop attribute. It is interesting. I may try again next year to see if I have better luck.

One of my last new ones to show. A weird plant with only 4 pods on it. It took a long time for them to do anything. The plant was mostly purple.

Well, this one surprised the HELL out of me. I can honestly say I NEVER experienced such pain eating a small piece of a pepper. My stomach literally started aching ASAP as it went down. I got a sick feeling in my stomach. From the exterior you would not guess it's hot. A wolf in sheep's clothing for sure.

What an interior!!!!! It didn't have the look of Pimenta Tiger - AISPES I was shooting for, but it's all good with me.

Chris, you must be a pepper magician....
.just when I think your finished with anything new you pull another pepper out of a hat

JR, this was a surprise for me honestly. I didn't think they would ripen. Pretty neat. Temps are in the low 50s today so the end is very near. You can feel that 'chill' in the air here. :(

Chris

That's how my Pimenta Tiger's finished Chris. I don't think any more of them are going to ripen for me this year though. Going to have lots and lots of purple pods to dry though.

I did take a small nibble of the end and I would have compared it to a Tabasco pepper. Going to have to try a bite of a purple one now.

Yes JR, I'm referring to Talas' strain. :)

Few more pods from today. I was expecting a real wild Galapagoense when DJSKetchie mentioned last year a professor friend of his from the island sent him wild seed. He sent me some in a trade. It's definitely not the real deal, but a very interesting one I like. It produces a ton of small juicy hot peppers. If I had a long season, it would be a monster. Very hot too. I'm pretty happy with whatever it is. These are the types of chiles I personally like to eat the most in recipes.

Another favorite of mine is this Pequin from AZ. I picked it up on a business trip. lol. I took the whole damn plant with me on the plane to MI. I guess it has sentimental value, huh?

What did this taste like? What is your guess as to what it really is?

Patrick, either I"m losing it or that's no tobasco. lol. I'll be interested what you think of their heat levels.

Chris

Chris, to let you know you're not losing it Tabasco peppers kick my butt hard. Sauce is easy, ripe pod right off the plant, freaking AGONY!

I've got a ton of purple peppers on my Pimenta Tiger AISPES plants and I'm hoping they get to at least start to ripen. A buddy noshed on a little purple one and said no heat at all. Suppose I should eat one myself.

Good call Kevin. :) Unfortunately, it is SO hard to tell if ripe because the covering literally masks colors of the pod. I picked it too early. They take forever to turn color. There was a bit of red, but not as much as I wanted. I'm hoping the seeds are viable. I'll test a few. I don't think any other pods on the plant will get close to ripening before frost. I just sat and watched them remain green all season. lol. I should've grown in pots. Also, I never saw another seed source for these again. :(
