Compmodder26's 2012 Grow Log - New Video Update

So I just finalized my grow list for 2012, aka my first attempt at growing peppers. I'm starting out relatively small for my first time, although it has been tough trying to narrow them down thanks to Jamie (romy6) and his extreme generosity. But at any rate here is what I plan to grow:

Red Bhut Jolokia - 1
7 Pot Jonah - 1
Naga Morich - 2
Brain Strain - 2
TS Butch T - 2
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia - 1
Yellow Fatalii - 1

So that's a total of 10 plants and 7 varieties. I'll be starting at the first of the year.

Wish me luck!

Edit: Hehe, I just posted this and I'm already changing it up. I decided that since I'm growing 2 naga morich, they are supposed to be similar to bhuts so I dropped 1 red bhut and added 1 7 pot jonah

I did the same thing earlier in the season with my Mucho Nachos...big pod but too green and not much heat. Was bummed and thought their claim of hotter than a regular Jal were bogus, but once I got a ripe one I learned my lesson! Ate my first ripe super(infinity) today! My first super off my own plant! Getting to be that time brother! Were all in for loads of PAIN! :hell:

After a wonderful vacation, I returned home to some ripe pods!! You can imagine my excitement. I picked 4 Yellow 7 Pots, 2 7 Pot Jonahs (not completely ripe, have them in a paper bag with a banana), and 13 banana peppers.

I think I'm going to pickle the banana peppers. Not sure about the other ones yet. May just eat them fresh.

Got pods ripening on both Naga Moriches, Butch T, Yellow Fatalii, Yellow 7 Pot, and both 7 Pot Jonahs. Won't be long until I'm reaping a good harvest.

More pics to come later in the week of the rest of them.

Glad you had a good vacation and congrats on your first harvest. Those banana peppers sure would be tasty sliced up on the grill stuffed with cheese and wrapped with bacon.

Thanks Jamie. I like your idea about the banana peppers. I think I may try that on the next harvest. Still going to pickle this harvest for use on pizzas etc.

I didn't grow any banana peppers this year, but loved them last year. Nice harvest! Enjoy!

Thanks Andy. I only have one plant and it is just keeps putting out tons of pods. Very prolific and very tasty.

I ate the largest of the yellow 7 pots I picked this morning with lunch. Has a VERY mild flavor to it. It starts out mildly citrusy then finishes mildly sweet. Overall it doesn't hit you hard on flavor. There was no typical Chinense flavor to it at all.

The burn is very slow to build and maxes out at slightly below a standard 7 pot. The burn was localized in the mouth with very little throat burn. The roof of my mouth and my tongue were hit the hardest. My eyes did not tear up and my nose ran only slightly. The burn lasted as long as 7 pots typically do. It leveled off at about 5 minutes for me and started subsiding within 7 minutes. I got a mild endorphine rush from it as well.

I kept the seeds from it, but there were not that many.

Overall, it was a very good pepper and it seems like it would be very useful as it doesn't impart a ton a flavor to whatever you would use it in. So you get the superhot heat without changing the flavor of a dish.

Nice little harvest Comp! Haven't tried a yellow 7 yet but from what everyone says it sounds delicious. Always nice to go away and come back to little presents in the garden!

Thanks 3/5! It was indeed nice to come home to some ripe pods. I was hoping that would be the case and I wasn't disappointed. I would certainly recommend the yellow 7's to grow. The flavor is good but doesn't overpower.

Not a happy camper right now. I wanted to eat another Yellow 7 with dinner tonight. I cut one open and it had mold in it. Fair enough, a pod here or there can be moldy so I understand. So I cut another one open and you guessed it, mold. Cut the final one open and yep, mold. So I was so determined to get a fresh pod to eat that I thought I would do one of the not yet fully ripe Jonahs. Cut it open, mold. Cut the second one open, mold. So that is the rest of my harvest. Not a single one of them showed any blemishes on the outside. They all looked pristine. Can anybody shed some light on this situation for me? Is the rest of my crop doomed? Any way to combat it?

Last year my first hab had mold in it, but most of the rest came out just fine. Not sure what was going on with it. Sometimes I get that, without any warning from the outside. Hopefully it'll be something that just affected your first few pods from the plant.

Picked a half ripe Naga Morich this morning, cut it open, and it was rotting on the inside too. I'm getting really worried here that all of my pods are going to be like this.

Thanks for the replies Andy and Jamie. I certainly hope this is short lived. I think I may try to spray some bonide on the plants. It probably won't help the existing pods, but hopefully it may kill any spores that are present on the plant so new pods won't be affected. I've cut back my watering schedule with the thought that too much water is being taken into the pods and they are becoming too moist. That is purely theory on my part but we'll see what happens.

Dude, that sucks about the mold. I'd be way bummed. Interesting article that Romy6 posted. Good luck!

Yes, I am getting very bummed about it right now. I hate to pick all of my ripening pods to test, but I'm almost at the point of doing that just to find out how bad the situation really is.

So I went ahead and decided to pick a few pods off the plants to see if I could nail it down to problems on specific plants. I picked pods off of each plant except the Bhut Jolokia because it only has 3 pods and they are nowhere near being ready to pick. My concerns are somewhat alleviated in that it appears not every pod is affected. The pods from the oldest 7 Pot Jonah, oldest Naga Morich, Butch T, and Fatalii look okay. I picked another pod from the Yellow 7 Pot and it looked okay as well. Another pod picked from the youngest 7 Pot Jonah was moldy. I did not pick another pod from the youngest Naga Morich, but I've included a pic of the pod I picked this morning. Overall, most plants seem okay. I say okay because all pods picked had 1 or 2 seeds that were starting to turn dark brown, but I know that is not unusual. Here are some pics of the pods I picked:

Fatalii Pod (can't really tell, but it is just starting to show signs of ripening at the top of the pod):

I ate the two halves of the good Naga Morich a little after lunch then I ate the Butch T halves about 30 minutes after that. The Naga Morich was what I expected of a Naga Morich as usual. But I was surprised at the heat I got out of the Butch T. It hit me much harder than the Naga Morich. It was pretty close to the Brainstrain and Barrackpores I tried from Jamie. It hits the back of the throat very hard and spreads to the roof of the mouth and tongue. Definitely has some punch. I do get a little aftertaste from it, much like the Barrackpore. When I get a completely ripe pod I will do a video review of it (assuming it doesn't get moldy).

Really hope your mold issue works itself out man...must suck to wait for the first pods to ripen and then pull pods that aren't edible. Seems as though this is the year of the "issues" but at least its not all your pods!

Hey, Brian. Moldy inside? Yuk. Kind of like gutting a rotten fish
Sounds from others' experience like it may be short lived. I hope so!

Thanks Shane. I'm starting to breath a little sigh of relief as indeed not all pods seem affected. Still a lot more than I'd like, but things are starting look up.

Thanks Paul. Yeah, I'm hoping it is short lived as well. Glad to see you back on here and hope things are well your way.

So I picked another Naga Morich pod off the oldest plant. I was inspecting the plants and noticed this one was ripening but appeared to have a sunburn (white thin flesh near the top). So I picked it, cut it open to see if it was moldy, and to my delight it didn't seem so. The sunburn was visible from the inside, but not signs of necrosis. I did notice that a good amount of seeds were brown and some turning black as if they were dying off. This was mostly towards the bottom of the pod and the top of the pod has nice cream colored seeds. I know it's a bit late to ask this question, as I have now placed the pod pieces on some sliders from White Castle and eaten them, but would you consider the pod to be edible? I guess I'll find out in a few hours huh? ;)

Another question about the seeds and mold. I tend to let the plants wilt pretty good during the heat of the day. I know they are hydrated as I water them daily (they each get 1/5 gallon of water daily), but do you think the wilting could cause some of the seeds to be aborted in the pods? And if it gets bad enough do you think the seed death could become a good breeding ground for mold? Just a theory I have on why this mold problem seems so widespread for me.

always think positive...im sure like most guys on here.. it will be short lived.. if in any case we will have extras to send out to those having difficulty... right now im still dealing with what i believe is forasium wilt.. 6 plants so far....my biggest concern last year was grubs.. im scared because hear them japanese beetles buzzing all oever now...good luck with the rest of your crop and let us know what we could do
