Compmodder26's 2012 Grow Log - New Video Update

So I just finalized my grow list for 2012, aka my first attempt at growing peppers. I'm starting out relatively small for my first time, although it has been tough trying to narrow them down thanks to Jamie (romy6) and his extreme generosity. But at any rate here is what I plan to grow:

Red Bhut Jolokia - 1
7 Pot Jonah - 1
Naga Morich - 2
Brain Strain - 2
TS Butch T - 2
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia - 1
Yellow Fatalii - 1

So that's a total of 10 plants and 7 varieties. I'll be starting at the first of the year.

Wish me luck!

Edit: Hehe, I just posted this and I'm already changing it up. I decided that since I'm growing 2 naga morich, they are supposed to be similar to bhuts so I dropped 1 red bhut and added 1 7 pot jonah

always think positive...im sure like most guys on here.. it will be short lived.. if in any case we will have extras to send out to those having difficulty... right now im still dealing with what i believe is forasium wilt.. 6 plants so far....my biggest concern last year was grubs.. im scared because hear them japanese beetles buzzing all oever now...good luck with the rest of your crop and let us know what we could do

I certainly appreciate it DeNNiZ. Good luck on your issues as well!

Thanks for asking Brian, things are pretty good our way...

Here's some more ripening pod pics:

Butch T (This looks like it will be ready to pick tomorrow. I plan on doing a video review of this bad boy. Hopefully it is mold free):

One of only 3 pods on the Bhut Jolokia. It does look nice an gnarly though:

Sorry about the mold bro! What is the cause of it? Soil too wet??

Awesome looking pods bro!!! I really hope they dont have mold on them!!! :)

Jon, wish I knew what the cause was. That was my original guess, that the pods were too moist from too much water, but I'm starting to lean now towards the info the article from Jamie talked about. Perhaps there are mold spores on the plants and sometimes the spores are in the flower. When the flower turns into a pod the spores get inside the pod. Still not sure if that is accurate, but it's the best guess I have.

Thanks for the kind words! I certainly hope they don't have mold in them either. I picked a Naga Morich and a Butch T yesterday, both were mold free. So things are looking up.

Like I said above, I picked a Butch T off of the plant yesterday and I did a review of it. I was stupid and forgot to check the mic before I recorded it, so there is no sound to the video. But you can still see my reaction and Natalie's antics. I will do another video in a few days when another pod is ripened.

Here's what I wrote in the description of the video to let you know what the pod was like:

[background=rgb(206, 206, 206)]Since you can't hear anything, here is what the pod was like. It had a fairly strong Chinense flavor to it. About as strong as a Bhut Jolokia or a Naga Morich, but not nearly as sweet. The aftertaste wasn't too strong. Some people claim they taste like "battery acid" (whatever that tastes like), but I didn't get that from it at all. The heat was pretty strong. It wasn't as hot as the 7 Pot Brainstrain or the 7 Pot Barrackpore, but it still had plenty of heat. It was mostly concentrated on my salivary glands and tongue, but it also hit the back of my throat a little. I enjoyed it, but I believe other peppers are more worth growing in terms of flavor and heat combined.[/background]

Great pod shots Brian! Can't watch the vid from where I am, but I'll get to it. Was really hoping you'd have the mold issues behind you when I checked in this time. That really sucks...I feel your pain. I think they'll grow out of it though. I know Cal def can cause BER but I wonder if boosting the cal can prevent mold/rot inside the pods? That or maybe lowering PH a bit. Hit up Pepper-Guru, he can probably point you in the healing direction.

Thanks Shane. Actually things have been looking up. The last 5 pods (I think) that I've picked have been mold free. So hopefully my troubles are over. Not sure about a cal deficiency as I've been using Dyna Gro and it has Calcium in it as well as all other micro-nutrients. PH might be a good thing for me to check though (I haven't checked it throughout the whole grow).

Another small harvest shot.

5 Naga Moriches and 3 7 Pot Jonahs:

Hopefully they will all be mold free.

Edit: I cut them all open and 2/5 Naga Moriches were molded and 2/3 7 Pot Jonahs were molded. Sucks big time. But I have a little glimmer of hope as to localizing the problem. The molded pods came off the same plants. Both molded Naga Moriches were off the same plant as well as both 7 Pot Jonahs. So hopefully it is only an issue with those plants only and the rest will be fine. Like I said before, I'm going to spray some Bonide this weekend, so hopefully that will eradicate any existing fungus and new pods won't be affected.

Just a quick harvest update.

Top row is Naga Morich, middle row is Butch T, Yellow 7 Pot, and a not yellow Fatalii, bottom row is 7 Pot Jonah.

Gonna open up most of these pods except for the largest Jonah and the Butch T. I'll save the opening for review videos I'll be doing of them in the very near future.

I'll post the rotten count in a few.

Edit: Rotten count - 3/5 Naga Morich, 1/1 Yellow 7 Pot, 1/1 Not Yellow Fatalii, 2/5 7 Pot Jonah.

Edit 2: I sprayed the Bonide on the plants last night, so hopefully all new pods will be fine now. I'm crossing my fingers.

Beginning to wonder if I'm suffering from blossom end rot. I noticed that on all the pods I picked yesterday that were molded/rotting, the mold was located on the bottom of the pod (hard to tell the location on small pods since they were too small to really have much distance between top and bottom). I found a Naga Morich pod today that was definitely rotting on the blossom end. I've had a small amount that were doing the same earlier on that looked like that too. I didn't think much of it because the majority of the pods didn't seem to show signs of BER from the outside. But now I'm wondering if it could be a possibility (really I'm grasping at straws here). I also discounted BER before as I'm using Dyna Gro which contains calcium and it has magnesium in it as well which is supposed to help the uptake of calcium by the plant. Guess it's time to check soil PH now to rule out lockout issues because of that.

Any thoughts?

Pods don't look like BER to me. Like I said most of them look perfect. I always get a few pods that don't turn out right. :mope:

Figures. As I said, I'm grasping at straws. Some of those rotten pods weren't from the plants I originally thought to be the ones that the problem was localized to. So it's a plantwide problem. Just really disheartening when the majority of the pods I pick are bad. I should have had enough pods by now to make at least a couple of sauces out of. Instead, I'm still waiting for enough good pods. :banghead:

[sub] [/sub]Brian remenber this is only your first year growing. I won't even tell you how my first year went. Let's just say awful :tear:

I think you are doing great!

Thanks for the words of encouragement Jamie. You are right. I have exceeded my expectations on plant performance. I just wasn't even thinking of a situation like this arising. I was expecting that the plants wouldn't produce or the plants wouldn't grow. Not that they would produce in a good abundance, but that abundance would be not so great in terms of keepable pods.

Again thanks for helping me keep my head up.

Man I hope you get this nailed down...have you hit up Guru? Maybe pull them a little early??? I dunno man, once you get your ph tested hopefully you have a clear direction??? Keep us posted brotha! If you continue to have issues I got no problem sending a few pods your way so you can get some sauce together. I know its not the same when they aren't your pods though...
