Compmodder26's 2012 Grow Log - New Video Update

So I just finalized my grow list for 2012, aka my first attempt at growing peppers. I'm starting out relatively small for my first time, although it has been tough trying to narrow them down thanks to Jamie (romy6) and his extreme generosity. But at any rate here is what I plan to grow:

Red Bhut Jolokia - 1
7 Pot Jonah - 1
Naga Morich - 2
Brain Strain - 2
TS Butch T - 2
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia - 1
Yellow Fatalii - 1

So that's a total of 10 plants and 7 varieties. I'll be starting at the first of the year.

Wish me luck!

Edit: Hehe, I just posted this and I'm already changing it up. I decided that since I'm growing 2 naga morich, they are supposed to be similar to bhuts so I dropped 1 red bhut and added 1 7 pot jonah

Brian my brotha! You are making my pods look like bell peppers ;) . Your ability to eat these supers is amazing.I guess I am gonna need to grow some hotter peppers :P

Your Daughter is very cute and now I have to buy my daughter a Dora cup.

Thank you for the great reviews. :fireball:

Oh and JJ said you can not where that Ketucky blue anymore when you review my pods ;)

He said Go Gators!

compmodder26: You handled that Dorset Naga with ease. I'm very impressed!!! You certainly have a great tolerance. Looking forward to more of your reviews.

Thanks a lot suagapepper! Jamie grows some some excellent peppers. But don't be fooled, they had plenty of heat to them. I eat superhot powder on at least 2/3 meals a day, so that combined with my experience with the Yellow Brain last month, allows me to keep my tolerance relatively high. I'm a firm believer that if you eat a superhot pepper, it will boost your tolerance much quicker than slowly working your way up the scoville ladder.

Haha, like I said above, don't be fooled. Your pods pack plenty of heat. Sorry for making you have to pony up for a Dora cup :) Since you were kind enough to send me the pods, I'll honor JJ's request. However before I do so, you be sure to relay this to him: GO BIG BLUE!!

You can handle those peppers pretty good. :P It's good to know the red 7 pot has good flavor.
I will make mine into powder if I ever get pods.

Thanks roper2008! Yeah, the red 7 had the fruitiest flavor of all the pods I've tried. Very good flavor. It is a close second in flavor to the mystery peppers that Jamie grows.

Enjoyed the reviews, but you were definitely upstaged by Natalie! :P She reminds me a lot of my youngest, who will be entering 1st grade in the fall. I love how you've got your serious face on, and she is entertaining herself (and all of us), oblivious to any pain and suffering you may have been experiencing.

Thanks for sharing!

My mother and sister-in-law said the exact same thing about Natalie. She really is fun (and a handful! ;) ). She's fun to do videos with as she keeps me from boring you all to tears. Thanks for watching Bonnie!

Thank you again for the enternaining review. Natalie is a wonderful Daughter and you are so blessed to have her. She keeps me smiling thru the entire review( especially all wound up on sugar smacks). Glad you enjoyed my sweet peppers. Next time I am gonna grow some hot peppers and sent them to you to review ;)

Update time. Getting lots of pods going. I had to adjust my drip timer as my plants weren't getting enough water to combat the heat we've been having. I upped the total daily water time to 4 minutes from 2 minutes. And I am watering for 1 minute every 6 hours now. The plants are getting a total of 1/4 gallon of water a day. When I was calculating that up, it sounded like a lot to me, but the pots still feel light, like they aren't water logged. The plants aren't complaining either. One thing I need to keep an eye on though is the fertilizing. Since I have them on a fertigation unit, they are getting fertilizer with every watering, which isn't bad. But since I've doubled the watering time per day, they are getting double the fertilizer. I'm going to see how it goes for a week, and I'll double the dillution of the concentrate if needed.

Picture time.

The Morning Glory (I estimate that this is around 8 feet now. Also notice how it's starting to send out more secondary vines too):

Those pod shots are looking nice! What does your daughter think of the morning glory? It's really going now!

Those fatali's have a cool shape and texture. I've got a few of those and I'm really curious how they taste.

Natalie loves it. She checks on it everyday.

I can't wait to try a Fatalii too. Everybody says they have an awesome flavor, so I'm really looking forward to trying one soon.

Yea! My Fatalli pod does not look like that I dont think. Its cool and very interesting.

Thanks!

Had some really strong storms come through last night. They brought a lot of rain, so that's a plus since we've been VERY dry the past few weeks with sweltering heat. The bad part is they also brought 60 MPH winds. Had two pots knocked over (Yellow 7 Pot and Bhut Jolokia). Thankfully they didn't seem to incur any damage. I did lose the top of a branch on one of my Naga Morich plants. But that seems to be the worst of the damage. Sadly, the part that broke did have a baby pod on it. But I guess the loss of 1 pod isn't a big deal. The mild pepper plants in the raised bed were blown over, but they seem to be okay. I propped them back up and packed the soil back down at the base of where they were leaning. Hopefully the roots didn't suffer too much damage.

My Zucchini plants didn't fair too well yesterday. One of them appears to be dying and the other one got blown down from the wind. I'm afraid the other one will die soon as well. I examined the stem of both and looks like some type of bug may have been eating its way through the stem of the plants. The one that is dying has the most severe damage to the stem. But there is evidence on the other one as well, so it may just be a matter of time.

Looking great! Nice pod shots...and the morning glory is moving right along. Won't be long and you'll have to shift from trying to grow it to control it!

Upon further research, it looks like I have squash borers. I'm afraid I caught it too late though. These are bush type plants and there is only one stem where the leaves and the fruit come from. So they are in the main stem and both plants are wilting now. From what I've read, when the plant wilts it is usually too late. Looks like I may get 1 or 2 more zucchini out of the plant that is still alive, but that will be about it.

That sucks, sorry to hear it. I've often gotten something similar with my cucumbers as it gets later in the year. They start yellowing and wilting and they're done at that point. Nasty bugs. They poison the vine. Oh, and glad to hear Natalie loves the morning glory. They're great flowers for little kids, with new blossoms every day once they get going.

I decided to alleviate my concerns of whether or not my peppers would be hot with my fertilizing program. So I picked a green naga morich (about 3 inches long) and a green 7 pot jonah (really tiny). The Jonah was probably way too immature to have much capsaicin production. The seeds were very immature (small and still green). And as expected from that one, only a very small amount of heat. But the green Naga Morich was a different story. The seeds looked big and white and you could smell the capsaicin inside of the pod. It had the heat I expected from a Naga Morich/Bhut Jolokia/etc. type pod. And it also had that unmistakable Naga flavor to it. So that alleviates my concerns. I will let the rest ripen and we'll see how much hotter they get.
