craft beer

I am drinking that Founder's Doom as I type this.  It is amazing.  It only has a hint of the bourbon barrel in the aftertaste.  The double IPA is the star.  So good.

Joe, I really liked the Russian Imperial Stout this time. I guess the last time I tried it years ago I didn't care for it as much as I was not drinking good ales and a stout was heavy on my palate.
You should try the Heretic Evil Twin if you get a chance. It's very good and reminds me of Arrogant Bastard Ale which is considered by many as a world class beer.
years back i hated stout now i love it being my favorite genre of beer,it is true your taste changes over time, i think that your change of mind may have more to do with it than batch inconsistency, although im not ruling it out

i liked my second Imperial Russian Stout better than the first one and they where both from the same batch (2012 release), so it also may have something to do with mood as well

ah yes Heretic, so many beers so little time and i dont drink alot or for that matter everyday so it might be awhile till i get around to that one, my local Wegmans supermarket just expanded there beer department and there selection is mind boggling!!

thanks your friend Joe

Neither do I Joe. I only drink the special beers on the weekend and one each day at that. Along with two of my regulars of course which are something like Lagunitas IPA's or something along those lines.

Hi all,

I've been drinking craft beer for about a year now and I find it difficult to get used to the bitterness of really hoppy beers. There are plenty of wheat beers out there I like that have that fruity citric taste without all the hops but I'd like to work my way up to the IPAs and pale ales that I hear so many good things about. Any good starter IPAs you guys can recommend or is there no such thing as a starter IPA?

Tony, Lagunitas IPA's are pretty good and are sold at many stores. It's not a world class IPA but it is pretty good.
They are brewed up here in Northern CA in Petaluma.
If bitterness bothers you look on the bottle of the better beers and there will be an IBU rating on it which is International Bitter Units.
The higher the number the more bitter it is. This beer is 46.5 IBU's in contrast to say Hop Stoopid Ale by the same company which is 102 IBU's.

Thanks! Next time I'm at Bevmo I'll pick up a 6 pack. I actually tried Lagunitas Sucks a few weeks back and I totally get why beer lovers enjoy these types of beers but I just need to train my palate a bit more to get used to the hops.

I don't even understand how IBU's are calculated.  I'm sure there's a magic formula to calculate the IBU based on hops used but to me a 46IBU Lagunitas IPA is bitter compared to a Stone Smoked Porter at 53IBU or Rogue Oatmeal Stout at 69IBU.  Different kind of bitter I guess.

From what I understand some beers use a higher quantity of malt to balance the flavor so they're not as bitter as IPAs, even though they have a higher IBU rating.

im not an IPA fan by any means so maybe im not the best one to take advise from

But i "marginally" like Dogfishhead 90 MINUTE IPA,im not a hop-head per say either but found it to be quite good for being a higher hopped brew, that being said i had some IPA once that was very repulsive to me(IE: Eleysian Immortal IPA) not sure i spelled that right?? oh well it sucked anyway!! ;) LOL
D.F.H. 90 min seemed quite nice but it is a bit more $$$$ to shell out unless you dont mind, the 120 is even more (never had it)

this is the only one i can say i kinda liked
im sure there are some more comments coming more useful than mine LOL

thanks your friend Joe

thats actually the exact opposite of what happens

hops are used to balance the sweetness of the malt

beers without hops or some sort of bittering agent would taste like drinking sugar water

IBU's are calculated by the amount of isomerized alpha acids extracted from hops during the boil process

the higher the IBU, the more alpha acids present in the beer

the more malt used and the higher the alcohol, the more IBUs needed to counteract that sweetness

thats why you see some imperial stouts that are like 60 IBU's, while some IPA's are only 40, because mostly base malts are used in IPAs and Pale Ales, so a lower IBU is required because the beer isnt sweet malt heavy

Nice to have an expert on the forum explain it to us. Thanks Wheebz!

Wheebz, what do you think of Arrogant Bastard Ale from Stone Brewing?
I can't get enough of that beer and usually have two every weekend. I just love the complexity of it.

Depends on the hop alpha acids primarily.
Beer PH and gravity is also important.
its usually just an estimation. due to the many factors affecting the IBU and its not really worth the time and money to do a lab test for IBUs.

IBUs annoy me a little bit, because theres plenty of people who will drink a beer just based on IBUs, which means you are missing loads of great beers in between. IMHO the IBUs are the business of the brewer or beer judges and the average punter shouldnt worry about such things.

Had this last night.  Wasn't bad but I wouldn't have identified as an IPA by taste.  It's almost amber with quite a bit of malt flavor followed by what I assume is juniper bitter.  No hop smell to speak of.
