DE/str8 shavers unite!

I have just recently picked up wet shaving (within the past 2 months) and I must say it DOES give ya a better shave. As for the time, after surviving my learning curve, I find that I can get a good shave in about 10-15 minutes. It all really depends on how detailed I get. But for me it has become a sort of relaxing quiet time all to myself.

I buddy at work have been into DE shaving for the past several years and have been pestering me to give it a try for a while and I finally decided to take the plunge. I got a Merkur Classic and a good boar's hair brush. Now that I got my technique down, I'm experimenting with blades. So far I really like Feather Blades, damn they are sharp! My runner up blade is Derby. I am also enjoying playing around with different creams and aftershaves. So far my favorites are Truefit and Hill Grafton, 1805 along with Proraso Mentholated.

I never in my wildest dreams find that shaving could turn into a hobby.

i know right! most people dont. so im guessing your boar is an omega? right? wonder which one beach? ivory or SS? or perhaps its one of the pro brushes?

but anyways i'v been working up more and more curage with the str8s i can now get a shave compareable with a electric razor. im guessing it will get better once i work the courage up to do a ATG pass.

Naw, none of those brushes. I'm using this one from Truefit & Hill

Dude, all I can say about the str8 shavers is...y'all got bigger cahonies than me. Heck I was fearful enough picking up the DE razer for the first time. I can not even imagine a str8. But, I'm glad to hear that you are progressing well with it and I'm sure it's like anything else, with practice it'll become like second nature.

you said boar hair brush right? cuz the one you linked was a badger. how much you pay for it?

also finished another shave with the swank only one tinny nick on the chin.

My bad....yep it's a badger brush and I think it was around $40-$45. It is an incredible brush. Congrats on the shave. What method do you use for building a lather? Face, hand or bowl? I use a bowl only cause I find it less messy, although I do occasionally mess around with face lathering cause I just love the feel of that brush. It's like a mini massage. Also, I was wondering if you are like me? I find that my best shaves come after a day or two break. It seems like I get phenomenal shaves after a break from shaving. I don't know why, whether it is cause my skin has a chance to heal or because there is more stubble or what, but it really seems easier to get that BBS shave. Next time you're in the market for some aftershave, check out The Shave Den just go to the store section and look for the aftershave milk. It is awesome stuff and she can scent it to whatever your fav is.

nah i'v found my aftershave of choice "trumpers lime skinfood" and yea the break is always the best unless you leave it too long. then its better to get the trimmer out and save yourself the pain

and im canadian so SD isent cost efective for me rasage poulin or fendrihans is my thing of choice. but dude try out the sampe pack thats linked earlier in the thread. at like $6 shipped you cant go wrong

Bringing this thread up from the dead.
Before I came and annoyed everyone here, my previous hobby was wet shaving and spending my time on those type of forums.
I use SE and DE.
My favourite SE razors are
GEM pat 1901 circa 1911
GEM Damaskeene pat 1912 circa 1912
GEM Micromatic Clog Pruf I think circa 1936

DE razors are
Gillette NEW Improved (1920s)
Gillette NEW (1930s)
Gillette Tech (1940s)
Gillette Aristocrat (1940s)
Gillette red tip super speed 1954
Gillette slim adjustable 1960s

I have a whole heap more from other manufacturers and vintages, but that is just the razors I prefer and use frequently.

Brushes, blades and soaps, yeah a whole list I could rattle off, but more interested in if this thread has any interest.

Someone earlier mentioned they were scared of a little old 1912 GEM SE.
LOL look at this, a 1901 GEM, it's so pretty with it's intricate stamping.

But then you shove a paint scraper blade on TOP on the razor!

Seriously, one of the best razors ever made though.

Just used a simpson commodore x2 brush, cella italian shaving soap, and micromatic SE razor. Nothing gets my chin goatee area smooth like a sharp SE does.
Cella has a dr pepper type scent that I'm not a fan of, but overall with a bay rum after shave, it's all good and works well...

I could mach 3 my neck and cheeks anytime, but bringing a mach 3 near my goatee area is just going to result in a blunt (and costly) m3 blade. I got sick of buying a new cartridge every 3 shaves because of that area of my face, ie chin, that's why I got into SE and DE vintage shaving after the goatee I was growing had to go when the 90s era well and truly ended (2004 for me :) ).
Can't let my stubble grow because I'm going grey.

If he doesn't clean it, well then it's not dry shaving is it? It's just cheating using fats and oils from whatever he used the knife on last for lubrication.

Any tips on picking up sharpening stones? My daughter gave my son a str8, but nothing to sharpen it with. Been looking a bit to find a decent deal, but admittedly, not too much.

Just wondering if any of you use a straight razor to shave with?
I love knives and sharpening things and a friend of mine got into straight razors about a year ago and wants to buy a decent used one on Ebay and sharpen it up and send it to me.
He says the shave is second to none. I am interested but have never used one.

YES! it is and amazing thing to learn and do. My only piece of advice is to have the first one sharpened by a professional who specializes in straight razors. This way you always have a baseline. to go by. You can buy them here for ~$20 at most antique stores. I have roughly 15 or so now. -- don't get me started on the brushes...

I find it very rewarding to take a forgotten trinket of the past and make it like new and give it new purpose.

I love sharpening them - its a lot easier than with a normal blade but does require much finer grits (30,000 and up for some people)

there's a good forum for straights - http://straightrazorplace.com

I'll get back to you when I get a chance to get to my laptop, been restoring and using straight razors for about 6 years now and the occasional double edge razor. Wouldn't shave any other way.

Thanks Bryan, that's the same forum my friend suggested.
