So what's a STR8 shave to you? I just love my electric shaver and tough skin - never had to finish because I felt uncomfortable:lol:

I might have to try this double edge thing. I am pretty sure my dad still uses one so I might try it out.
make sure to take it slow and watch your angles. oh yea and make sure you prep before lathering.
these vids are a good resource http://www.youtube.com/user/mantic59#grid/user/2DB6D82F52BA7608

Make sure you have plenty of toilet paper handy Noah!
pick up a septic pencil instead it disinfects and also stops bleeding. it kinda stings though.

well heres a good deal who want to try the more expensive stuff but dont want to spend lots on it

if your out of the UK its like $7 shipped so realy its too good to pass up.

I've been using cartridges for years now. Decided I wanted to put the children's stuff away and get real so I broke out my old Gilette Safety Razor.

Amazing how much closer a shave you get with one of those. I could feel all the stubble left over from the cartridges.

Still had some shaving soap and a brush, face prep wasn't bad.

My technique was off, though. Held the razor at a bad angle, moved slightly sideways a few times and drew blood. Managed to cut myself three times.

Some nice moisturizer on my face after and waited for the bleeding to stop and damn if I don't feel like I've had my first good shave in over a decade.

Now I just need to find more double edged razors and a styptic pencil and I'll be good to go.

I'm working up my guts to try shaving with a straight razor, should be interesting, but for now, I feel a bit more like a man than I did this morning.

Whoever merged my post into here, ty.
This thread is full of manly win.

Oh, and I only did a with-the-grain shave this time and I'm glad I did. I need to get my technique down again before I do the three-pass thing.
My face is still twice as smooth as I could ever get it with a cartridge.

A friend of mine stopped by couple nights ago and he's into shaving the old way. Started collecting too.

I learned how to shave with a double edge, cut the #@%$&* out of myself many times. By the time I got it down the cartridges came along and I've been there ever since. I do remember how close a shave you could get with a double edge though, can't touch it with the multi blades or electric. Oh to be a manly man again.

west cost shaving has blade sample packs for decent prices. this way you can find out what works best with you. my personal fav's are feathers but YMMV

After a few shaves getting my technique a bit better, I was able to shave ATG today without too much trouble.
Still a bit of stubblywubbly on my neck, but wow my face is smooth as hell now.

Found a supplier of DE blades and found styptic powder at the local drug store. I'm set on basics. Figure I'll use them while continuing my search for someone local to buy better stuff from. I don't have anything against mail order at all, but given the chance, I like to spend my money as locally as I can.

unless you'v got a high end department store in the area the top shelf items are pretty much MO only. but you can get good products in some of the larger drug store chains. you can find "proraso" products are realy good if you can hack the smell. that and shopers sells the omega brand boar brushes if you need a decent brush that wont fall apart
on you.
and the"real shaving co" creams are exelent for the price. fragrance is severely lacking though.

but whats your setup sofar? ie blades razor brush creme/soap? and also how are you doing your prep?

So far I'm using Surrey glycerin soap, a boar bristle brush, and Personna razors.
TBH, things are going ok with them and I've not been up to the local mall where all the good stuff probably is (good stores there, I'm sure one of them will carry better products).
The soap and blades I'm finding decent enough. I would, however, like to get a good badger brush.

Today was a bit of a milestone for me, first triple pass shave with only a few small nicks that I took care of with a splash of cold water. No styptic powder needed. I'm getting the hang of using the correct amount of pressure finally.

as far as face prep:
get out of the shower, leave face wet. start the hot water going in the sink. Once it's hot, fill up my mug with the soap in it, splash my face with hot water for like 15 seconds. empty out the mug, make my lather, and apply.

Saw on mantic59's youtube channel that badger brushes make a better lather.

that's how I'm trying to prep

This is intense....I have to shave every day and I use MACH 5 cartridges and still make hamburger out of my face every single time. against the grain is the only way to make my face smooth enough to still be presentable at 1700....I do remember my pops used a little brush of some sort with a little cup that had a soap of some sort in it and some god-awful contraption of a shaving device that looked like Edward Scissor Hands's amputated arm...Have no idea what it was but it was damn sharp. maybe this is the DE thing you guys are referring to?

I use a Grundig longhair cutter to cut both beard and scalp down to 4 mm every few weeks. Could be a bit more frequent if you ask my wife.

I have just recently picked up wet shaving (within the past 2 months) and I must say it DOES give ya a better shave. As for the time, after surviving my learning curve, I find that I can get a good shave in about 10-15 minutes. It all really depends on how detailed I get. But for me it has become a sort of relaxing quiet time all to myself.

I buddy at work have been into DE shaving for the past several years and have been pestering me to give it a try for a while and I finally decided to take the plunge. I got a Merkur Classic and a good boar's hair brush. Now that I got my technique down, I'm experimenting with blades. So far I really like Feather Blades, damn they are sharp! My runner up blade is Derby. I am also enjoying playing around with different creams and aftershaves. So far my favorites are Truefit and Hill Grafton, 1805 along with Proraso Mentholated.

I never in my wildest dreams find that shaving could turn into a hobby.
